Draft is Done > The Wonks Are Cranky + UDFAs

Here’s our score from the draft. Trade-backs galore, and we traded Dee Winters for a 5th round pick. Jaden Dugger. Another Gravedigger. The picks are the picks. At this point we won’t know for a couple years as usual, but the philosophy once again has me scratching my head.

Trading Winters since we got Greenlaw back is a huge risk to me. But we do have Gifford and Wallow, who both played pretty well when everyone else got hurt. And of course forgotten man, Nick Martin.

Getting Stribling is a very big red flag for Pearsall to get his act together health-wise. He is good to great when playing but that’s the rub. he’s missed a lot of playing time. And it has little to do with getting shot. Strib has what Shanny wants. Speed, blocking, and yards after the catch. Is his spot in the dog house already reserved? We’ll see.

The rest? Who knows? Height sounds good, and the pundits say the glowing things about him, but we will see when we see. He has speed and great hands, but he looks like he needs to bulk up a bit.

Shanny did his always dipshitty move of drafting an RB that would have likely been a 6th round/UDFA guy, but hey, get K Black at 3. The misbegotten spot in the Niners draft history.

We did draft a couple O linemen. Late as 12th so accurately predicted. Without trading down, they could have had Emmanuel Pregnon but alas, they don’t draft guards until the 4th round.

I will say though that since the draft wonks are utterly panning the 49ers picks, this will likely be a decent draft. After all they got an A for their efforts back in 2017 when they got Solly Thomas and Reuben Foster in the first round. Ooooops. That DID net us George Kittle tho. Thomas is at least still playing (forn the Titans and Robert Saleh), but he was no 3rd overall picks. Shit, they coulda signed CMC or Mahomie.

UDFAs

? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Even more iffy than the draft picks, but some guys, like Drake Nugent and Sebastien Valdez, stick.

Fixed it for ya. Easier to go thru YouTube.

Thanks again for the birthday wishes y’all. Ain’t getting any younger that’s fur sure. Officially at retirement age.

Had a nice weekend in Carmel. Friday was gorgeous. Sat and Sunday were rainy. Couldn’t go to big Sur as they were running a marathon up Highway 1.

And in Giants news, Jared Kuschner’s brother Joshua is now a minority owner of our beloved Giants.

Oh joy. Venture capital wonks are now going to weigh in on (profit margins) winning a championship.

I read somewhere that Bochy’s call of 2 trips to mound was factually wrong but umps agreed with him at the time. classic moment SF-LA history

Something to do with whether Donne-two-trips’ foot actually touched the pitcher’s mound, left it, and came back.

I will say one thing. The fact they spent a 3rd round pick on a running back who has caught 8 passes in TWO fucking years baffles the everliving shit out of me. A guy that was likely a late day 3/UDFA pick. Brilliant. It’s like Shanny WANTS a reason to overuse CMC.

So glad we picked Jordan James last year. I mean what the actual fuck? And Guerendo is doing what on this team?

  7. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Mahle ‘s doing ok so far. Hope I just didn’t jinx him.

Dan Duggan of TheAthletic.com reports that the Giants were looking for a second-round pick in return for moving Thibodeaux while the Saints’ best offer was believed to be a fourth-rounder. New Orleans ultimately traded a fifth-round pick to the Raiders for Tyree Wilson in order to address their desire for help on the edge.

we must be talking to NYG for Mac Jones to get Thibodeaux.

The 12 SOs (with Chapman whiffing 4 times) is what gets me, i.e., this is beyond boring . . . GMen should call themselves the “Melatonins.”

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

To me this is about the 3rd/4th year that Giants baseball has been difficult to watch at times. Looks like the best we can hope for is to be in the .500 neighborhood.

  14. willedav's avatar willedav says:

Ah, Luzardo dominated. Fastball was 97-99, plus curve and change. Ramos had nice double, everyone else, yuck.

Adames still confounds me, swinging at down and away soft stuff. What does he hope to do with that pitch? Ramos took one out to RF on homestand (second time he’s done that iirc) on beautiful swing but that pitch was up.

Giants did beat LHP C Sanchez last time they saw him but he’s very tough also. See what happens.

