Pass Rush Musings – Bay of Non-Pigs

Whither the pass rush? With Nick Bosa gone, there’s talk of us trading for guys like Trey Hendrickson for Mac Jones, or even (I don’t) Chase (running backs) Young. Sorry no. We would have to trade the farm for Hendrickson, and then we’d have to try and sign him AND deal with Bosa and his upcoming deal. And we already got a good dose of the Chase Young experience.

I’d much rather go the mid-level route. Saint Curtis Granderson should be a guy that wouldn’t cost and arm and a leg. Cam Jordan of the Saints would also be a solid get. Jaelan Phillips of the Dolphins (sell sell sell!) wouldn’t cost too much either. We don’t need a world-beater at this point. Just someone who can do the job fairly well. They SHOULD do something.

As for the game? I don’t know. I’ve got a bad feeling about this Buccaneers game. They are an explosive offense what with the resurgence of Baker Mayfield. A little bit like the solid job Jones is doing.

They are a bit bacnged up as well, with 3 CBs and a safety all on the questionable list. If we can protect Jones, we need to beat them through the air. They are a great run defense, and we are LAST in rushing average per attempt.

All about the turnovers. We are among the bottom-feeders with our -3. Amazingly, we are on 12 games without an interception, but have caused 5 recovered fumbles. TB is +3 which is a long way from where we are.

Funny thing is, Brock is responsible for 5 of the 8 turnovers in his 2 games. So with him gone we are at +2.

What I just can’t fathom is we are bottom-feeders in turnovers, sacks, red zone efficiency, 1st and goal efficiency, and rushing average. Yet we are 4-1. and we are riddled with injuries.

But we kick ass at getting yards between the 20s. We are the #1 passing attack in the NFL.

Hey! In some good news, Alfred Collins and Jauan Jennings returned to practice.

It was good to see Kendrick Bourne do his best JJ impersonation in that Ram game.

  2. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

One big reason for Mac doing well is his familiarity with KBourne. I do think Lynch is working the market for a DL addition and the obvious targets are the teams in decline.

I can see Saleh looking for help from the NYJ roster above all. Tonges will see his reps evaporate when Kittle returns and I wouldn’t part with Mac or KBourne just in case.

See what comes in the few weeks.

    • Berger's avatar Berger says:

You and I were the only ones wanting to draft Jones when we took Lance. It was because of his poise and ability to find the right read. It also helped that he was as accurate as an QB I had seen in college football. Problem for him was that because he didn’t run, he didn’t get much respect. Everybody was saying it was because of the talent at Alabama. He always looked like a pro to me. Fortunately for us, he had terrible offensive coordinators in his pro football start and ended up here. It is unbelievable how many good QBs get destroyed by bad coaching.

  3. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

NYG lost Nabers and would certainly be in the market for a bonafide WR. Definitely a team that would be in the scope of Lynch to be speaking to about a DL addition.

Another thought, Russ coming back to the NFCW would make some sense if they are serious about dealing Mac.

Guess it would be about who gives us the best return for immediate help on the DL.

Mac Jones isn’t getting traded for a DE no matter who it may be. They signed him for 2 years as insurance against Purdy’s many injuries and that has proven to be the best decision they have made since starting Purdy.

No DE or any other player is as valuable as a good QB and to have one as good as Mac has been is phenomenal. The Niners have an enviable QB situation and one look around the league (Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson) shows just how vital a good back up QB is. He isn’t getting traded this season.

    • Berger's avatar Berger says:

I agree 12th! We might trade him in the off-season. We would need a very high pick, maybe even a first round pick. It would depend on how he continues to play.

      • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

That’s my thought too Berger. I figure after this season they could get a 3rd for him as it stands right now, but another couple of wins and he’s worth a second or possibly even a first rounder.

Again it depends on what happens with Purdy. Turf toe sometimes never resolves so the player just has to manage it during their career. Mac may end up the defacto starter simply by attrition.

On an even basis, both QB’s healthy, Purdy is a superior QB IMO but that’s the rub, he hasn’t been able to stay healthy and all those injuries do mount up.

