Goldson Ditches His Agent – We’re Halfway Through the Franchising Period . . .

. . . and nothing out of 4949 Centennial Blvd. I’m curious as to what end the ditching of notorious weenie agent Drew (the Screw) Rosenhaus serves in the immediate future. Goldson is angling for a new big fat contract. Is Goldson really looking for a deal here? Or is he really paving the way for his departure? He did have a much better year in 2011 than at any other time during his career, but that can be attributed to the improvement of the defensive backfield in general. Rogers did much better than Clements, and Whitner did worlds better than Mays or M Lewis before him. Goldson is looking for a deal similar to Antrelle Rolle. As in 5 years, $37 million. Frankly, I don’t think the Niners go this route. They will either franchise him, or let him sign elsewhere for big money. Culliver can slide over to FS and Brock can replace him as CB. The great strides that the DBs made are drectly attributable to the vast impriovement they got from Rogers and Whitner. Which allowed Dashon to have his big year. If they are going to throw a bunch on money at someone, is it better served going to Brooks? Or will the Niners move Aldon Smith in as a 4 down guy? They’ve said as much, but I don’t completely buy that yet. Moving Haralson into Brooks’ role would not be very smart in my book, but what do I know? Goldson is still too reckless out there. Too inconsistent as well.

Still and all, I am unsure what they do (if anything) with the franchise tag. Will they dare use it on Carlos Rogers? He’d cost more than Goldson, but Rogers is on the edge of 31 and could be replaced by a guy like Brandon Carr from KC. Nothing to do now but wait and speculate . . .

“If they are going to throw a bunch of money at someone, is it better served going to Brooks?”

Yes, prolly. As you say Goldson will be expensive and they have others who can fill in. Why spend a bunch on him for long term deal when you have younger talent on the team. Brock, Culliver are now seasoned players and will be expected to step up. ‘The big second year jump’. They got Goldson for $2 million last year after he blew off $20 million +. Last year proved that’s his value to the 49ers. Why pay more now? It’s the same story, nothings changed except we have the backups ready now to start.

That’s my guess. Brooks had a good year, his best. Thinking Fangio will go with Brooks over Goldson any day. Donatel, presuming he had input into getting Whitner and Rogers, has shown he can get/coach up DBs.

    Goldson’s, he’s gone….channeling Eddie D.

For good, bad, or indifferent, someone out there agrees with me. I think the same as well. Keep Brooks over Goldson. They are going to sign Alex to a 3 year ~$24 mill deal, and they have Rogers, Brooks, and Goldson as their other big ticket guys. Rachal and Norriss will go, Ginn is someone whose role will be reduced to PR/KR, or eliminated. Grant is intriguing as to what he’ll want. The rest should be fairly easy signs. Costanzo is fairly invaluable as a STer. CJ as well, but they took care of him. Borck is coming into his own, but still shouldn’t bee too hard to sign.

Another point of view from Grant Cohn (son of LOL) at Inside the 49ers:

“I’d be surprised if Baalke offered him much more than what he offered and Goldson turned down last offseason – 5 years, $25 million. If Goldson rejects that again, he’ll probably get the franchise tag, as he should.”

    About Ahmad Brooks Cohn said:

“He’s a better 3-4 outside linebacker than Goldson is a free safety, but the Niners can more easily replace Brooks.”

Rally? I’m not sure about that. He says Aldon or Harralson could do the job. I don’t see Harralson setting the edge OR covering very well. Is Aldon stout enough to be a 3 down lineman?

    Dunno…

  4. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Yeah I just don’t see Baalke paying top dollar for anyone. Like last year. Besides this coaching staff has proven they can find the diamonds in the rough (Miller, Culliver, A Smith, Colin Jones) and coach ’em up to be NFL caliber players. Again this is something we just haven’t seen around here in forever. Every year is a test and this year is no different.

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I’m not nearly as sold as they are on Haralson’s abilities. He’s more of a space filler between Aldon’s plays.

I also like Aldon coming in fresh, and only playing 60%-65% of the snaps.

  6. Any minute now we’re going to break out in “Kumbaya” Chuck. Agree on the Haralson eval = backup material. Keep Brooks!

Surely there’s got to be a way of reserving Aldon S as our pass rushing specialist. 14.5 sacks weren’t too shabby! for a rookie or for anyone else. Why tamper with success?

