Dr. Jeckyll, Meet Mr. Hyde

Consistently inconsistent really seems to be the MO of this team. Not sure what they can do about it but here we are struggling to crawl to .500 while beating great teams and tripping over our dicks on those same teams. Having a blast so far. Made it to Tofino after being everywhere in these last 5 days.

After this loss, Giants are back under .400 . . . Think about that for a bit. Mind boggling that anyone thought they could be a Wild Card, much less a .500 team.

It would be nice if Rotucki might decide to cover 1B when a grounder is hit to the right side — kind of like you’re supposed to do if you’re pitching. But, no.

Some may say that this team is NOT phoning it in, but I dunno, I think I saw a couple of our guys in the field in between pitches — checking their iPhones…

The other night in the Met game some guy took his lead from 3rd a good 2 feet inside fair territory…

When is Niners camp? i still watch but have no hope Giants can win. Devers heating up a little but all empty stats. Out with runners on very at bat except for when he K’d leading off. SHS. Only 6 more years of this!

    SMH!

Maga billionairs fuck everything up and the Giants are no exceptions.

    • willedav's avatar willedav says:

2-7 since those first Ws on road vs. LA and those 2 were in West Sac minor league yard where they hammered ball. Just when you think things couldn’t get worse they give up 9 in 1 inning as McD melts down. wow

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Yeah it is unbelievable how badly we have been playing. At least we scored the 4th pick in the draft.

  7. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

After yet another embarrassing debacle last night, the Giants are now at 11 games underwater, just 51 games into the season. A pathetic .392 clip. This season they have won no games, none, when behind heading into the late innings. How does this team get better, at least short term. Forget respectable, how about just not embarrassing, stinking-turd awful ? The Giants are so bad, on national sports radio updates their scores are often not even mentioned, no matter who they play.

I don’t see how this Giants ship steadies course without big moves that cut dead weight, free up space for farmhands to play on the 26, and bring in more prospects from other systems not tainted with bad habits from Giants development. After 2 months, this roster just does not work, it’s horrendous, non-sensical. Playing Schmitt in LF, a position he’s never played, because he’s the best hitter on the team? Just weird, and spotlights that the outfield is a joke. But, the worst issue is the most chronic and hardest to fix — the scores of millions allocated to the Bore 4 of Chapman, Adames, Devers and Lee — players who are laughably pathetic non-performers at the plate.

Everybody probably agrees to start with Chapman. He has 1 homer, one — 51 games into the season. That is not a slump. That is flat awful at his pay grade, hell almost any pay grade. In the clutch, he is an infield dribbler and K machine. This has been his MO pretty much since Buster signed him. Do whatever it takes to jettison him; yes take back 50% or more of his wages to dump him and his 6 more years or whatever it is. Schmitt is his better at 3b when you consider glove and bat, yet earns 1/25 or so of Chapman’s annual nut. Dump Chapman and you replace him with a cheap, young, everyday solid 3rd sacker. Plus, third base becomes (net) a more reasonable salary position. And, it frees up a roster spot for another minor leaguer to come up and inject some energy into this team.

You can come up with your own scenarios for getting rid of the other 3. Devers I might keep, probably because nobody wants him without a truly uber-massive take back in salary, but mainly because his possible “return to the mean” upside is the biggest. Even if they could trade Devers, I think they prefer first knowing whether Eldridge is a bust as a 1st baseman. Maybe they already know the answer is yes? The “Bore 4” mess and joke outfield doesn’t event get to the issue of the awful Pen, ouch.

I think Buster will make one or more major moves like this, and soon. Hopefully, before they get hurt, also trade short-timers Ray and Arraez, too, for some good prospects. Buster is new to being trashed in the press and by fans — but rightly so for piloting this ship towards a black hole with massive, crap contracts. I hope he understands that waiting, waiting for the Bore 4 to somehow find themselves is like waiting for Godot, and way more costly in blocking long-term roster improvement. Big moves now may be thought as Buster panic moves, but that’s what happens when your ship nears the event horizon…

    • willedav's avatar willedav says:

idk who makes out lineup but if you wanted to “play the kids” today with LHP starter going would be day to get look at Bericoto in RF vs. Gilbert, who is awful vs. LHP/more serviceable vs. RHP. Eldridge and Susac are in there.

