Game Day – A New Hope

In a galaxy far far away, blah blah blah. . . Well, this is head coach IV (the new hope, get it?) for the gang that can’t run the team straight. The Yorks are hoping against hope that Jim Harbaugh can get these guys on the right path. They’ve had one draft, and some fair to middling preseason resluts. Fairly impressive when you take into account the fact that there was little coaching time. This will be a learn as you go kind of season, but the easier games are early.

What does it mean for real? No clue. The hope is the offense gains some consistency, and the defense gets more aggressive. That’s all I’m looking for, in a nutshell. Nanoo nanoo . . .

    Grump,
Dallas isn’t as good as you think. But yeah, if you’re relying on Akres, Ginn and Alex Smith legs, you ain’t gonna beat the Cowboys.

  2. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

There’s been a total of 165 yds of offense from both teams in the first half.
I don’t think this will be one for Sabol and his NFL Films archive…

  3. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Seattle’s a mess up front, though. They are young and not so good.

The offense needs to show some consistency in the 2nd half. Like passes over 5 yards. . . .

  4. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

You guys are a total hoot- he’s blocking downfield, running for 1st downs, 97.7 QB rating..a game “Big Ben” woulda liked to have .

    • grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

I don’t care about QBR, I care about TDs. So far we are 1 for 4 in the red zone. Nothing to be happy about.

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Agan, the onus is on Harbaugh to get something out of Alex more than these fucking checkdowns.

  6. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

It was a very cautious offense, but if you can trash Smith on this half, you’re completely full of shit.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I’m still trashing him. So I guess I’m full of shit. You know what else is full of shit? You’re already on the record as predicting the 49ers will beat the Cowboys next week.

Alex Smith beat tony Romo? Put you’re money were you mouth is pal. Name your price.

  7. bigflavor's avatar Flavor says:

Smith has had a very good first half— I’m sure that just bums out Denny. Dude, how can you say you’re a Niner fan and yet wish failure upon their starting QB? Makes no sense at all.

  8. Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

Captain Check Down isn’t gonna change his stripes next half. Game managers: can’t live with ’em …. pass the beer nuts.

  9. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

Norv Turner’s run in Diego ends this season.

  10. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

Without checkdowns, Joe wouldn’t even be in the Western Pennsylvania HOF..shit, even the jackals at the Stick were cheering Alex

  11. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Spit, I’m not worried about Akers or Ginn next week. I’m worried about Demarcus Ware having a feeding frenzy against Joe Staley and Anthony Davis.

The offense needs to step up big time or Dallas will tear Alex’s head off.

  12. Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

Wait, hold on…… Alex Smith is awesome….. Flavor and Twinfan are here. LMAO!

  13. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Four first downs on the last drive… that was better. Three the whole half before that – that ain’t good enough. We have to move the chains. Have to convert on third down, running or passing.

On defense, though, no complaints. Very solid game up front and even so far from the retooled secondary.

  14. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

Where’s Jamie Maggio tend bar at?

  15. bigflavor's avatar Flavor says:

Hey, I’ve just been consistent about him, I’m certainly open to being wrong down the road. I maintained from the time Harbaugh was hired that he could turn Smith into something serviceable–no more, no less. They have been calling way too many run plays but he’s had plenty of opportunities to fuck something up and he hasn’t done it–that’s a different A-Smith as far as I’m concerned. And that throw down field to Davis was a pearl……..

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

See, Flav, that’s your problem. Turn smith into something “serviceable?” Is that all you ask of your QB? WTF are your standards? Teams with QBs that are serviceable not name Dilfer, don’t win Super Bowls.

  16. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Crap. Gore can’t get untracked either. too many players in the backfield too quickly.

  17. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Nice catch, Crabs. Who needs practice? You do, asshole.

  18. Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

Game management with Alex Smith …….. can’t win with a game manager in the 2011 NFL. But hey, at least there’s a plan, and soon Harbaugh and Baalke will find a great QB. Thanks Alex for your stop gap patronage.

  19. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Another good punt by the MVP.

Yeah, the throw to Davis, like the one to Braylon in the pre-season, was the kind of play Alex has not made much in his career.

The game plan today is very conservative. JH may be saving his firepower for teams he knows will be harder to beat. Still, you cannot be satisfied with today’s production.

  20. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

Hey Lynch, Gallery SUCKS. What are you smoking?

  21. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Beat the blitz there. Nice play by Baldwin on the sideline.

  22. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

Maybe my unobservant litlle numbskulls aren’t noticing that the only offense IS Smith.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

We have a total of 133 yds thus far. Again, where are your standards?

Next week, I have Romo, you have Smith. What’s the bet? You don’t have the gumption.

  23. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Best play Tavaris made all day… a fucking block.

  24. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Haralson blew containment on the end around. Can’t wait for Aldon to mature.

  25. Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

Gotta get the pick sorted out in the secondary. Oldest play in the book, and “the switch” needs to be coached up.

    • grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

That’s where four guys never having played together hurts you. By week ten, they probably handle that play. Not now.

  26. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Well, Seattle is back in the game. The offense needs to recapture the tempo here.

  27. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

And on first down, it’s the Jimmy Raye Special.

  28. Fugazi's avatar Fugazi says:

    Gore sure looks tentitive today

  29. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

So help me motherfucking Christ. Why is Moran Norris still wearing a 49er uniform?

    Fire Harbaugh!

  30. grumpyguy's avatar grumpyguy says:

Had plenty of time, and Alex floated it long. A little too much air under it. Not a good throw.