Screw the NFL FA bullshit. This Daytona 500 is sumthin else. I’ve never seen a fire like that before on the track. The 42 crashed into the jet dryer truck. Ka-BOOM! This incident ranks up there with the time Richard Pryor set himself on fire.

My pick, Matt Kenseth (#17) is still in the running. I love me some carnage.

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Junior’s gonna win. Some time around midnight EST . . .

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Junior? Figures you’d pick a driver who hasn’t won a race since 2008.

Next you’ll be picking Alex Smith to lead the league in TDs. If by TD you mean “tedious dump-offs,” I concur.

But I’ll say this, his #11 (Denny Hamlin) is looking stout this night. But there’s still 40 laps to go. Plenty of time for #11 to take a sack, get tipped at the line, or roll right and go OB.

Fucking Montoya #42 is giving Ronnie Lott and all others who wore that number proud a bad name. Crash into the speedy-dry truck? Here’s your sign…

  9. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Both Sanu and Wright ran some incredibly slow 40 times at the combine. I think it’s a mortal lock that despite his slow time, Wright will be gone at 30. But Sanu is also a mortal lock to be there at 30.

As with “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas,” I wouldn’t touch Sanu with a 39 and a 1/2 foot pole.”

  10. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Really sounds like Mario Manningham will no longer be a NY Giant. I like Mario. I know he was the third wheel behind Cruz and Nicks, but Mario has been clutch. But early indications are he’s headed to the Windy City. Fuck their deep dish pizza. Come try some of our Dungeness crab, sourdough bread and Rice-A-Roni.

I’ve made many a meal off that trifecta. Feeling lucky and wanna try to hit the superfecta? Add some clam chowder from Spenger’s. I know that’s Berkeley and not SF, but it’s the goddamn superfecta. You gotta go looking around for some long shots outside the box.

  11. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

25 laps to go in the 500. Your leader? #17, Matt Kenseth. Shhh. Don’t tell anyone.

  12. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Spenger’s still good? I know they changed owners a while ago. I haven’t been there in about 15 years.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Best way I can describe the “new” Spenger’s is different, commercialized and formatted. The food? It’s still very good. The fish is fresh off the boat on a daily basis. But it just doesn’t have the same old Spenger’s family taste.

My grandmother (Gram) and I would frequent the fish market on Friday’s on a damn near weekly basis. Being the “good” Catholics that we were, it was fish on Friday’s. Gram introduced me to the other chowder. I always thought chowder only came in white. Little did I know about the red, “Manhattan” clam chowder. Spenger’s New England (Boston) clam chowder was very good. But their red Manhattan chowder was 10X better. Sometimes Gram and I would just order a shitload of soup and bread to go. Their oyster bar was beyond reproach. Entrees? Give me an “S” — salmon, swordfish, sole and shrimp scampi.

Those were the good old days…

Waaaah! I miss California seafood! Stop with the food talk already…..waaah

Turned on the race to see who won, and there’s been another multi-car pileup . . .

Junior’s in position, as long as he doesn’t run out of gas . . .

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    Sanu’s a no-go. I’d take Fleener in a second over Sanu.

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Damn. Better restart, Junior gets 2nd off the jump, and wins. Oh well. . .

  16. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

    Yer guy won Chuck?

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    Nope. Dennis’ did, though.

  18. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Stephon Gilmore, the DB from So. Carolina just ran a 4.44. That was the guy I was watching. The Gamecocks have been throwing out some very good defensive players of late. Funny coming from a Steve Spurrier coached team. But his D has been better than his O ever since he left Florida.

  19. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Jason LaCanfora reports the Niners and A. Brooks are close to a deal worth 5 yrs/$35M.

Good deal. That just ate into Alex’s contract.

    • phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

SWeet. Could you see Harralson in there instead?

Yeah who’s it gonna be Rogers or Goldson? Rogers I think if Goldson blows off $25 mil again.

“..ate into Alex’s contract” Rally? It just ate into Goldson’s dream of big payday in SF.

      “Goldson? He’s gone”

  20. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

It’s down to Goldson and Rogers as to who gets tagged.

  21. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Brooks gets 6 years, $44.5M, no word on the bonus. Yikes, that’s a lot of dough…
