. . . Is an Oncoming Train

Yeah, I’m stumped. I guess we are just too hurt to play any kind of consistent football. Against Atlanta we controlled the lines and win fairly easily. Yesterday we were dominated ginormously on both sides of the line and lost pretty badly to a 2-5 Texans team.

Yeah, they have a good defense, but our defense decided to go back to the tried and true soft zone with a 4 man rush. All that resulted in was a bunch of long-ass drives that led to scores.

Still and all, if the offense could have done anything fucking right, they could have put up a fight. I don’t know. Purdy and Pearsall may never play football again based on “they’re getting closer” but I guess they are crawling out of the trainer’s room. Jones is getting tired of getting slammed on just about every drop-back and isn’t hitting his spots. The run game vanished again.

Can’t really understand how the Texans are sucking so bad with that defense. Seattle made them look silly with pressure and spotted Houston 4 turnovers and still won handily.

As good as Shanny and Saleh coached the Rams and Falcons games this year, they equally sucked balls in this game and the Tampa Bay game. Not sure where we go from here. Other than New York. Another sub-.500 team. Another east coast game. That seems to be a challenge for us.

The wins against the Rams and Saints were highlighted with multiple dropped passes from both teams. Like I said a few weeks ago, I think this is a .500 football team. Without a pass rush, opposing QBs will all look calm and collected. Long scoring drives will be often. Our offense will he limited opportunities. I thought we should’ve kept Malik Collins. He was a good one gapping interior rusher.

This goes back, for me, to the fucking Nolan era where we played this vanilla bend-and-break defense that just gave up 12 8-yard plays in a row. Much like the last 2 years. My contention then (and now) was, blitz if you can’t stop their offense. Letting a pro QB have 4 seconds is gonna result in a bunch of completions. With all our horses healthy, they do get better pressure, and even in the Atl game they got Penix off his mark and forced him into a lot of incompletions. They did it with a lot of 4 man rush, but they blitzed more than usual and it worked.

But if you can’t stop the run, you set yourself up for big fat gains. Oh yeah, Houston got those as well.

Both the TB and Houston games saw no pressure and no adjusting. Mayfield carved us up. As did Stroud. Well, we did blitz more in the Hou game in the 3nd half, but in the end it didn’t matter.

Yeah, this team as of now is too hurt to play any kind of consistent football.

Our only hope is to stagger into the playoffs and hopefully get healthier.

Maybe it’s possible we could trade Juan Jennigs for a pass rusher? Miami has Bradley Chubb, a DE. the Saints have Cameron Jordan, a DE. Those seem like even trades, an above average WR for an above average pass rusher. They were both excellent pass rushers at one time, but they are older now. Jennings is still young.

I wonder what it would cost to get Arden Key from the Titans?

We just lost Trevis Gipson to the Panthers. He wasn’t much, but more than we could afford to lose at the moment. I’m looking for a silver lining.

We just traded for DE White of NE.

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Just saw that. 6th round pick. We get White and a 7th round pick.

Decent year last year. Not getting playing time this season.

Looks like we signed Clelin Ferrel.

Maybe the Niners will still trade for a true edge rusher before the deadline?

Ferrell and White are rotational guys, neither are needle moving edge rushers. The Niners are really thin on the D line and that’s what this looks like to me, replenishing rotational guys that have been lost to trade and/or picked off the PS.

He did but 3.5 sacks, 28 total tackles and 1 forced fumble in 23 and almost identical stats in 24 for the Skins, which means with half a season left to play we can expect half of those numbers for the rest of the season and that’s presuming he can still perform at that level.

In 24 Keion White had almost double Ferrells output so I have a little bigger hope for him to have an impact but again, neither guy can reliably rush off the edge.

I am hoping they still trade for an impact edge rusher, not a major name type guy they have to give up serious draft spots for but still a guy that threatens the QB off the edge.

Yeah, at this point we need bodies that are fairly reasonable. I said it even before this latest barrage of injuries that they aren’t gonna break the bank trading players or high picks away. They are gonna fudge it and see how it goes with guys like White and Ferrel.

If they can beat the Giants and AZ and lose to the Rams, they’d be 7-4 and still in playoff position. Then they have the Browns and the Panthers. At some point SOME of these guys will be back and they can more than likely be 9-4 at the bye.

Go 2-2 over the last 4 (Titans and Bears wins, Sea and Indy losses) and our record is 11-6. Should be good enough given our division record. And maybe we are kinda healthy by then.

Unless Jones gets hurt and Purdy’s toe never heals.

Niners waived OL Drew Moss from the PS to make room for Ferrel. Moss looked like a reasonable prospect similar to Kingston last year. Hopefully Moss gets signed back.

Like you said Chuck the 4 man front is no longer working, and what baffles me is that Kyle and Selah can’t see that, it’s like if the Niners win they turn a blind eye to how the defense worked.

What do you guys know about this player

He looked decent in the preseason, but not having seen him in practice it’s hard to know why he’s not getting more reps.

He’s behind Winters and Robinson on the weak side, so unless they are trying him out as the strong side guy, he’s kinda buried. I don’t think there’s any kind of dog house situation, but who knows? He’s apparently not doing great on special teams. Which is his only way on the field now.
