Draft Draft All Day Every Day (O-Line Be the One)

Well, the sports landscape hits the Sargasso Sea of things going on. Or is it the Horse Latitudes? Basketball slogs on through its endless amount of regular season games. about 20 too many, baseball is juuuust starting to poke its head out of the frozen tundra, and oh yeah there is the Olympics, if that is your bag.

I do enjoy the skiing and the various ways men and women slide down a frozen river at 90 MPH, but other than that, quiet time. NFL draft time. Various mock sites have us taking Kenyon Sadiq the TE from Orygun. Big fuck no to that. Even going DT like Caleb Banks would be someone I would pass on. Only for the reason that we NEED to protect Purdy at all costs. As the Seattle games showed, Purdy struggled under the relentless pressure of their 4-man cover 2 defense.

We couldn’t run or pass. And the reason the 49ers won the 1st game was because the defense was healthy, and the Sourdough Sam offense was finding its way. Well, they were still pretty inept in the Super Bowl, and a few of their other wins. Which is why it is imperative that we get Purdy and the offense help.

Other than that, sad to hear Greg Brown, original lead guitarist for Cake passed away. Very cool Sacto band with a very distinct sound. The trumpet solo from War Pigs is great.

Speaking of Seattle. never knew about this video. if you haven’t heard Jar of Flies, it is an excellent EP.

For a while it was the biggest selling EP ever.

what to do with Jennings? Is there $$ line Niners shouldn’t cross, given uncertainty Pearsall can stay healthy, etc.

Meanwhile happy Fat Tuesday to all, laissez and all that. Couple Nola groups are in Bay Area, Cyril Neville over in Berkeley and Rebirth Brass Band as well.

No idea. This team is seemingly toxic for WRs. They either die on the vine, diva themselves out, genuinely suck, or are hurt all the time.

Jennings is no #1. Even #2 is pushing it. He’s like a 2.5 WR. But he is tough, strong and a solid blocker. I think $23 mill is the high for him. If he overvalues himself, well, he may just hit the road like Deebo and BA.

It really fucking baffled me with BA. He had an outstanding year with Purdy in 2023 and just fucked himself sideways by his own doing. He SAW what happened to Deebo (and even Bosa) and still thought he had a good strategy going in.

Now he’s just screwed himself to the point of being a high-risk signing as he’d cost $27 mill to his new team and immediately be questioned for his desire.

He lost all his guarantees so, he’d better not fuck the next opportunity up. Got to wonder about CTE.

As f baseball wasn’t in enough trouble, Tony Clark, the longtime head of the Major League Baseball Players’ Association, was asked by the union’s player leadership to resign on Monday due to the old ‘inappropriate relationship’ with his sister-in-law, an employee of the MLBPA.

He’s also under investigation for ‘inappropriate use of funds’.

    A standing double.

6’4 245 TE is 4 yrs out of college and good both receiving and blocking. Also jusczuk will be 35. He is perfect for Shanalynch. Both for two TE with Kittle and a substitute for Jusczuk.

FS for $8 million that Raheem Morris drafted for ATL in 2020

      DT 3-technique for $8 million . John Franklin-Meyers last 2 seasons 7 sacks each.

WR Romeo Doubs as an X.

      C Ethan Pocic from CLE

My general philosophy for the draft has changed a bit over the years.

I now believe you must draft for D in the critical positions of CB and DE/DT rusher and thats because those players are never attainable as free agents and trading for one is so expensive in draft capital.

I also generally believe you need more talented players on D as that side of the ball its less scheme and more one on one which is where talent really matters. On O a great scheme and elite play calling can overcome a lack of skills.

I agree the O line has to be addressed this year but I would trade or sign a free agent center and draft a LG. I think a pass rusher should be the first pick, I prefer a DE but a rush DT is also badly needed. Guards can be had later in the draft.

Currently in order of draft talent availability: pass rush DE or DT, WR, S, TE, LG, RB, LB

These positions could change after free agency but as of now thats how I think the talent depth looks with this draft.

That’s not to say that if a gift of Tackle or any other position falls to the Niners that I wouldn’t take it, but I think that this is a draft where there are talented players to be had in later rounds. In fact I would strongly consider trading back for more draft capital.

    • Berger's avatar Berger says:

Bill Walsh wrote that in a book. He said he could call plays to get round a weakness on offense, but you can’t do that on defense. He also said, if there is a weakness in the defense, teams will find it and exploit it. The one thing he and Siefert both concentrate on more than anything was the D-line.

      • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Looking at the Seahawks they didn’t react to any of the motion stuff and didn’t sub. Neither did the Texans, and its because their D players were so talented they could just wait for the play to start and beat the lesser talented O players straight up, regardless of scheme.

The Niners need more talent on both sides but its very hard to gain great talent in free agency or trade so they have to prioritize D in the draft unless a gift falls to them.

  12. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I just read a headline that says the 49er are linked to Isaac Seumalo of the Steelers. I would love that FA signing. He is aa ten-year vet at LG. He is very good at run and pass.

    • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Is he really only 305 lbs range. Unless he added 10 lbs of muscle to that, needs to be Puni size and not puny.

Maybe it’s time to get an Elon Optimis humanoid robot for C and LG.