Devers is having great May overall. slash line .297/.346/.913 8 doubles 4 HRs. Getting rid of the others is just plain unlikely. Adames is owed $150 million over next 5 years and SS days are likely numbered. Chapman had nice double to RF late in the game but he’d still have to get going before other teams needing 3b (there are a few) might bite on trade.

then again, look at what Doval and Rogers brought–Rodriguez Tidwell Butto and Gilbert. zzzz Parks Harber (AA Richmond) might be better than any of them. Best Giants prospects aren’t above AA yet.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

One “nice double” by Chapman after 2 months of failure doesn’t cut it. I’m sure Buster is exploring how to get rid of one or more of these crap long-term deals. Unlike Farhan, he’s not afraid to pull the trigger. It won’t be easy, but nothing necessary, and painful, ever is. Gilbert is not a starter on any decent team, he’s in AAA. Bericoto is the latest “throw this guy against the wall and see what happens” non-plan. Maybe he’ll stick, who knows. Like I said, this OF is awful.

Maybe a big trade works, maybe it doesn’t (Devers), but he can’t do nothing further with this team careening towards “who cares” status in the summer and dog days. Even the thousands of dumbass Giants fans who pay tons of cash to see crap ball might finally decide not to waste more time watching (or not watching but going to the ballpark) this slow motion train wreck ….

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

There has to be something wrong with our minor league system. How can players not know how to run bases, bunt, keep their focus on the game, work the count, play their position, etc. It’s mind boggling to me. I don’t know if it’s we just draft badly or our system messes em up along the way. I keep thinking of players like Darrell Evans he was one of my favorite Giants I used to go to a lot of games and I don’t think I ever saw him make an error. I loved his intensity and focus on every pitch. Anyway I love the Giants but hate the way we are right now.

As far as the Giants it’s just so depressing.I agree with Snarkk&Blade and I’ve been saying it for awhile that Chapman has to go first creating full time gigs for Schmitt at 3rd and atleast Eldridge as DH.

The Outfield is a total shitshow with really only Lee&Ramos adding some value the rest what a joke,Brennan seriously .065 and he’s still here,Gilbert?(Gary Brown only good for a head rub from Pence, all these backups can be jettisoned., Yeah the only prospects are Davidson (AA) and Jordan( Emerald Nuts) who are along way away..

3 Catchers??What teams carry 3 catchers? And don’t bring totally stupid and get rid of one of the fewest players I appreciate watching in Luis Arreaz the fan base will be demand blood in protest..

Hey Paul, hope all goes well.

I’ve been in that medical neighborhood you’re apparently in, so I sympathize/emphathize strongly. Hang in there !

  10. willedav's avatar willedav says:

Problem with the whole Fire Someone! Bench them! Trade them! Cut them! scenario is it’s instant knee jerk reactions to more complex problems. Sure everyone feels better not having to watch Bailey hit anymore but who cares when they’re 11 below .500.

Logan Webb got mad end of season last year and complained this wasn’t a .500 team. So they fired retread Melvin for new guy, and there’s no more Burrell or Matt Williams or older pitching coaches… And what did that solve? This team is worse than last year, as is Mr. Webb himself.

If/when they cut loose Ray Mahle Houser, who takes their places in rotation?

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

All of the players, coaches and manager DESERVED to be fired or traded. Not a knee jerk reaction Willie . . . What you label “knee jerk reaction,” I label INCOMPETENT ownership, i.e., they do the hiring and firing of top level staff.

Bottom line? the folks ownership hired, got it wrong during the EXECUTION of their moves and whom they replaced the players, coaches, and manager with.

  11. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

No idea what this means, but this is part of the “recap” article from last night’s game:

“Hundreds of fans at Oracle Park removed their shirts and twirled them in the eighth inning in the trending “tarps off” phenomenon taking place in ballparks everywhere.”

Anyway, the ONLY way you would get me to pay money to see this shit show, would be to meet up with you Flappers for a reunion. Like Winder said, “. . . I love the Giants but hate the way we are right now.”

Snarkk, totally agree with your 10:33am, particularly what you said about Chapman. Give him or rather, his agent credit, he was able to negotiate a wonderful contract for him after his 7.1 WAR season. However, he’s on pace to match his injury shortened, putrid 2020 season with the A’s, whom got fed up with him after one more season with them. I may be wrong, but this season is his nadir . . . He has to go. I hope fans, Giants management, and/or Buster makes him so uncomfortable, that he says, “Don’t worry about my no trade clause . . . I want out too.”

