Game Day – The Big Early Test

This game will be a very good indicator of the talent of this team. In the preseason, the Niners were easily handled by the likes of NO and Hou. This is the real thing, though, and whether taht makes a difference remains to be seen. All we have heard about so far is what the Niners have supposedly kept under wraps, not what they accomplished last week. The O was vanilla. And even blander in the red zone. The D was straight up for the most part, and didn’t do much blitzing or trying to fool anyone. In other words, this was a Singletary game. However, it was a game that Sing usually lost. So, that alone is a plus for Harbaugh.

Truth be told though, hearing what these guys will do in an upcoming  game is also a Singletary thing that I couldn’t stand. Show it. Don’t talk about it. Hearing how well practice went, or how well Smith hit deep balls on the practice field usually makes me throw up in my mouth. Show it, and shut up about it. Harbaugh, to his credit, doesn’t talk much about anything regarding practice, injuries, or anything that could even mildly be construed as something the opponents can use against them, or the writers can write about.

So, another excersize in vanilla ice cream, or will Harbaugh unleash a bit of a down field passing attack? It would be nice to see the run game go as well, but you, me, and the watercooler all know Dallas will come out and crowd the line to force Smith to beat their D with some mid-range passes. Bubble screens, smoke routes, and runs up the middle won’t work until the Niners hit a few passes longer than 5 yards. Pass blocking is essential. Somethng that was a problem in the preseason. DeMarcus WHERE? is the key for the O line. Slow him down, and let Smith hit some passes, and the line should be able to get the run game going.

Beating Dallas, a good but flawed team, would be a big feather in Harbaugh’s cap. It would give the Niners confidence, and the fans a little hope, and hopefully swing the momentum for this team going forward.

Great penetration by MacDonald… next time make the damned tackle though.

  2. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Giving Kitna too much time to throw. He’s a journeyman, but if you give him all day he’s going to hurt you.

  3. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

Romo is out, what a wuss.

    Wassup?

  4. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Kitna gave us a gift there.

Alex needs to get a good drive going, get some momentum back now.

  5. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

    Kitna=fail

  6. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Don’t like the first down call there.

  7. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Bad pass by Alex – rushed it and didn’t see the DB.

  8. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

    Damnit Smith,

  9. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Big third down here. Got to hold them to a FG at worst if we can.

  10. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

So maybe the 3rd Q just isn’t his thing, lol

  11. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Romo is out? That kills BOTH my fantasy teams. Like I’ve been saying all along, God hates me. Well, you know what? I hate him back twice as much back. Fuck him and his first born child, Jesus H. Christ.

    Jesus H. Christ.

  12. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Wow, Alex with a horrible pass. Let’s hope he can recover from that horeshit play.

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

That’s what you get for taking Romo, Dennis. Traitor. Eat shit and die motherfucker.

Alex needs to get his shit together in a fucking hurry.

    Or we need to run.

  14. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

Time to suck it up and start pounding that Cowgirl line..

  15. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

You can’t sit on a lead and get too conservative this early. I don’t like harbaugh’s play calling in the second half so far.

Alex has good field position after the return, got to do something with it now.

  16. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Nice INT by YOUR guys QB, Alex, that led to the tying TD by Jon Kitna.

If we lose to the Jon Kitna, I won’t allow Rob to sell another tree in Florida…

    Bonsai!

  17. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Big series for Alex here – he HAS to get the game back in his control. With Romo out, this is winnable if he executes.

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Smith is waiting too long there.

  19. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Three and out – wasted field position and did not get it done.

  20. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

The announcer just called it, no explosive plays, no passes down the field!! Throw the Fing ball down the field!!!

  21. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

This is on the play calling!!

  22. robd's avatar robd says:

we can still win this guys

  23. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Still waiting for Alex to have that complete game – he looks good for a couple of quarters, and then, it’s back to not-so-SuperAlex.

  24. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Okay, nice pick by Brock, NOW we need to get some points. Alex HAS to get it done NOW, no excuses.

  25. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

    And there you go… TD.

  26. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Spencer blew that coverage… he needed to get a solid chuck on Walker before he got out of the backfield.

Here comes Romo… his option, but you have to go for his ribs here.

