Still Waiting, Still Dreaming . . .

. . . for offensive line help. At this point I’d be thrilled if we signed a center. They look to rol with the rookie Willis at LG so I guess that fixes that? Man, I don’;t’ know.

It smacks of the Giants signing Mahler and Houser and calling their rotation fixed. Or banking on Walker saying he fixed his closer issues.

There are hopes. And there are prayers. We need to do more to the O line.

Seems the Niners figure most O line draftees aren’t very good their rookie year, regardless of round their drafted in, so they aren’t going to waste high picks on them. Which I don’t get, given that other teams regularly plug n play O line high draft picks. Or, am I wrong in that, Chuck?

Especially since they are paying Purdy $53 million/year to stay on his feet, not get clobbered by some 285 pound D end or a bull rushing 315 pound D tackle …

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

It blows my mind how little they pay attention to this O line, Snarkk.

I harp on it a lot, and I think it is justified. Puni was a 3rd rounder who paid off very well. Their ONLY other pick above the 3rd round was Banks in 2021. He was a great run blocker but iffy in pass pro and the 49ers just let him go as they didn’t want to pay his deal. Like Tomlinson and a few others.

So even when they find guys, they don’t keep them as they don’t want to spend on the line. Minus Trent Williams.

Willis could be a steal if you believe the hype coming out of camp, but beating Robert Jones is akin to beating a dead horse. I sure hope he wins, because of that very reason. The other guys they’ve drafted late have been, well, late round backups. Colby, Zakelj, Burford all belong on the bench.

But that still leaves Brendel at center. Toth could beat him, but again, Brendel’s PFF pass-blocking grade of 59.0 ranked him 31st among 40 qualified centers.

He’s a sieve in pass pro.

Susan Slusser, who I often take with a grain of salt, said some things on KNBR this morning that are revealing. She said it’s a no-brainer that if the Giants don’t climb out of it very quickly with at least a .600 clip, if not above in the next month, they trade both Arraez and Ray for prospects. It would be organizational “malpractice” not to do both, given their expiring deals.

Also, after yesterday’s latest loss, in the club house the media scrummed around Roupp to talk about it. Meanwhile, before the press could get to him about his huge error that avalanched the loss, Giants’ leader/clown Adames hurried up, dressed and bolted before the press could get to him. Lameass move for a “leader”. You make that much cash, you wear your mistakes. You don’t let your teammate take all the heat, when lot of it is attributable to you. Slusser said that doesn’t normally sit well with teammates. Duh. Adames leads MLB shortstops with 11 errors, and is in the bottom third of SS defensive stats. The Giants can’t dump this guy fast enough, IMO.

Slusser says Schmitt could be a gold glove and All Star hitter 3d baseman for some team if he could stay in that position. I hope that isn’t lost on Posey and his minions. Unfortunately, Chapman is nearly untradable with that massive contract and he’d have to OK a trade, anyway. Buster needs to make a bold move or two, and I think he will.

    • James's avatar James says:

That was the first of Buster the Bolds moves, stepping in to the negotiation that Zaidi was “fumbling” because he didn’t want to give Chapman the no-trade clause.

  3. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I’d seriously think about simply cutting Chappie. Fucking Boston did it with Pablito when he turned into a huge liability.

With Chappie out, they can move the pieces around accordingly. Schmitt in LF is a no-go. Adames is turning into a big pile of shit. We were worried about Arraez and he’s the most solid guy in the IF. Devers is slowly improving. And Eldridge is OK.

Mahler and Houser should just be cut loose as well. Walker, Bufucki, and whoever else in this cast of nobodies in the pen.

At least LOOK like you are trying to right the ship. But Chappie is a fucking rally-killing anchor who is doing nothing but sucking. He needs to go. Now.