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

When they saw Darnold’s stock skyrocket after a year with the Niners, they signed Jones to a 2-year deal.

They’ll trade him (or Purdy) next year.

If Purdy is out for till November (as is being opined) I wonder what would happen if Jones ran the table.

At some point they’d have to think Jones would be a possibility to hold on to.

Purdy is certainly more mobile, but Jones looks more durable.

    • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Money isn’t an issue with keeping Jones and Purdy on the roster next year , Jones is a steal at $7m and Purdy is guaranteed to get paid no matter what, so presuming Jones keeps playing well it comes down to this:

Is there more value keeping a starting quality QB as back up to a smaller, injury prone starter or do they entertain player swaps, draft picks etc in a trade?

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

If Jones is killing it like he is, he’s gonna want a starting job.

And we are gonna want to trade him for high picks.

Seriously don’t think he’ll be happy with holding a clipboard like Jimmy GQ.

  6. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Don’t forget we took Kurtis Rourke. He is just what Shanny likes about QB’s and it wouldn’t surprise me if we traded either Purdy, or Jones. If we did my guess it would be for draft picks. It would be a good idea to keep getting younger if possible. My hope is Aiyuk gets healthy so we could trade him for some picks. I think our FO has done a good job the last few years without Peters around.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, forgot about him as he red-shirted this season.

  8. 12's avatar 12 says:

Looks like a real possibility we will see QB Martinez as some point on Sunday, Mac Jones is barely throwing the ball because of an oblique injury.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the Giants rookie RB Skataboo against Fred Warner on Nov 2nd.

Skataboo is electric and has power, speed and limitless energy, let’s see how he does against a future hall of fame LB in Fred Warner. It will be a GPS game for the rookie.

And btw, love seeing the Eagles eat shit on Thursday night.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Trade deadline is 2 days after the NYG game.

I was hoping we would have taken Skattebo as a replacement in waiting for Juice.

I too took pleasure in Philly choking last night.

      • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Juice is running low on juice, looks like he’s not going to see out his full 2 year deal. Father time has caught up.

They are better off running 2 tight end sets or using Tonges as the OW (offensive weapon) Juice used to be. He’s got great hands and has done well as FB when he’s had those snaps.

Tonges is about the same as a running FB blocking, he’s just not good enough for DE lineman blocking.

I think they should keep Purdy, if you are going to trade him the Niners should be looking to dump Bosa also, he has not been the picture of health either. The thing with Jones is he has been playing with a mix of vets and 2nd stringers. With that said it is the defense that kept the Niners in the games they have played. It would be interesting to see Jones with all the WR healthy.

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Pearsall is officially out but I didn’t expect him anyway.

Jennings was limited in practice, so he might be good to go.

  11. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Shanahan says rookie QB Rourke is close to activating his 3 week window, he even said Rourke could probably have gone this week.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

I thought he was done for the year. I doubt he goes out there anytime soon, maybe late Dec. if at all.

      • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Agree Winder, I don’t see Rourke on the field this year unless a catastrophe forces them to do it.

In other news, the 49ers had 3 no name QB’s in for a try out yesterday, which speaks to how dire the QB room is starting to look.

If Mac can’t start on Sunday, which is possible, or he goes out during the game, they only have Martinez available. I think they have to dress an as yet unknown 3rd QB or risk Juice as the 3rd option.

  12. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

So do the Niners go after Trey Hendrickson, he is outstanding but is turning 31 this year. Free agent at the end of the year, do they take him as a rental?

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Depends on the price tag. I seriously doubt they will give away any more #1 picks.

Thing about Hendrickson is he’s missed like 6 games in his career. Unlike Bosa.

If they do go after him, I’d think it would be to keep him and move on from Bosa.

But I really doubt it. Like I’ve been saying, go after a mid-range guy like Gunderson.

  14. Trey Hendrickson's avatar Trey Hendrickson says:

Hendrickson wants nothing to do with the paper tiger Santa Clara Niners. They’re a bunch of wimps. He would much rather be on a team with real men like the Cowboys.