  27. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Oh here you all are. Ok Del here comes your boy Romo to try to save the Cows

  28. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

Romo is back, busted ribs and all. Smack that fucker..

  29. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

That was a good job by Alex to read the coverage to Walker there . . .

    Redemption for the D AND Alex . . .

  30. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

The touch down throw, down the field not some stupid drop off pass

  31. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

    Nice series by the Defense.

  32. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

I hope JH does not go conservative here. Grab them by the throat and don’t let up.

  33. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    One solid drive and it’s ballgame. . . .

  34. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Tony Romo = Aaron Rowand. He’s another “Gamer.” Plays like him, too…:P

  35. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

    Gotta love Harbaugh

  36. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Nice run by Alex but he is short.

  37. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

Hope Harbaugh does not go conservative and just call running plays

  38. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

I’d take the points here, too. Ten points sounds pretty good now. Make Crippled Romo or Kitna score twice.

  39. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Bit of a strange call, but the old adage is never take points off the board. Plus the D is killing Romo. Kitna was doing a better job.

  40. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Got to love AQkers so far. money from 55 . . .

  41. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Akers our all-world kicker. On track for my predicted 27-21 win

  42. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

Good move keeping the points. Time for the Niners to turn the hounds loose

  43. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    Hey Phil! Welcome aboard.

    D gets a score here.

  44. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

    PASS RUSH!!!

  45. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

Too much time though to go to the run only!! Pass the ball down the field!!!

  46. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Got to keep inflicting pain on Romo – don’t let him stand and throw.

  47. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

That 55 yd FG made by David “Green Acres”, was the longest ever recorded at the ‘Stick.
And who told you that was, and should be out best FA pick up?

  48. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Hey Chuck, damn nail biting time! We got a horse race

  49. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

    Austin is killing them

  50. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Sorry, but that was some serious fantasy pts right there…

  51. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

This is why Harbaugh had better not go to just the run!!

  52. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

This is why Harbaugh had better not call plays not to lose the game, call plays to win the game

  53. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Shit. Bad job by the D there.

  54. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Here we go. Can the Niners keep the ball out of Dallas’ hands?

  55. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Time for Alex to step up.

  56. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Did you guys hear the cheer after that last TD was confirmed? There’s a reason why the camera’s haven’t panned down into the stands…they’re littered with Cowboys’ fans.

  57. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

84 on a slant right there

Okay, we’re turning into the Sardine Can Offense of jimmy Raye right before our eyes.

  62. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

So again the offense doesn’t get it done. It’s up to the tired D again.

  63. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

Andy Lee may be their best defensive player

  67. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

They’re going to score at this rate and leave no time for us.

  68. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Somebody on defense needs to make a big play to win this game.

  69. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

    Great play by Justin Smith…

  70. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

47 yarder to tie ? BLOCK THAT SHIT

  71. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Be a nice time for McDonald to block one.

  72. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

    Shit. OT.

We should have won this game. Now it’s sudden death, because of too many conservative play calls, a few blown coverages, a couple of O-line foul-ups and a couple of Alex mistakes, the pick being the big one.

  73. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

    That tails shit never works

  74. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Goddamnit, Alex, Harbaugh, make some plays and win this shit.

  75. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

    Goddamnit. Threw it short.

  76. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Ginn needs to know where the first down marker is, and so does Alex.

  77. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

Goc DAMNIT, WTF kind of defense is that

  78. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

    Too many fucking stupid mistakes.

  79. NoFear49er's avatar NoFear49er says:

Whitner bit on the run. Should have stayed home in that down and distance.

  80. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Harbaugh’s play calling was the biggest reason we lost – helped in no small measure by Alex’s miscue, and lapses in pass protection.

  81. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    Fuck. Defense wasn’t up to snuff in the 4th . . .

    This sucks.

  82. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

fox needs to get the camera off that loser praying on the sidelines. sheesh

  83. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

    later..

  84. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Whitner is a guy who looks for the big hit. He is vulnerable to being suckered like that. But in that situation… NF is right, gotta stay home. Stupid play.

  85. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Harbaugh either learns to stop this “play not to lose” shit, or he’ll be back in collge ball in two years.