  4. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

I would give Buster leeway to make some more bold moves, because this team / roster sucks, and will for a while until at least some of these hyped AA and high A super prospects make it to the Big Club — then we’ll see if the hype is real. Even Bill Walsh made some clunker picks and trades, so I give Posey some rope. Maybe he’ll hang himself, but doing nothing more of significance to this POS squad, prior to the trade deadline, is GM suicide…

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, I’m not on the “dump Posey” train, but the issues we have seen over this past decade are still here. Players coming up unprepared, so many wasted picks, jerking players around, and front officing on the cheap.

They really had a lot of questions regarding the OF depth and esp the pitching rotation and pen coming into the season, and they’ve all raised their ugly heads and have been flat terrible.

I don’t know how or what coke-head Greggie has to say about Buster re spending or signing/not signing guys, but to rely on a shakey Walker to lead the pen was a longshot at best. Mahler and Houser were bad and badder.

And Bader . . . well, maybe he’s coming around, but Gilbert, Walter Brennan, and Oliva are holograms of holograms. Lee is what he is, a middling guy who should be a base-stealer/disruptor kind of guy, but isn’t. Can’t they teach him how to steal?

  5. James's avatar James says:

I don’t think Buster needs to be replaced, either, despite his wrongheaded notion of what makes a team’s offense click. It’s depressingly amusing to see the emphasis on being aggressive at the plate and putting the ball in play on disastrous team wide display. Still, overall I don’t think his roster moves have been irrational. There have been more players who’ve been far shittier than it was reasonable to expect. I’m not a believer in the Buster was shackled by ownership theory based on whom he did or didn’t sign. But if the big 3 contracts don’t start producing more value soon, the willingness to dump salaries may be a lot more revealing about how committed ownership is to financial discipline.

  6. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

I am not angry at ownership so much for not spending, though there is some of that, but for spending stupidly. Buster’s moves that have fizzled are part of this calculus, and yes, they have been rational under that underlying scenario.

The main reason Giants under Posey and past GMs have done and spend a ton on this bogus line of FAs who don’t work out is that they are forced to plug somebody into a position that can’t be filled even passably by a developed farmhand. Maybe, maybe the farm system will start producing major league quality position players in a year or two. I’m not holding my breath for all the currently-hyped AA and single A “prospects”.

Even Craw, the paradigm success farmhand, was not ready for prime time when he came up. It was him or the in/famous Bocock. Craw was a good fielder but overwhelmed at the bat for the first season he was up. Luckily or smartly, Sabes decided to go with the future instead of plucking some deadass vet shortstop — like an earlier version of Ahmed — and sticking him into the roster. Now, we have the same scenario with this overpaid clown Adames replacing legendary Craw. Adames’ bat apparently disappears for the first third of every season, and his arm is more accurate throwing Gatorade than baseballs …

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Until proven otherwise, this farm system is an unmitigated disaster, with a capitol ass.

15 years has gotten the team very little in the way of quality players. Webb in 2014 and . . . . and . . . Ramos? Roupp actually looks good. Don’t know if this gt posted before, but . . .

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

When you draft well and spend wisely you can win. When you don’t do either well . . . .

A bit surprised to see the Wankees so low.

  9. James's avatar James says:

Not holding my breath, but re draft picks Schmitt and Harrison have had a couple of solid months. Eldridge just doesn’t inspire confidence right now, although the good ones aren’t all raking at 21 …. Those 3 plus Ramos and Roupp collectively putting in respectable 5-10 year careers would paint a somewhat less bleak picture of the drafting.

    • James's avatar James says:

And Tibbs 3 is still tearing it up at OKC for LA. Bailey will never be a star, but rebounding to his previous level of offensive production will keep him in the game for a good while.

    • James's avatar James says:

And Tyler Rogers is looking like he’s gonna pitch a few more years.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

What about Arraez? You criticized him for his low OPS . . . Now?

      • James's avatar James says:

He’s having a good year. He’s had them before. His limited power and and unwillingness to take a walk will likely prevent him from ever having a great year like 2023 again. Let’s hope they make a good trade.

