Franchise Tag Day, and the Deep FA WR Pool is Drying Up . . .

Today is the last day of the franchise-tagging window. Meaning some more FA WRs come off the books. Guys like Dwayne Bowe and Wes Welker look to get tagged, and Stevie (look at me, I’m a moron) Johnson just signed a contract extension with the Bills. DS Jackson was franchised, but I think Philly is looking to trade him now. Braylon Edwards didn’t pan out, Morgan and Ginn got hurt (at different times), Kyle Williams was unimpressive, and Crabs seemed to be coming along nicely til he vanished in the playoffs, so the WR corps(e) look to be improved upon in the draft as well as free agency. And, there’s no guarantee that Ginn or Morgan come back, leaving the Niners with Crabs as their lone WR.

At this point I don’t think they go after any of these big-ticket WRs. Baalke’s strategy of getting bang for the buck rather than breaking the bank served him fantastically well last year, and he likely looks to do the same this year. So, as much as I’d like to see him go after Mike Wallace, VJJ, or even Pierre Garcon, what they will probably do is re-sign Joshua Morgan, sign someone like Eddie Royal out of Denver, a good slot guy and kick returner and/or Donnie Avery, a fast guy who’s been hurt for a bit. Even still, there are guys like Robert Meacham, Laurent Robinson, and Mario Manningham available. They might be too pricey, or they might not. I’m sure the powers that be are looking at all these guys. Shit Brandon Lloyd is out there. And most of the guys he pissed off in his last stint here are gone. Not likely though.

So, they do have options still, but the once very deep free agent WR list is quickly getting shorter, and will be more so by the end of the day.

Apropos of nothing, WordPress puts in little quotes in the posting area, and one of my favorites came up:

“I am a drinker with writing problems.”

    -Brendan Behan

You left off that fact that Indy has till March 8 to give Manning his money!! There are still people who think the Niners should get Manning. Article in the Bleacher Report. Every comment on that article trashed the author for even suggesting such a thing. But if Indy does not give Manniing the money, you watch, there will be a huge increase in fans who would say go get Peyton!! Where is Dennis??

The Chiefs just tagged Dwayne Bowe. 15 minuts left . . .

Yeah, it’s a non-starter, Kevin. To sign Manning would mean losing Alex Smith. It would be like taking Montana over Young back in the day, except that Montana was healthy when he left. There’s no guarantee that manning plays another down. And Smith would get signed by Seattle.

    Bad move.

Garcon is a possible tag as well.

The only new thing I see is that the Cowboys franchised OLB Anthny Spenser.

The folks at ESPN are saying what I said last night. At least 8 games or maybe even the entire season suspension for Gregg Williams.

Brendan Behan, died at the young age of 41 due to complications with Diabetes and Alcoholism. Irish poet, writer. Knew Jackie Gleason.

A biographer Ulick O’Connor, recounts that one day, at the age of eight, Brendan was returning home with his granny and a crony from a drinking session. A passer-by remarked, “Oh, my! Isn’t it terrible ma’am to see such a beautiful child deformed?” “How dare you”, said his granny. “He’s not deformed, he’s just drunk!”

Grandma had a good Irish sense of humor!!

Yeah, there a bar in Burlingame named for him. Walk in there and the brogue is so think, you’d think you were across the pond . . .

Well Chuck, I wanted Bowe or Garcon.
May not even have a shot at Garcon now that Mathis’ deal got done.
I might change my FA focus toward another position now.
Court Cortland Finnigan and Brandon Carr perhaps?
Put a little pressure on Carlos if it’s needed?

I wouldn’t see Baalke throwing a huge Contract at VJax. I’ve also got my reservations about the cost of Mike Wallace. For the immediate future, I’d sit tight and see what unfolds.
As Baalke did a year ago, waiting for the dust to settle isn’t a bad strategy because it will cause ripples on Rosters around the League.
Teams like TB with a boatload of Cap surplus likely get the first wave of action from Agents shopping clients.
Carl Nicks should be licking his chops too. TB resigned one of Schiano’s boys from Rutgers, (Zuttah) and,
I gather he could move to C.

Yeah, would love Garcon. He MIGHT be on the edge of their price range. Shit, I’d take Royal over Ginn any day of the week.

Great game between Gonzaga and St.Mary’s. My daughter (she goes to St. Mary’s) is in Vegas watching it.

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Wow, St. Mary’s totally fucked that up.

Wow. Tough game, but the Gaels pulled it out. . .