  86. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

God, I hate games like this. The pass pro failed in the end. Couldn’t run in the end. Harbaugh got too cute in the end. Play action for an 8 yard sack after the 7 yard run. Where’s the blocking? Howe doe DeMarcus come unblocked in ANY situation? One fucking slant that went for 15 yards. Smith with his brain fart. But the biggest fail was the defense. They let Romo out of too many 3rd and long plays. Two scoring drives with the 10 pint lead.

Big fail. Folks will now second guess the decision to take the points on the 55 yard FG.

They left it up to the defense, and they didn’t do the job.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

They never were able to run, Chuck. Not just at the end. This was a tough, well played game.I don’t know that I ‘d try so hard to find fault.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Tip your cap if you must. I hate the fucking shit. I was hoping the D would play that stretch a little better. The Niners were overpowered in the end by Dallas’ line.

When you get beat by the very guys you know they are going to, it makes it all the more bad. Even with the pressure, 427 yards in the air is flat terrible. 3 guys with 100 recieveing yards? Blehhh.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

I like their attitude. We’ll see as the season wears on but I see them as much better than last year. But they need to get Gore going or get a change of pace there.

  87. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

Well, they have to protect their QB and they have to get to the other QB.

  88. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

It goes without saying. As much as I hate to say it, Tony Romo is a winner, Alex Smith is not.. That fucker came back with bruised/broken ribs and beat our ass with the 2:00 drive to tie the score. Seriously, if any of you would take Alex Smith over Tony Romo? You need to see the shrink twice as much as I do.

Yards passing: 427 vs 132. I don’t need to tell ya which goes where…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

Romo played great, but 420 + yards is on the defense. Smith also played well, 99 QB rating. Diff was pass rush. Now go the Dallas blog, trolliot…

  89. barleyfreak's avatar barleyfreak says:

    Fuck God Damn.

  90. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I knew the yardage was lopsided, but 472 to 206?

The D wasn’t very good today. Again, they left themselves vulnerable to big plays. The D line did pretty well for the most part, but the DBs got toasted with regularity. Witten got WAY too open WAY too many times. Same with Austin.

Harbaugh needs to learn the lesson of his predecessors. Play it safe, and you get burned in the end.

  91. winder's avatar winder says:

God, I hate Dallas. I still don’t like so many Gore up the middle calls they were ready for em. This one really hurts.

  92. barleyfreak's avatar barleyfreak says:

I’m not gonna rail on AS for throwing a pick. It’s what you do AFTER that makes or break a QB. After is winning. Our OL played good in the first half, and our play calling/execution in the 2nd sucked big time. I want to be good, but truth is we’re not. We’re mediocre. Truth hurts. I think we’re better than last year — but much of that is a coaching upgrade and strangely enough — the coaching has much to learn.

400 yards. Sheesh. Our pass did NOT set up the run. I can only surmise that either the OL, and the play calls, are seroiusly sucking on the run plays, or are “pass” is still just not scaring anyone. By hook or crook, until it does, I see more of same.

  93. barleyfreak's avatar barleyfreak says:

*our* — I’m so pissed I can’t even use the English language.

  94. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

I don’t see much to be pissed about. The team played tough but came up short against a good team. They’re not crushed- they know they can play.

  95. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

It’s the latter, Barley. The niners need to show more downfield passing, IMO. Until that happens, the run game goes nowhere. VD has been very quiet so far. Williams needs to be used more on deep routes. What sucks is the game was there for the taking. The D didn’t hold Dallas at all in the 2nd half. The offense didn’t get much going until the pick/TD to Walker. The blocking failed in the end. The Niners got worn down on bith sides of the ball.

Chalk it up to the Niners not being all that good, I guess. The coaching needs to learn on the fly as much as the players do. The play at the end of the 1st half was a KILLER. There is NO WAY a guy should get that clear and be able to score with the time left in the 1st half. The play in OT as well. Those 2 plays were colossal failures on the defense’s part.

  96. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

    Link to the gamebook: http://www.nfl.com/liveupdate/gamecenter/55190/SF_Gamebook.pdf

The offense did not execute. Seven drives after halftime, one TD on the long pass, two first downs. About ten minutes of possession in the second half to Dallas’s twenty.

Leave your D on the field all day, and they wear down.

You cannot go conservative with 30 minutes left and think you’re going to win. This ain’t college, and it ain’t Stanford, JH.

Good game, The Cowboys just made less mistakes at the end
