Slow-Moving Train Wreck

I’m getting a queasy feeling about this season as we get guy hurt, unwilling to sign, playing the same old soft defense, and go through the motions. Yeah, I know, it’s preseason. But I sure didn’t like our 3rd down defense. 2nd stringers or not. The kickoff coverage was terrible and led to a TD. Although the new rules are weird to say the least. Not sure where the league went to to figure that shit out. We forced one punt. Although we did make a couple 4th down stops. Too many pre-snap penalties. All the same fucking problems from before.

Seeing those two big drops on the deep passes kinda underscored the need for BA, but Tenn used their starters against our backups early and the pass pro wasn’t terrible.

Sure, I’m reading to much into this, but it sure seems like we are getting a lot of bad news out of camp. And yeah, Ambry Thomas WAS playing himself pf the team before the broken arm.

I would like to see Purdy get into the Raider game, if only for a series or two. Just to get a taste of upcoming action. Then again, maybe not. Too much weird shit has happened to even risk putting him out there.

Shit! There’s a Game Tomorrow?

All this bullshit around BA and Trent, and injuries and cuts and signings and preseason game 1 is tomorrow. In Tennessee. I’m getting a weird feeling about this season. Nothing seems to be going well with all the shit I just mentioned.

Yeah, we got a lot of players, yeah, we are the defending NFC Champs, yeah, the Super Bowl hangover didn’t fuck with KC as they went back-to-back. But will it fuck with us?

I’m not getting a good feeling from the organization at this point. CMC not practicing or playing in preseason isn’t too worrying but I just hope that is all he’s out. Pearsall is ‘wowing them’ in camp so I’m glad his injury isn’t nagging and he’s full-go. But the contract disputes are once again a big part of camp. The good news is this is Brock Purdy’s first camp as the starter, so the hope is we won;t miss BA too much. Either now or forever.

Last thing I’ll say is, BA needs us more than we need him. As KC showed, losing one playmaker when you have others isn’t as big a detriment as you would think.

Williams? That’s a much bigger hole to fill.

Curious to see Purdy and the boys out there hitting. Maybe a nice well-played series or two will calm me down.

You Gotta Know When to Hold ’em. . .

. . . know when to fold ’em. The Niners are at least playing this the correct way. They know they have all the leverage and are holding out for actual players and not draft picks. My thought yesterday was get linemen from Pittsburgh, and that’s apparently what the Niners wanted as well. Since the Steelers don’t want to give up a WR or a lineman, well, too bad, so sad.

Other than that, same old same old. No word on Williams although I have to think that is a bigger priority, even if TW is old and injury prone. Guarantee this season and fuck the rest. I guess we’ll see.

Well, Maybe Not . . .

The 49ers front office seems to be the only thing that can stop the 49ers this year from reaching their goals. They are dicking around with BA, and now there are reports that the 49ers might move on from Trent Williams.

I find that one a little harder to believe. but BA even with all his hanging out at camp and glad-handing everyone, he seems to be adamant that he’s worth more than we are offering. Whatevs. If we can get a good haul, do it.

Trent Williams is a bigger issue. The oft-neglected offensive line would be a shit-ton worse without Williams. Yeah, Williams is old and a bit injury-prone, but without him our 22nd ranked pass pro line goes where? Up? Suuure.

There are plenty of people out there, Steve Young being the most vocal, that the Niners have already lost their best opportunity to win it all after yet another late-game collapse.

So there you have it. the 49ers stopping themselves inches from the goal line.

Well, Maybe . . .

Word from NFL insider (whatever the fuck that is) John Frascella is the deal is done with BA. No numbers yet but it will be announced soon.

Great. Cool. Get Trent signed. Get more O line help.

Speaking of the O Line . . .

So far in this early training camp, 3rd round pick Dominic Puni is getting rave reviews for his grasp of our system in picking up blitzes and executing combo blocks. He’s playing so well, there’s talk of him starting over the injured Spenser Buford.

Good news for a unit that is still waiting for the team to address the glaring absence of Trent Williams.

Trent Williams Holding Oout

There’s hold-ins and there’s hold-outs. News top me was the fact that Trent Williams all of a sudden wants a new dea because

a) OT Penei Sewell of the Lions got a four-year, $112 million extension with $85 mill in guaranteed salary,

b) Trent Williams rewrote his contract last year to give the team cap space, and it wiped out his future guaranteed money.

Other than that, AB is in camp but watching. Trent isn’t in the building. Both are “in progress” as we speak.

Hold-In | Sit-In | Laugh-In

Well, as you all know, BA showed up for training camp, but of course he isn’t participating. Yeah, we’ve gone over this 100 times, so what’s one more?

Anywhoo, still think we sign him mainly because BA has little to no leverage here. He’s under contract, and can be franchised in 2025 AND 2026, so unless BA wants to take 3 years off to get his bag, so be it.

Again, though, it is nigh retarded to go through the SAME scenario that derailed (well, slowed down) both Nick Bosa’s and Deebo Samuel’s seasons in the past couple years.

Well, it’s Official . . .

Brandon Aiyuk has officially asked to be traded. My thought is ask for the moon and let the chips fall where they may. If he wants to hold out for the year, so be it. We can then franchise him next year and he can sit out nother year.

This shit gets tiresome as it comes down to ego. I’m sure BA wants more than Amon-Ra St. Brown at $30 mill/year and $77 mill guaranteed, so there’s the sticking point. Ceedee hasn’t signed yet, so he’s I’m sure looking to that to be his next baseline.

Funny thing is, the 49ers could have avoided this by signing him 6 months ago, but in their infinite wisdom of stalling, got blown out of the water when:

  • Justin Jefferson signed a 4 year, $140 mill extension, $35 mill per year, with $110 mill guaranteed.
  • Amon-Ra St. Brown – 4 / $120 mill / $30 mill per year – $77 mill guar.
  • AJ Brown – 3 / $96 mill / $32 mill per year – $84 mill guar.
  • Jaylen Waddle – 3 / $85 mill / $28 mill per year – $76 mill guar.
  • DeVonta Smith – 3 / $75 mill / $25 mill per year – $51 mill guar.

There are a few more big deals out there, but you get the idea. BA thinks he’s between St Brown and Jefferson. From what I’ve been hearing, the Niners are around $28 mill. I’m sure BA wants $31 mill.

The Niners are still adamant that they aren’t gonna trade him. That is, until someone comes in with a big enough offer. Thing is, he’s under contract and if he doesn’t want to play this year, that choice is completely up to him. Plus we can franchise him next season, so he can sit out 2025 if he likes.

Again, I can’t begin to imagine the rigors of being a pro football player, or even being in a situation where someone is offering you enough money to buy Croatia, but at what point does a good situation become less important to a player than the extra bit of cash that they may get? I know the impetus is to get what you can while you can, but say BA goes to the Redskins. They suck, he doesn’t do very well, and he’s suddenly bitching about the team, the QB, and the front office. He wants out.

It’s only happened about 1,000 times to other prima donna WRs. Antonio Brown. Ocho Cinco, Lance Alworth, Terrell Owens . . . .

Dre Greenlaw News

Dre is gonna hit the PUP list to start the season and is expected to miss the first 6 weeks. Shame he went down in the Super Bowl as his presence could have definitely affected the outcome of the game.

Ahhhhh well. Onward and upward.
