New Year . . . Old Story

Well, Tatum Bethune is out for the Philly game with a torn groin, and any other subsequent game should it come to that. So we are down to Erik Kendricks as the starting middle linebacker.

Yay. Crystal Todd Pearsall is our latest elf on the shelf, and we are not sure if he will be out there. Trent Williams? Another question mark heading into this roadie in Philly next Sunday.

Both lines looked about as terrible as they could have last Saturday. Short week? Unprepared? Out-coached? Yes to all. Saleh has really developed a major flaw in his 3rd down defense. Time and time again last week, Seattle was able to keep drives going on 3rd down conversions. They punted once. Their issue, which may be a huge problem against better teams, is their own misadventures getting into the end zone. 18 pts vs Indy? Please. 13 points against our wasted defense? The Bears put up 38 on us.

But enough about Seattle. Philly’s defense, while not nearly as tough as Seattle’s, still has a decent pass rush but they are 28th overall. We should be able to run on them. If we can do that, I think we can keep their middling offense out of the end zone.

I hope.

Hey as far as an idiotic stupid coach goes it’s Nick Sirianni who rests his stars and by doing so loses out the #2 seed to Guardians of all team’s starting Josh (I’ve been every where manJohnson )including twice with the 49ers but ends up winning his 1st game in 7 years! It would have been an easy cakewalk over the Packers who are just as banged up as Niners. Now he’s got the 49ers instead and yeah on paper they should be the favorites but I can’t write off are guys yet playing against dumbshit Sirianni and his butt sucking security guard Dom. Does any other team in the league have a clown like him hovering on the fucking sidelines??

Haha, Kat, tell us how you really feel… 🙂 Eagles are inconsistent this year and definitely beatable if they have an off game. But they’re also capable of putting it all together in a big playoff game, as we saw last year. Watching Niners highlights from the Seattle game (and granted, I only saw the highlights video, not the whole game), I was just so surprised: where were all the downfield passes? Where was CMC running off tackle for big gains? It just didn’t look like the Niners I’ve seen (admittedly not the Niners expert you all are). Was Seattle’s D that good?

SEA Dline very good and little time for Brock to get a pass off. Trent Williams out all game with hamstring. The backup Austin Pleasants , LG Burford, and OC Brendel

Paul, both lines played awful. Esp the 0 line. They couldn’t run or throw. Shanahan started out too conservative in my mind. And the defense gave up something like 7/13 3rd down conversions.

Shanahan had no answer for Seattles pressure. No quick passes. The d played too soft on 3rd down. Then the 3rd and 17 fail.

not having Williams and Pearsall hurt. But LA did a great job vs Seattle by playing 2 TE sets. But Shanny can’t figure that out.

  6. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

With Pearsall out the speedy deep threat was gone. Safeties played closer to line an̈d blitzed more.

Rooting hard for your team and hope you guys are all ok…

Same to you, DJ. Sorry (not sorry) about your Chiefs. Happy new year!

  9. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

WR Jacob Cowing (remember him) had his window opened this week.

A cynic might say it’s because they have little confidence in Pearsall staying anything close to reliably healthy right now and that Cowing is the only other fast receiver available on the squad except rookie Jordan Watkins, and we know how Shanahan feels about playing rookie WR’s.

Let’s hope Cowings rubber band hammy holds up and he gets on the field. They desperately needed a WR to take the top off against the Hawks and need the same against the Eagles.

2 TE sets, Kittle and Tonges, Kyle.

They don’t let Sirianni anywhere near playcalling and for good reason. They have that doofus “big (fat) Dom on the sideline to babysit Sirianni who thinks putting on his angry face is head coaching 101.

With 6 HC jobs open already it’s a sure bet Saleh’s gone. Miami want to interview 3 guys from our scouting department. All of them have been with the Niners for years in different jobs. McDanials knows all of them, and that is a testament to our recent drafting. Have a feeling we are gonna pick up some extra draft picks. I think Saleh goes to the Giants or Vegas.

  12. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Saleh was dealt a bad hand with all the injuries and still got some decent production. But I would love to see a more aggressive style of defense going forward.

Our CBs aren’t terrible but the la k of pressure led to very few INTs.

A Loo sighting! Hope you’re doing well there, good sir.

  16. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

There’s gonna be at least 6 firings so Saleh is likely gone. Pete the Cheat is already out. Along with Harbs.

Hey Loo – hope you are well! Paul, you too 🙂

Shanahan wont be fired, but he NEVER has a plan B . . . Agree with 12th man, that he SHOULD HAVE USED MORE 2 TE SETS! In fact, watch this “Cohn and Cohn” discussion, where the elder Cohn suggests exactly that:

Two of my least favorite humans, but they are right once in a blue moon!

What kills me is the Rams used 2 TEs to great effectiveness just a couple weeks earlier.

Shanahan can’t get out of his way so many times. I’m sure he’ll win a Super Bowl someday. I just wonder if it will be with the Niners.

He’s travelling down the Andy Reid highway.

All the caveats they give to Josh Allen, Mahomes, etc. are just such bullshit. Cohn is up there with Nick Wright in the shit-on-Purdy train. Purdy came back in the 4th quarter in two playoff games in a row in 2023. He’s won numerous big games. If not for the defensive collapse and Shanny’s error in OT, he’d have a Super Bowl win.

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Shanahan came out SO conservative this game. Never tried quick passes and any different looks.

Super Bowl Win, Purdy Please
