Hmmm. Maybe Things ARE Looking Up . . .

Hey, we did get BA signed. Ricky Pearsall had a bullet magically pass through him with what appears to be very little damage. And, hey, the shoulder gets more time to heal as someone noted. A win-win? I think his playing after he’s off the pup list is pretty slim, but the fact he was released so quickly says a LOT about the nature of the injury. In that it is likely there was no lung damage or any major arteries hit. Amazing to say the least. Here’s to hoping he fully recovers. Regardless on his status with the team.

Still, the big but is Trent Williams as his big butt is not signed. To help, they re-signed tackle Brandon Parker. He was one of the cuts on cut-down day last week so he knows the system. Other than that, pray he can slow down the Jets pass rush,

Bad Penny Year? Are We Cursed Already?

In an offseason full of distractions, shit just got crazy with the shooting of 1st round pick Ricky Pearsall. He was in Union Square for an autograph signing session and a 17 year old kid attempted to rob him of his Rolex. As they struggled with the gun, multiple shots were fired, both were hit, and Pearsall was shot through the chest with what were called serious injuries. He’s in stable condition. Luckily he survived, but his football future is certainly up in the air.

Regardless of the national hooraw now coming that San Francisco is now Beirut by the Bay, this just throws another major distraction on the team that seems to be courting them by the dozen. All the talk of Super Bowl Hangover is just the diarrhea frosting on the shit cake this season is becoming. And it hasn’t even started yet.

The 49ers, as they neglected their offensive line yet again, are now being held hostage by Trent Williams, their 36 year old all-pro left tackle. Not signing him would be a major blow to an offensive line that already isn’t very good at pass protection. Jaylon Moore is the answer to the question ‘which backup sucks the least?’

One would think Robert Saleh is salivating over the possibility of facing a Niner front without Trent. We seem to be he team everyone nationally loves to hate. Purdy is regularly slammed as being a system QB, Shanahan is wearing the crown of not being able to win the big one, and now this latest debacle with Pearsall just reaffirms the perception that California, and San Francisco especially, is a lawless shit hole run by Communists. You can bet Trump is warming up the meme machine as this is all Harris’ fault.

One More Brick in the Wall

Brandon Aiyuk signs a 4 year / $120 million contract extension. That is all the details I have for now.

I suspect Trent Williams signs in a matter of hours.

Cut Down Day . . .

So far the biggest names on our team are Cameron Latu, Danny Gray, and Samuel Womack.

I’ll update this as it goes along, but as we all know, Cee Dee Lamb signed, so there’s more fodder for BA to chew. The deal with Trent Williams is baffling to say the least as I thought this would have been hammered out shortly after the last preseason game.

But here we are playing chicken with the lynchpin of our offensive line.

Pretty fucking stupid in my book.

These guys, for all their acumen in keeping the cap in order and getting guys signed, seem to really not understand that the earlier they deal with these issues the better. They could have saved a SHIT-TON of money had they addressed BA in February rather than watching the WR market blow up in their faces.

Didn’t Deebo or Bosa teach them anything? I guess not.

Released or Waived on August 26

Good News!

No, not BA or T Dub.

Shanny said Sunday that pass rusher Leonard Floyd avoided a serious knee injury in the preseason finale at Las Vegas on Friday and is day-to-day. So, 17 days off should be fine.

Meanwhile, rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall will return to practice Monday for the first time since he suffered a partially dislocated shoulder on Aug. 6. Something to be said for the week off between preseason and reg.

Win, Loss, Tie

Covered all the bases this preseason. And the offense actually looked pretty good with Purdy having Deebo and Kittle in there. Although it was the Raiders. Even still, the line was leaky in pass pro while the run blocking was solid. Sound familiar? Mason may very well pass Mitchell on the RB depth chart, but who knows? Mitchell has yet to see the field, and he’s not the most durable guy. But they will all be interchangeable as Shanny likes to play it.

Speaking of durable, we have yet to see what happened to Yetur Gross-Matos and Leonard Floyd. Two guys who are supposed to bolster our pass rush. Both left the game with knee injuries, but both were back on the sidelines looking fairly OK. Both are undergoing MRIs so the hope is they are gonna be fine with the 17 day break.

In other stupid news, we get word that the 49ers knew about Ricky Pearsall’s damaged shoulder becore drafting him. You know, the one keeping him off the field. Nothing wrong with taking late round flyers on hurt guys. NOT on 1st round guys. They did this with Javon Kinlaw. Oooops. Lesson not learned.

