Forward to the Past

Wow. Well, without Nick Bosa, our defense sure looks like last year’s version of not being able to stop the run or the pass. Our special teams looked like last year’s, giving up a punt return for a touchdown. And the offense looked like last year’s stalling on the goal line twice, shitty run blocking, forcing passes, and turning the ball over 4 times. All this led to a loss to the nearly-as-inept-as-we-were Jacksonville Jaguars. Fuck me.

Both teams have numerous foot injuries from shooting themselves repeatedly in the feet. Our WR corps is wiped out. Our defense got NO pressures on Lawrence. Zero. Game 11 without an interception. 0-4 in the turnover category, and we were still in the game because of a tone of holding calls on Jax, dumb play calls, Lawrence running OB on his own while trying to run the clock out, and a bunch of other things.

And in one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen, the refs gave Jacksonville an extra down when Shanahan (he says) declined a 2nd down holding call on Jax near their goal line. Instead of 3rd and 12, it was 2nd and 16. Despite calling a time out and discussing it with the refs, they said sorry, Jax gets their extra play despite declining it.

The play got 0 yards, but 3rd down and 16 of course they converted. Mainly because there was absolutely no pressure on Lawrence. We didn’t show much in the way of blitzes or anything, and Jax’s O line ran roughshod over our defense to the tune of 151 on the ground.

Purdy looked terrible overthrowing shit and forcing the ball to CMC. 3 turnovers for the future of the franchise as he looked rusty and out of sync. Guess they should have waited till Thursday to give him the green light. I don’t think Mac Jones would have done this badly.

Not sure what to make of this game other than to hope they just all had a bad day. This loss, while not a division or even conference loss, sure make the Thursday night game hugely important.

FYI, the Purdy haters on FB were salivating over the way Purdy played, they all think that the Niners should bench him and start Jones.

1 bad game does not make a season. The Niners have so many injuries. And that is no excuse. It’s real, but the team should be embarrassed by the loss, especially special teams. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when they had to listen to what the coaches said. It looks like they need all new players on special teams. The only guy on special teams that looked good was Pinero.

  3. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

No doubt. But I think Jones plays better than Purdy yesterday. He looked rusty and skittish. He overthrew a lot of guys.

Whatevs. They are what they are. Injured and nearly broken. If CMC goes down, we are completely fucked.

Another season heading down the chute unless we can figure out how to run block and get pressure.

Saleh has his work cut out for him retooling this defense to be effective.

As usual, a couple plays here and there. like the fucking punt return for a TD, and the game ends different.

Still pissed of royally that Shanahan insists on running the ball on 1st and goal every motherfucking time.

    The usual set of plays.

1st down run up the middle for 0-2 yards.
2nd down bubble screen for loss of 3 yards.
3rd down throw-away due to a blitz not picked up.

Give credit to Jax D. They’re tough and flying to the football whereas our DBs always seemed a step late. Purdy was off, timing in general was off and Jax was in the backfield way more than we were. Despite all the penalties they had, Jax ran when they needed to and were constantly getting blown up.

Watched the end of the game again and caught Saleh and Cohen exchanging words but can’t understand where that all started. How/when did signal stealing start?

    If true where was Mac?

Purdy said it felt fine during the game. It was after it started bothering him.

We will see what happens next, but this could very well turn into a shit scenario for Purdy unless he stops forcing balls into bad spots.

4 picks in 2 games is not a good look.

The Niners looked like hot garbage yesterday. Purdy is an overrated joke. These clowns will miss the playoffs. And the Rams will annihilate them on Thursday.

  7. Berger's avatar Berger says:

If Purdy’s toe is bothering him during the week, they should start Jones. These toe injuries are no joke. It is what caused Jack Lambert to retire.

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Great time for a short week as Pearsall and Jennings are nursing injuries, and Purdy reported toe soreness this morning.

As far as the pas rush goes, Saleh needs to figure some shit out.

2 plays really tipped the scales. The 48 yard TD run by Etienne and the fucking 87 yard punt return. Just kick EVERYTHING out of fucking bounds on punts.

    Jesus Christ. Stupid fucking shit.

It was a battle of who wanted to give it away the most.

    We did.

And let’s not forget how few turnover stats we have vs Jax.

That’s the infuriating part. All that and we still had a shot to win in the end.

    Till turnover 4.

I’d really like to know if Armstead knew anything related to the Saleh signal stealing fiasco with Cohen.

Yes, we played a sloppy game in all phases but, I haven’t heard signal stealing talk since Belichick was accused of doing it against the NYJ years ago. Wacky shit.

  12. Winder's avatar Winder says:

I waited to write anything about the game until now. It looks to me that a series of bad decisions (mostly coaching) were in play. I had thought we got a ST’s guru but that certainly isn’t the case. Purdy looked anything but ready and I don’t know what Saleh was doing. it kinda looked like the whole organization over looked Jax. Chuck it did seem like a deja vu of last year, this team might actually be jinxed

Liked what I saw over the weekend from the Oregon Ducks overall.

TE Sadiq was a blocking machine and their C was a beast. I think they’re both Jr’s as well.

    Quarterback pressures allowed:

LT Trent Williams — one hit, three hurries

LG Connor Colby — five hurries

C Jake Brendel — one hurry

RG Dominick Puni — two hurries

RT Colton McKivitz — two hurries

RB Christian McCaffrey — one hit

TE Jake Tonges — one hurry

It is clear that without George Kittle on the field, the 49ers are having a difficult time getting the run game going. McCaffrey managed just 49 yards on 17 carries, with 48 of those yards coming after contact. The All-Pro running back only gained 0.06 yards before contact, frequently getting hit immediately when the ball touched his hands.

The 49ers have been unable to average four-plus yards per carry in any game this season.

Shanny seems unable to mix things up much and is way to predictable, same as it ever was.

I did like the shovel pass to CMc and the lateral pass play with Rickey and CMc.

      Other than that?

His sequencing and tempo could use some variations. Jumbo packages and no huddle maybe?

  18. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Watched the PSU/Oregon Ducks over the weekend and came away impressed with the Duck’s OL. They dominated and beat up the PSU DL. We don’t seem to dominate at all.

Our DL can’t penetrate and our OL gets pushed around. Trent is starting to show his age as well.