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

The Giants have Schmitt standing right there ready to take over 3rd. He’s plenty fine to take that over. The trouble is finding some team to take Chapman without having to take back and pay 75% or more of his salary. If they can take agree to back salary a little or maybe a lot under that % mark, it’s gravy. Add Schmitt’s meager salary and the take-back amount, and that’s a way better payroll look for a solid, young 3b player.

Lee is arguably more difficult to trade. Nearly $19 million / year for what I consider a very average outfielder. Fast, but not quick, no base stealer, punch & judy hitter, a little over average glove, mostly warning track power, average arm. Way, way overpaid for those skills…

  12. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Again, I do not entirely blame Buster for attempting to make moves after the trade deadline last season; nor his off season moves before this season. I still think Buster knows far more baseball versus anyone else in the organization and particularly, here on the Flap. Likewise, he made more decisions in less than a year versus Zaidi, whom didn’t really do anything of consequence to improve the Giants.

However, most of Buster’s moves have failed. Exception is obviously Arraez and a couple of other moves that have been successful. I love the fact that Buster is appropriately impatient for results, like most of the Flap is. Thus, I expect him to continue making moves until he gets it right. Willie, just appropriating your 2 words here, i.e., this isn’t a criticism of you . . . Specifically, I think Buster is NOT making knee jerk moves, but honestly thought the players he traded for or signed as free agents, would make a positive difference. I also think Buster learns from his mistakes and will minimize same going forward.

I certainly hope ownership continues to support him and gives him the wherewithal to make positive changes at all levels of this organization.

    • willedav's avatar willedav says:

knee jerk moves are what angry fans clamoring for instant change want. why we shouldn’t listen to them no matter where they are.

I hope we can add Bader to list of guys that works out.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

The best GMs are pro-active, not re-active.

They recognize when it’s appropriate to make moves that improve the organization. Bailey got traded quickly after Buster figured out Susac was really good, and Rodriguez maybe is worth the risk as #2 because Bailey already proved over time he can’t hit. That’s not knee jerk, it’s pro-active. Dumping Chapman for Schmitt would not be knee jerk since Chappie has shown himself this last season and a half to be offensively degraded, while Schmitt has proved himself to be a real player — confirmed again by today’s jack.

      • willedav's avatar willedav says:

Last 2 seasons Matt Chapman has had OPS of .790 and .770. 2024 he was 7 WAR player, last year 4 WAR. You saw note on today’s game that showed how many d runs he has saved, among best of all 3b. Even if he hasn’t looked like as often as in past.

Dumping him off after 2 bad months is exactly a knee jerk reaction that ignores his recent history as a Giant. I think Chapman himself would love to get away from this poorly constructed team to a contender and I hope for his sake Giants can move him. But unless you are replacing his level of talent (7 WAR players don’t grow on trees) it’s not gonna move the needle unless any prospects they get eventually materialize. They already have Schmitt’s bat in lineup every day anyway.

      • willedav's avatar willedav says:

Take a look in B/R for what Chapman did last year. He was Giants 2nd best hitter for OB (.340) slugging (.430) and OPS outpaced by only Devers. He tied for 2nd in HRs at 21 with Ramos–in 166 fewer ABs. So for 2 bad months he’s “done?”

  13. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

    Boom! Bomb Schmitt!

  21. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Goddamit Devers wtf are you doing not hustling to first on a day where Chicago can’t catch a popup up on the infield.Uhh I just want to watch this majestic popup from home plate!

  22. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Schmitt continuing today, as I said above, to prove the point that he can easily take over for Chapman. He’s a plus move offensively over Chapman, and is as good a defender at third, as Chapman degrades there — 8 errors so far in two months. The salary dump positive effects are obvious, and open up the roster for youth infusion. Trading Chapman would be pro-active GM work and certainly not be “knee jerk”, it would make short and long term organizational sense.

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Problem is Posey was adamant taking over negotiations from Farnscam getting Chapman locked in for his 1st big move ending fortunately Z’s departure even though it wasn’t suppose to be his call yet.. Now I get and approved of his bold move addition of Devers at the time, but maybe Posey who has deep ties with Chapman even Melvin just doesn’t want to end up with egg on his face and obviously expects more out of him..So to be continued for now.