Other than that, the talking wonks can’t seem to figure out that Josh Dobbs is the #2 based on what we’ve seen in the actual games. Pretty sure that’s how it plays out. The defense looked much better than previous games with more starters in there. The Walmart brigade however didn’t hold up as well. Still not too thrilled with the positioning of the LBs. They are too far back to fill running lanes, and they get wiped out on screen passes.

Is It Me?

Or is even 3 preseason games 3 too many? When I was a kid, 6 was just flat crazy. But back then, players weren’t conditioning 23/7/365. They were coming off their day jobs as salesmen, deliverymen, or the occasional wrestler/sideshow geek. They played themselves into game shape, and I guess both sides knew to not really go full on.

Nowadays, 3 games feels like a worthless slog through the Walmart brigade. Yeah, we got to see Purdy chuck and duck behind a shit line for 3 series. Woo hoo. Him being out there is seriously not worth the injury prospect. It’s good to see some of the starters in action, but then again, it isn’t when guys break their arms or otherwise get hurt in these meaningless games.

The bottom line of course is money. The owners LOVE forcing season ticket holders to buy preseason games at full reg-season prices. Parking, concessions, the whole deal are full price bend-over-here-it-comes-again time.

The best way in my head to make everyone happy is to get rid of the preseason altogether a la college football, and play an 18-game schedule. This has been the aim of the owners for quite a while. And to save the players, add another bye week.

Oh yeah, the game. Well, Purdy looked bad behind the 2nd string line and nothing got going. He should have been picked on a wildly ill-advised pass, but, Josh Dobbs cemented himself in as the 2nd string QB with a solid performance hitting passes and getting loose for nice scrambles. Maybe we can trade Brandon Allen for a lineman and keep Mordecai.

hard to say where and what we are with the newfangled defense that looks exactly like the oldfangled defense. Maybe they are slow-playing it to not give anything away, which is possible, but we looked JUST like last year with the LBs too deep and them not filling the running lanes at all. And the obligatory 3rd and 12 screens that were easy 1st downs. And the usual TE plays that saw guys wide open for 20.

Still no BA. Still no TDub. One more game Friday, and they prolly sign. Let’s hope.

Will He or Won’t He (Part LXXVIII)?

Ever the optimist, John Lynch seems to think this can still be done.

“You know, I’m not going to characterize any chances or anything,” he said. “I can tell you this, it’s been a long, arduous, hard process, a hard journey. We started this early and for whatever reason haven’t been able to get it across the finish line. That’s been frustrating, but the communication still has been really good both with Brandon and his agent, and we’re trying to figure out solutions. You know I’m always hopeful. I’m an optimistic person in nature, and I’m always hopeful that we’ll get there and get there soon. I can tell you, we feel the urgency to have him, the season’s approaching, and we have ample time.

“The good news is Brandon is a really, really hard worker, he’s taking great care of himself this offseason, he’s in fantastic shape, but there’s things you have to do on a football field and getting yourself in there with our team. So we’re working hard, and hopefully there’s a resolution soon. That’s all I can share with everyone, I understand the angst of everyone, I understand there’s been all kinds of stories and talk, that’s what people do these days. I don’t like that part of it, but we love BA as a player, I think you see it every time he goes out there representing the Niners, he’s a guy we traded up for in the first round back in the ’20 draft, I remember doing it from my guest house during the covid times, and we’re fortunate to have added him to our squad, and we’d really like to keep him around. So we’ll see how it goes.”

He’s in camp and was chatting with everyone today so I don’t get what the hold-up is but we will see.

I’m more worried about Williams but I’m SURE he signs once the preseason games are over.

Slow-Moving Train Wreck

I’m getting a queasy feeling about this season as we get guy hurt, unwilling to sign, playing the same old soft defense, and go through the motions. Yeah, I know, it’s preseason. But I sure didn’t like our 3rd down defense. 2nd stringers or not. The kickoff coverage was terrible and led to a TD. Although the new rules are weird to say the least. Not sure where the league went to to figure that shit out. We forced one punt. Although we did make a couple 4th down stops. Too many pre-snap penalties. All the same fucking problems from before.

Seeing those two big drops on the deep passes kinda underscored the need for BA, but Tenn used their starters against our backups early and the pass pro wasn’t terrible.

Sure, I’m reading to much into this, but it sure seems like we are getting a lot of bad news out of camp. And yeah, Ambry Thomas WAS playing himself pf the team before the broken arm.

I would like to see Purdy get into the Raider game, if only for a series or two. Just to get a taste of upcoming action. Then again, maybe not. Too much weird shit has happened to even risk putting him out there.