  13. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

In general I agree with your ranking of priorities. But Trent is in the danger zone and ideally #27 needs to be LG -> LT and pass pro more important than zbs ability. We draft late in each round so a balanced TW type tough to get.

Need a 2nd from Mac Jones trade. We have to be aggressive and accept overpaying FA’s for Alex Mack size OC, FS, X WR, and especially DT 3-technique to allow us to avoid drafting an edge this year and keep Huff.

Too many bad drafts and Lynch has to own them. Tre Lance was stupid. Losing those 1st’s killed the oline to this day. Those 2 drafts after Lance should have gotten him canned. Bump him to a President title and get a new GM.

    • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

If a LT thats worth that spot or better I would certainly take him Tom, I wouldn’t take a guard there. This draft is deep on O line and they can get a guy later to fill the need.

I agree on trading Jones for a #2, or a #3 and a player type of trade. I would not trade him for just a #3, they will get a #3 comp pick next year when he leaves.

I agree on paying for a starting C and a WR although not top dollar guys that break the bank and put them back in WR hell they just escaped from.

I would let Huff go in a trade.

Too many bad drafts is right, the last 2 are trending better though.

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Well, Seattle sure did prove (again) that a strong defense can carry a middling offense to the championship. And by far the weakness of the team was the lack of pass rush and the intercaptions it didn’t create. The run D got a little better until everyone got hurt.

I guess I wouldn’t be against drafting a DE, but will a good one still be there at 27?

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again that I think Lynch is not making the decisions. Shanny is the de facto GM and Lynch is there to shake hands.

I sure would like to see a better guy in there. Much like Shanny’s stubbornness in play calling.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Until we figure out our injury bullshit it isn’t gonna matter who we draft. I would still focus on our Oline you are gonna get a lot better talent. in the first 3 rounds than the later rds. We just have to make good selections. I also would dump Aiyuk in the cheapest way possible he has jacked us around for way to long already. To bad about Jennings but if you have soured on the team go to some other fucking team. Since we always have problems with our WR’s it kinda makes we wonder if Shanny isn’t part of the problem. Anyway I think the guys we drafted last year will be much better this year.

Niner Nation thinks the Niners should go after Bradley Chubb. Miami seems to be in a semi rebuild mode?

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Shit, he’s a free agent. Didn’t see the fins released him. He would seem to fit our new defense more than out old defense. Miami ran a 3-4 with Chubb at OLB.

  18. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

I think we will see more of the 5 down lineman type of fronts that Saleh somewhat used late last year.

I also think the D scheme needs a shake up and I think that the golden helmet choir boy thing may have gone too far.

I know Lynch got burned with his bad boy but we can fix him choice of Ruben Foster. The truth is Foster was talented and that half of anybodies draft picks don’t make it. It doesn’t mean that you can only take players birthed by Mother Teresa.

They need a few dogs on D.

Jennings was a dog in the WR room and that did set a tone, when he’s gone who is going to step up there?

I believe Shanahan has quite a lot of sway on the O choices and that he isn’t good at it.

On D I think its basically Lynch and the D coordinator if that coordinator has standing.

I like the idea of moving Lynch up and bringing in a defacto GM and letting him find the players. Shanahan is too impulsive with too much input and Lynch just hasn’t been good enough.

  19. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Scouting, position and unit coaching, and O and D coordinates all have to make the product work. Our overall draft person is inferior to Seattle.

We also have a lot of old stars. The lack of performance improvement from younger players is due to staff quality.

  20. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Be still my beating heart the 9ers signed Nick Zakelj to a 1 year deal.

I think him and Trent Taylor are as close to the invisible man as I’ve ever not seen.

Beam me up Scotty. Not now, Im taking a shiiii…

  21. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Yeah 2 invisible souls for sure 12th.Never figured why they kept Trent Taylor around he was washed up already imo..

Zakeji however could still have value since he can play both guard and center and for 1 year no big deal since their probably going to cut Bartch& Burford is a F/A that might not be back..

  22. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Since we all know but it never happens in drafting OL1st rd since Mike McGlincey (sp)2018 I might add,I’m reserved in the facts that Shanylynch just doesn’t give a shit are just have never had the abilities to draft great potential players up front..

So it will back dipping into F/A and now a real gem is coming out( says he’s not going back to Cleveland Browns,he’ll who could blame anyone from there?)in Left Guard Wyatt Teller a 3x pro bowler a real road grinder / pancake smashing player, a perfect fit in this run scheme, go after him!!

  23. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Last two Seattle games shown the spotlight and oline blown out of the water with pocket collapse. Shanalynch FAIL and changes are being dictated on them.

Brendel 6’3 300 and Burford 6’4 300 lbs says nfl.com. Bartch is an injury machine.

Who did this. Shanahan, Chris Foerster, run and pass game coaches. What would be obvious choices. LG and C need to be 315 lbs. Fix C in FA for a starter to groom Matt Hennessy. Trade Brendel and calling defensive assignments ain’t rocket science.

Try #27 on a 315 plus LG/LT maybe Morgan Freely (sp) or better.

Whatever it will take dollars. Where is spend priority , maybe OC is a 10 to 20 million FA and #27 for the future LT. The current OC/LG cannot protect Purdy from serious injury.

    Purdy is priority 1.

    • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

maybe OC is Hennessy and Zakelj? Both are 315 and pass pro demands size. Just do it. No more undersized centers.