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy says:

yeah but …. Still can’t help but notice, as Winder implied, for a number of years now the product G’s have put out there is excruciatingly difficult to watch at times. And, the times those unwatchables occur seem to be ever increasing. Blade pointed out all the ‘whiffs’. Yep, whiff whiff whiff whiff .. really stinky on the ol’ eyeballs! And the, perpetually poor RISP performance. Of your course, you’re right Willedav, Lizzzardo was throwin’ down … but sheesh, tying all time franchise records for particular negative stats several times this season tells us something .. I’m not sure what, exactly but whatever it is, it ain’t fun to look at. I can only hope that “it’s still early” is still true .. we got sometime to turn it around, but not much. Come on Giants: LETS FUCKING GO!!!

  15. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Respected football analyst Warren Sharp threw public haymakers at John Lynch over his drafting ability. This is highly unusual, something very rarely done by someone of his standing. Whilst the likes of LoCo Jr throw barbs at the Niners weekly, this is something else entirely.

I can’t say for sure if this is a good or bad draft and nor can anybody else. What I can say is I predicted a DE or WR are first Niners picks and that O linemen will come at the back end of the draft. The Niners have taken a WR or DE first 70% of the time under Shanahan and Lynch and only a couple of times have taken O linemen in the first 3 rounds.

The Niner pattern of drafting is open to criticism because it goes against the norms without even hitting league wide averages for success. If you want to stick to your draft methodology it needs to yield at least average results or you are not smarter than the average bear.

These are some comments from Sharp:

    “Key Takeaways from Sharp’s Analysis

“Winning in Spite of Drafting”: Sharp argued the team’s success is due to trade acquisitions like Christian McCaffrey and Trent Williams, as well as the outlier success of Brock Purdy, rather than high-end draft hits. YouTubeYouTube +4

Persistent Reaching: Sharp determined that 25 of the 49ers’ last 33 picks (roughly 76%) were reaches compared to consensus draft boards.

Poor Draft Efficiency: His “Draft Capital Over Expectation” (DCOE) metric ranked Lynch’s last four draft classes near the bottom of the league, specifically placing the 2026 class as the absolute worst in the NFL.

Recent Class Criticism: Sharp took a “haymaker” at the 2026 class for picks like wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling (No. 33 overall) and running back Kaelon Black (Round 3), both of whom were seen as massive reaches.

  16. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

I’m in the camp that says the Niners coaching is elite and the drafting is sub-par. I like Lynch, I’ve met him personally a number of times and as a public figure he is awesome for the team, I don’t want to see him leave the team. I do think he needs a different job and part of that is because he is somewhat neutered by the personnel power of Shanahan whe repeatedly screws up in the same ways with his love affairs of QB, RB and WR that simply have not worked out.

I believe the Niners need a new GM with final say. Did anyone see Sean McVay’s face when his GM took a QB in round 1? Thats not helping the HC this year and that’s all a HC is interested in but the GM knows he has to replace Stafford next year and see’s that pick as being in the best interests of the team.

The Niners desperately need that point of view and let the HC coach.

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Been saying this for years as well. If not for Purdy, Lynch and Shanny should have been fired.

Rounds 1-3 have been awful in their 10 drafts. They have had so much success in the later rounds it baffles the mind to think how good this team could be if they had done better in the early rounds.

And yeah, the biggest problem with this team is Shanahan’s ego.

He won’t delegate play calling and he has way too much sway over the draft.

His game planning is excellent but he gets lost in the details during games and has yet to figure out how to close teams out.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Last year Shanny finally started to make adjustments during the game that worked. It also helped that we had a spectacular special teams. Hopefully we can build on that this year. I have so many mixed feelings about our drafts and have had for years. We must know something because we won 12 games when 2/3rds of the team were hurt. All those no name kids we got in the last couple of years showed up and played with big heart. I had never heard of any of the guys we got this year but I bet most of em will be here this time next year.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, I did say earlier that since Peters left, the drafts seem better. But man, that Black pick annoys me no end. It’s like they just think hey, this is a throwaway pick when they need O line help. Yeah they got O linemen but as usual they are late round fliers.

      12th nailed it.

And yeah you are right about adjusting. Shanny FINALLY started using play action on 1st down as we usually run 1000% of the time on 1st and goal.

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I’ve also been saying since the get-go that Lynch’s role, at least early on was simply the handshake guy on the sidelines. That most of the personnel and draft decisions go through Shanny. I think this is still true to a certain extent but I think Lynch gets a little more input as noticed by last year’s draft.

