Starting the Shit-Show Early

Here we are in February, the same month as the Super Bowl, and we have our first contract impasse. Trent Williams and the team are “struggling to find a contractual solution” according to John Lynch. Something they’ve been working on since that crap-ass Super Bowl. Oh goodie. A team that has O line woes may lose their best lineman to free agency.

Will this get the 49ers brass to pay attention to the line in the draft?

We’ll find out one way or another.

    Great movie. Better soundtrack

  2. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Trent sat out the entire off-season last time and basically showed up week 1. I don’t think that happens this time or that he gets traded, they will figure it out.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

It seems like it’s always something with us. He knew he had us by the short hairs last time and I’m pretty sure nothing had changed

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Well, it’s just too fucking stupid that this happens over and over and over with this front office.

Either sign TW or cut bait. Now.

The dithering through free agency AND the draft will fuck the team up no end.

Jennings will be next. I don’t want to throw a ton of money at him but they should be able to meet somewhere in the $23 mill range. He’s a hard-nosed guy who is a solid 2.

If they don’t think so, move on.

The main point here is they have fucking NOTHING to replace them with.

The front office built this problem themselves and are trying to nickel-and-dime their way out of it.

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Yeah I don’t understand why they keep stretching this bullshit out and you are right they contiually dol this shit.

  3. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

My 2c is Trent stays on a new 2 yer deal but Jennings is gone, too expensive. Both those decisions will be fairly quick as they have a big impact on free agency and the draft.

  4. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Bosa will be a huge problem next year, his balloon payments come due which means a rework of his contract or cut him loose. His overall value has been outside of the top 5 for 3 years now and then tearing another ACL last year really dinged his projected value. He will have every incentive to tear it up this year in what will essentially be a contract year for him.

I’m thinking the Niners might want to draft an edge guy in case they don’t want or can’t afford Bosa.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Yeah, we probably will go with an edge with our #1. But we need to get some OL’s and groom them because they are rarely able to just step in. This continual FA scrap heap of OL’s that we have been doing seems to be sufficient at times but it always shows that it’s one of our weak spots. I still think Purdy should be out top priority. The problem with this draft is we need WR’s too. Both Cowing and Pearsall haven’t proved they can stay on the field for more than two weeks.

      • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

They really need a starting LG and a better C. They will need soon a starting LT and that could be real soon but I don’t think so, I think Trent stay 2 more years.

WR is close to zero productivity if Jennings goes. Pearsall hasn’t scored a TD even during his healthy last season and just 3 TD in total for the 49ers. Not exactly scary.

Watkins barely saw the field even when they were scraping the bottom of the barrel to get a warm body receiver on the field so that showed their evaluation of him as a pro WR. Lynch just said Watkins has to make a big leap this year.

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Utter failure drafting WRs. Deebo and Aiyuk were good to great but are now gone. The rest are crap in 9 drafts. If not for Purdy, these guys have a terrible record. At least in rounds 1-3.

    • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Isaaih Lively is an all around George Kittle type an̈d an FA, Get him and rotate Tonges-Lively with Kittle.

  6. Winder's avatar Winder says:

I know we came close last year and played our asses off to the get that far. I just wish I could look on the bright side a little more because I think we are a little to old to compete with teams like Seattle. Even if we get Williams back I bet he misses 5+ games, same with Kittle and Bosa. It’s possible Warner can do a little better than that but I’m pretty sure that McCaffrey is due for one of his 7/8+ years. And we are just gonna spin our wheels. The only way our window isn’t closed is if no one gets seriously injured and I wouldn’t bet on that. The bright side is we have defensive players who could really turn into good 49er players this year.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

C Tyler Biadasz was released by the Commandos in a cost-cutting move.

    320 lb. Do it.

I’m encouraged getting Morris to run the defense.

I just wish Shanny would learn some new things.

    • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

What really handcuffed Shanahan was the WR group. Without the need to defend more than 20 yards from the LOS every snap whatever D they faced was basically able to play red zone D, where everything is condensed. No room to run or catch, especially against athletic D teams. Combine that with a lightweight C and a sub-par LG and a RG that played injured and a RB who wasn’t as dynamic as before and you get what we saw.

I credit Shanahan for getting what he did out the circumstances. Having said that, he absolutely could have let some of the young guys onto the field and paired the right 2 TE to create mismatched. For such a creative guy he is very conservative with his personnel.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Shanny can’t get out of his own way a lot of the time. All this leads back to the fucking Harbaugh offense that never took risks and kept everything within 20 yards of the LOS. Shanahan is a much better offensive mind, but the end result, and yeah, some of the issues had to do with no BA, no Ricky, and his not using the speed guys he has, but yeah, defenses eat that shit up.

Seattle’s defense is perfectly matched to stuff our offense.

That also kills the run game. People are dogging CMC saying he’s lost a step, but it has more to do with the fact that EVERYONE knows who is getting the ball. Teams can defend our run game as we don’t take shots downfield so the LBs creep up a couple yards and fill the gaps.

And on Shanny’s side, he DOESN’T adjust the offense to take advantage of how teams defend us. The best way to attack a pressure D is with quick slants. 2 TE formations that we have noted and beaten to death here.

It really sucks that Pearsall can’t stay on the field. The game I saw vs the Titans, he was open ALL DAY. Just about every play he was clear. And they have a pretty good defense. Dude never missed a game in college.

Not interested in C Tyler Biadiaz who I believe is getting cut loose cause Skins are worried his knee won’t hold up,sure don’t need a IR candidate signing like that ..