  10. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Been saying this off and on for awhile we just have to draft better players. I would be perfectly happy if our FO would poach some successful scouts and pay them some big bucks to start getting some good ball players on board. I think the minors is where our biggest problem lies coaching and player evaluations.

  11. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Mahle tonight. Oh boy . . . Dear Lord, protect and bless Mahle from the Snakes, particularly K. Marte, whom is 8 for 12, with 2 bombs and 5 RBIs; and, G. Perdomo .429 BA and 3 RBIs. Amen . . .

  12. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Damn! Where would we be without Schmitt?!?

  13. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Mahle continues to blow up can they please get this chump out of the rotation!

  14. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

One of the few times I have heard boos from the wine sipping SF fans.

Yeah snarkk, I wish they would at least sit him for a couple of games.

  15. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

    This guy Mahle.

He sucks. They must take him out of the rotation. Somehow.

Vitello needs to use a lightning fast hook on him the rest of this game. Then, he goes to the pen or SAC or somewhere else…

  16. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

There we go! Eldridge is heating up. Keep giving him ABs Mr. V.

  17. willedav's avatar willedav says:

Good sign, base hit off LHP from Eldridge.

Don’t care where Schmitt plays as long as bat is in the lineup and it doesn’t seem to bother him either. Vs RHP I’d rather have Arraez at 2b and Schmitt in LF with Ramos out, as he will be for some time.

  18. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Damn, Bryce sent that a long way . . . Hate triple alley.

  19. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Tip my hat to Mahle. Got out of that jam and kept us relatively close after pitching 5 frames.

  20. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Yeah its kinda sad when all we get out of Mahle&Houser 3-10 combined is an occasional tip of the hat for going 5…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

      AK, you’re right . . . Sheesh, that’s how baseball in general has changed since the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s.

I know Marichal, Perry, etc., are shaking their heads from Heaven and saying, “WTF???”

  21. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Wrong pitch Devers challenged, i.e., should have been the last one the ump K’ed him on. lol

  22. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Another inning goes by another zero on the scoreboard! But hey Bertocco has his 1st big league hit and has an average

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

lol . . . Man AK, don’t do that. I was drinking a Pepsi, read what you wrote and it went up my nose.

  23. James's avatar James says:

It’s comical and infuriating how bad SF hitters are at ABS challenges. I wonder if Eldridge would have challenged that last terrible call if Devers hadn’t fucked up his.

    • James's avatar James says:

It’s almost like they’re challenging calls on close pitches they were surprised by and don’t want to be strikes rather than identifying the obviously shitty calls.

  24. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

And that’s a wrap on losing this series.Marte’s HR not confirmed from outer space yet..

  25. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Prior to 5/18, Marte was floundering, e.g., .222 BA. His physician recommended the Giants . . . You all know the rest of the story.

  26. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

. . . Unless we’re due for our weekly grand slam???

  27. willedav's avatar willedav says:

Haase bomb settles C ? once and for all. Susac and Haase with Rodriguez back to Sac to get more experience at position.

Lee is eligible to return Friday for weekend series vs. Rox. Schmitt takes LF. Case closed.

  28. willedav's avatar willedav says:

Nothing says more about Giants than that line I just read of MLB gameday.

Pitching substitution. Ryan Borucki replaces Erik Miller.

    good god

  29. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Did I say this team sucks? Well, so far tonight, Exhibit 30 something.

Comically, Adames with another throw headed towards Chase Center cements his MLB error lead with 12. Can Vitello just sit that dude for a game? Do we really need more throwing errors and Ks from him? $183 million buys us that. Will he bolt from the press again tonight, too? Just put Schmitt at SS tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez dropped another fly, and lets in a run, at least he’s consistent.

This game at 7-4 looks like a redux of one we just saw — Giants with Keystone Kops glove work and the Pen getting rocked. Why don’t they just walk Marte tomorrow on every AB? He and his OPS are going to miss facing the Giants.

Waiting for the first late innings comeback of the year…