  19. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

I’ve never liked Shanahan for a number of reasons (most of them stated here by Unca, 12th man, Winder, etc.), e.g., draft face plants, adhering almost 100% to his written game plan, where he doesn’t make adjustments, and suspecting him of having too much influence with Lynch, insofar as the draft is concerned.

However, my biggest gripe is WHERE IS THE FREAKING SUPERBOWL TROPHY??? Frankly, I did not like his hiring after he blew the 28-3 lead the Falcons had over the Patriots in the 3rd quarter of SB LI, by not going to a ball control run game (Winder’s complaint about not making adjustments late in the game).

I also do not like the fact that he is the son of Rat Face . . .

Equally important, he was the Head Coach while losing 2 SBs, both against the Chiefs, not to mention his other 3 playoff losses (Rams, Eagles, Seahawks). Frankly, Eddie D. would have canned his ass long ago, so maybe I should be complaining about ownership? Maybe the Yorks I should be complaining about??? Both are about as useless as the “g” in lasagna.

    Dunno . . .

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

blade-there have been a lot of times I wished he would get fired.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Son of rat-face! Funny thing is, fucking Rat-face was the last OC to win us a Super Bowl. Never really liked him as well, but man, as I’ve said I think this team and this regime has just about run its course. They are on the downside of their run, regardless of Purdy’s trajectory.

I thought last year, if the team gets injured and doesn’t reach the playoffs, Shanalynch would be out, but they somehow managed to stay afloat. Mainly because of special teams and Jones doing a solid job of QBing.

Shanny DID make some adjustments. But the sticking with CMC WAY too long, time management screwups, and not adjusting his offense vs Seattke irks me still.

The Rams were very successful running two TEs agasint that defense, and with the emergence of Tonges, they had a great opportunity to exploitn that weakness.

But alas we get the ‘my way or the highway’ approach of Shanahan. The smartest guy in the room (that hasn’t won a chip).

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Probably inadvertent, but Shanahan screwed over the reputation of the previous Broncos coach, Dan Reeves, whom assembled all the pieces of those SB teams, with the key exception of Terrell Davis. Atwater, Elway, Sharpe, Braxton, Nalen, etc., were all pieces that contributed to those 2 SB wins.

Concurrent with the aforementioned, I moved to Colorado in 1997 and had to witness those SB wins. Grrr . . .

  20. willedav's avatar willedav says:

NFL HC has to be hardest gig there is in major sports. so many layers btw HC and all the various co-ordinators and position coaches down to players. Look how long it took Andy Reid to win one.

I can understand his input on what types of players he wants in order to compete every week and these guys put in monster hours btw games. Sure Niners couldn’t beat Hawks, but no one else could either and they won the SB. No disgrace, imo and despite all the injuries they hung in there to the end. Reload and get after it.

    Erp. Nope. Uh oh.

  23. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Just to be clear, I am not for firing Lynch or Shanahan. I do think they need to diminish Shanahan’s involvement in picking specific players and that Lynch should not be the defacto GM choosing players, that should go to a proven winner in the same way the Rams, Seahawks and Eagles do it. As long as the GM is competent in player evaluations and fit of course. I also think too much is made of the “Golden Helmet” “Right Character” deal. I know Lynch tripped on his dick over Ruben Foster but that shit happens from time to time. Go get some dogs as Donte Whitner said, enough with the ivy league “nice guys”.

There is no better HC available than Shanahan IMO. I do blame him for the second SB loss with his coin toss decision, that alone lost the SB. But the very reason they were there and have been there multiple times and won 12 games whilst playing on one leg last season is also Shanahan. I think he, much like Andy Reid, needed the losing experiences to make smarter decisions. I think Shanahan, if he gets this team back in a SB will win it.

  24. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I’m not advocating for Shanny’s firing either but there’s no way he will acquiesce to giving up play calling duties, or a diminished role in drafting. So there may not be an alternative to that.

And I’m just getting the vibe that he’s still making the same mistakes that have following him since that Atlanta Super Bowl loss. 3 run plays, kick FG and Atl wins. Instead it’s holding call, run for loss, sack and they punt.

He absolutely gagged up the 2 Suer Bowl losses and the NFCCG to the Rams. All of those games he had a 10 point lead plus possession in the 4th quarter and blew them all.

    New thread is up.

Super Bowl Win, Purdy Please