The Center and the ONLY Center I want is Tyler Linderbaum the best in the game at only 25 with 3 straight All-Pros first string on his resume!Shanny’s a fool if he doesn’t wise up and see Brendel is a weak link at C against strong DL teams(Seahawks/Rams especially in are division push them around)

Sign Linderbaum (yeah he will end up the highest paid center but I don’t give a shit he’s that good) draft the massive 6’7 366 lb Proctor to play LG till Trent retires then slide him over, it’s not fucking rocket scientist it’s the OL that needs the overhaul. But with LT,Williams,LG Proctor,C Linderbaum,RG Puni,RT McKivitz that’s a good start!

  9. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Priority is edge/defensive line (as others have noted, e.g., Winder, etc.), i.e., defense wins SBs . . . Second, fix the offensive line, particularly the left guard situation. Good example of why? Replay the Seattle game – we got our asses kicked, where our QB was running for his life back there.

Lastly, get a competent WR or 2 . . . Pearsall is good, but this MIA 24/7 is getting old. Pfffttt . . . Bye bye Ricky. Seriously, our receivers couldn’t separate during that Divisional game with Seattle, where are receivers looked slow against the ‘hawks fast secondary.

      • where “our” (not are)
      • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Word is that coach and management were not thrilled about Ricky sitting out so many games last year. The opinion being it was more a pain management thing than anything structural.

I.E. Ricky was soft, and a trade is plausible.

  10. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

The worst WR room in the NFL last season and it’s not close.

  11. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

I’m not an avid combine or draft guy particularly. The underwear Olympics and work out warriors in particular, sway the draft positions more than they should IMO. What the players did in college, how many games they played and against what level of opponent as well as if their bodies could hold up means way more to me.

I relied on NJ for his research and his draft slotting to narrow in on particular players.

    Miss ya buddy.

  12. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

And they never listened to him. We’d be in better shape with his guidance.

  13. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

12th man, I am hoping we can draft Concepcion from Texas A&M. Probably has the most explosive speed in this draft and would be perfect in Shanahan’s system.

    • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

I haven’t checked out the WR highlights or draft reports yet Blade but his name is one of the first I hear about from the talking heads. I guess it’s time to dig in a little.

I’m hoping some of the guys on here who keep up with the college game who think a certain player fits the Niners throw a name out like you have, it helps given everyones limited time.

Berger usually throws out a few nuggets, typically linemen, a few weeks before the draft. I know he and NJ worked on it together.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Didn’t know NJ, but sounds like a wonderful person. 12th Man, sorry for the loss of your friend.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Blade, NJ had been here since I started this on blogspot about 16 years ago, and before that on the Chron’s Niner Insider. Die hard fan and his draft breakdowns were better than 99% of the taking heads out in the interwebs. His post up above was the first post on this blog in 2011.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

You too Unca, i.e., very sad about the loss of your friend. Just read that post (again) . . . Yes, I see what you and 12th Man are talking about.

  14. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Well, since no one is talking about football . . . Per one source, Gmen are rated 17th in MLB Line Up rankings:

    Grades: Hit: C | Patience: C- | Power: C- | Baserunning: F | Durability: A+ | Depth: D+ | vsR: C- | vsL: D+ | Stars: 5 | Holes: 1

Apparently, the Giants are too slow to get injured, so expect to see a lot of the same players standing around day after day playing station-to-station offense for a team with middling power.

The depth of the lineup, illustrated here by the star count, looks like a plus.

    • Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen says:

“Too slow to get injured”… that’s funny, Steve… 🙂 Hey, at least they aced durability. I don’t know, we’ll see, but I think the offense will score more runs this year. I still have little faith in about 40% of the current starting rotation…

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Paul, I think our park is about 10-15% advantage to our pitchers, so yeah, I get your point, but I am hoping that at least the staff overall keeps the ball inside the park, where it gives our defense a chance to make plays.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Defense? Bader should help the Matos follies out there. And Ramos needs to tighten his shit up pronto.

  15. Winder's avatar Winder says:

I like this years Giants better than last years team. Not totally sure why but I thinks it’s mostly the coaching change bringing a different atmosphere and some of these guys are hitting pretty good in AZ.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Me too Winder. Maybe I have Alzheimer’s and forgot how bad the 70s era teams were, but that was a boring ass team last year. If this coming season is a snooze fest like last year, I am checking out after the end of May, perhaps sooner.

    https://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/199464-seriously-consider-trading-jonathan-greenard/

I like this alot. Trade Mac Jones to Minn Vikings for their 6 yr Edge Greenard 28 yr old 6’3″ 259 lb with 35 ” arms. 38 sacks over 6 years , in 2025 in only 12 games he had only 3 sacks but was All-Pro in 2024 with 12.5 sacks. Last year a shoulder injury needs our docs to ok this trade.

  17. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Also Tre Lance’s brother in this draft. WR 6’3 204 lbs and runs the 40 in 4.36 or so. Kenyon Sadiq is 6’4 241 lb TE who runs a Vernon Davis like 4.39 40 and very good spring in his legs. He may be gone in mid teens tho.

His first name is Bryce (?) and also from North Dakota State as Tre.

Would love to have the ghost of McCovey (Eldridge) blossom this season. Sheesh, Giants haven’t had much to get excited about, insofar as rookies since Posey, Lincecum, and Bumgarner 15+ years ago.

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Yeah wouldn’t that be something. The Giant’s always had a couple of sluggers on the team even the 85 squad had Leonard and Chili.

Anyway the fucking Rams just got a pro-bowl cb from KC. It did cost then next years first which will probably be closer to a 2nd.

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Kept thinking that Jack Clark was still on the team then but we must have gotten rid of him the year before.

  19. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Eldridge coming through would be big, but is he really trying OF? All i’ve heard is that he’s playing 1st. Devers’ spot.

Derp. I read the article. I guess they will flip-flp between DH/1st base.
