The 2011 season is finally upon us. Long gone is the talk of lockouts, strikes, free agents, UDFAs, and holdouts. Tonight we get the last two Super Bowl champs in New Orleans and Green Bay. Frankly, this looks like a cakewalk for Green bay, as New Orleans is (in my opinion) a team on its way down from the pinnacle. They were trounced fairly easily by the lowly and ridiculed (and rightly predicted by Unca) Seattle Seahawks.
The Saints could be better than I think. They did hit the FA market pretty hard, getting Darren Sproules, the oft-mentioned Aubrayo Franklin, and another strong DT in Shaun Rogers, and they got Cam Jordan from Cal and Alabama’s Heismann winner Mark Ingram in the draft, but I still don’t think they win out over Atlanta.
Anyhow, welcome to the new blog, and onward to Sunday . . .
Who’s Aubrayo Franklin?
Another reason to like Aaron Rodgers. In an interview discussing Mark Sanchez and his GQ photo spread, he said this:
“Look at this, that’s embarrassing,” Rodgers said. “Page 94 of this GQ thing here, that’s terrible.”
That would be the photo of Sanchez in the black tank top and white pants you see here. GQ also featured Sanchez with the Joe College v-neck sweater look, bare-chested with black sweats and some kind of pseudo-Rob Johnson headgear thing going on, and hanging out in an old-school hot tub (why, we have no idea).
Rodgers, who started his road to the NFL at Butte College in Chico, Calif., tumbled down the draft board, and had to wait three years for Brett Favre(notes) to leave town, may not understand Sanchez’s USC-to-the-Jets-to-high-profile lifestyle. It’s just not the way he rolls.
“That’s not really my style,” he told the station. “I like my anonymity, I like my privacy. I like being able to be the quarterback during the week, and in the offseason be able to do what I want to do and not be in the public eye.”
Then he added:
Keep in mind that Rodgers is the same player who slams teammate Clay Matthews (who played with Sanchez at USC) in the newest “America’s Game” for the hair-flip he likes to do with his long, blond hair. He’s just not big on frills.
“I don’t like to watch him in pregame, because I think it’s absolutely ridiculous,” Rodgers said of Matthews. He loves to play to the camera, and he wants to say as much bizarre, crazy stuff as he can. I like to tease him about being Hollywood, and he tries to do the same thing to me. The difference between him and I is that I’m from Northern California and I act like it, and he’s from Southern California, and he acts like it.”
Apropos of nothing, you just don’t hear a lot about Butte College antywhere but Chico . . .
I’d like to see the Niners pickup Donnie Avery. He’s injured, but we need to improve our wide receivers. I think the kid can play…. once fully recovered.
Where did this interview come from?

A fluff piece on a fluff piece. So Aaron is a regular guy. Check..
And nary a mention of taffeta . . .
Do you really intend to feed Spitter with the gay stuff? Good start, Chuck.
If Clay was on my fantasy team, I’d cut him. So Cal stinks in every way imaginable.
Lol. I got him on both my insider leagues. He can flip his hair to kingdom come for all i care just as long as he get me some points.
Hey Dennis, I can’t get into my team to update my roster . . .
I was just there, no problems here. Are you sure you’re signed into ESPN? Your name should be displayed in the top right-hand corner. Let me know.
When I getr on to ESPN, I’m in, but when I use the link you gave me, I’m not.
The league is Insider Invitational, right?
Because I can’t find the league.

This just in: Aaron Rodgers ain’t too shabby…fuck.
It’s funny that being behind Favre is cited as key to Aaron’s sucess. Now Brett had a great arm and the guts of a burglar, but I sure don’t see him as a frigging teacher of anything. Unless he’d been thrown into this catastrophe in 2005, Rodgers was just going to be good.
Might as well give Rodgers the fucking MVP. And he’s not even thru the 1st quarter. Wait, I should be fair. Alex might do better in his first 15 mins vs Seattle.
He just might. He’s had his best and some of his worst games against Seattle.
Wow, crazy ST shit going on this game. Not much defense either. Pass pass pass pass pass.
Montana did Young no favors. Either it rubbed off or Young (and Rodgers) were good to begin with.
Dennis, I was at the Seattle game last year, and Smith played probably his best game.
Yeah, and those YAC from his receivers that Montana was praised for, Smith got shit for.
Mike, it’s not so much Rodgers was behind Favre, it was that he:
a) Wasn’t thrown into the mix as a rookie
b) Came into a team with a solid coaching staff
c) Was able to learn the nuances of GB’s offense without the pressure of starting
d) When he was annointed starter, he had a solid team around him on both sides of the ball
Favre did nothing for him, but he didn’t really have to.
I just said that Favre had little to do with it. I know why he succeeded, the main one being not being throw into Nolan’s shit hole.
SPITBLOOD
just saw ur post to me on the other thread !
i didn’t like mclown either , and am glad we dumped him for tolzien ! that kid looked good against us !
this draft by baalke had me really scared after the first couple of picks ! a lot of the players we got seemed to be either reaches or at least ones we could have gotten in a later round ! i’m much happier now after seeing them in preseason , and think this draft might be a lot better than i first thought !
i wasn’t big on locker , i thought maybe gabbert and ponder were the best two QB’s in the draft !
i also thought our guy capernicus was worth taking a chance on !
I trusted Harbaugh with the Kaep selection, still do. It’s hard to know Harbaugh’s plan with Kaep. I’m not sure I like after what I’ve seen from Kaep. I trust Harbaugh’s experience and knowledge, but what I saw in the preseason from Kaep leads me to believe Kaep’s at least two years away from being a starter. Giving Alex a one year deal and not being more aggressive in the recruiting of other free agent qbs leads me to believe Harbaugh thought he could develop Kaep quicker. I like Kaep. I think he has geniune leadership qualities. But his game is still two years away.
This just in…. the Packers are fuckin’ good. Time to start hatin’ on ’em.
SPIT
everybody said capernicus would take some time , imo harbaugh knew that might be the case ! i think it’s more likely they think they can either find a better QB next year (in the draft or free agency ) or re-sign smith if worse comes to worse !
heck , who knows , they still might end up trading for carson palmer if the QB’s we have on the roster stink it up this year !?
oh , and don’t we hate green bay enough since the 90’s or so ?
Brown will never give up the rights to Carson Palmer. He ranks right up there with Mike Singletary regarding all time NFL douche bags. I don’t see the Niners re-signing Alex Smith. You give Harbaugh and Fangio one year of Alex Smith and they’ll start seeing what we’ve all seen for years. By then, SF’s offense should be an attractive place for a free agent to play. I could see the Niners signing Josh Johnson next year and drafting another qb. You don’t want a stop gap – you want a franchise qb capable of winning Super Bowls. Josh Johnson, Tolzien and Kaep may just be future stop gaps. I’m okay with that as long as Harbaugh dumps Alex Smith. I really think this is Alex’s last year in San Francisco. If Harbaugh keeps Smith for another year, he needs to check his qb guru coaching credentials at the door.
I honestly could see the Indianapolis Colts trading their entire draft for Andrew Luck Peyton got a stadium built. Peyton alone built an entire organization. All that team needs is a qb, and Luck went to Stanford. He can work the game like Peyton, eventually, with a little time. Don’t write-off Manning, but if he’s got a back problem like Montana, enter Andrew Young, I mean Luck….
Their whole team is aging, and they need more than a QB. If anything, they’ll tank behind Ichabod Collins, and get a decent draft position.
It’s a neck problem, Spitty.
