Road Warriors

This ‘easy’ sched sure isn’t looking easy. But still and all, these were two very strong games played by the defense. Games that last year surely would have been losses given how soft the defense played these last 2 seasons.

And it really isn’t anything spectacular that Robert Saleh is doing. It is mainly by identifying and attacking the opponent in crucial situations. 4th and 2 late, and we brought the house. It caused a strip-sack-fumble-loss-of down that ended the Saints challenge to take the lead.

The Seattle game was even better. 2nd and 5 from the 9 as the Seahawks were poised to take the lead late, we brought pressure and Nick Bosa forced the strip-sack-game sealer.

These scenarios all came up last year. And more often than not the Niners failed. One thing about Saleh is he does very well at making in-game adjustments. Norlins did well early running, so Saleh changed the fronts and slowed down their run game. But where the defense shined was keeping Rattler in check. For the most part. Color me impressed by the game he played. Rattler hit a lot of passes in very small windows, and hit on 3 TDs, and the coverage was fairly solid. But the Saints only got 207 in the air as most of the throws were check-downs.

Also have to say, Seattle looks like they will be on our heels all year. Their team is no slouch on either side of the ball, and they pretty handily took care of Pittsburgh in their house.

Yeah I commented on the last thread, the Niners never or almost never blitzed. And when they did blitz it was picked up by the other team. I was not a Jones fan but after yesterday I became one, but it is only one game. 3 games would be the minimum IMO to get a good read on Jones. But if he plays that well, give Purdy time to heal, I don’t want to see him brought back too early and have it a reoccurring proglem

Joe Burrow out 3 months with toe surgery. Jaylen Daniels day to day with a knee injury. McCarthy out 4 weeks with a high ankle sprain. Man, the NFL is just a fucking laundry list of injuries.

Sure seems to me that since they shortened the practices and cut down the number of preseason games, injuries are going up.

Where’s Joe the Toe Groza when you need him?

On Bosa’s strip sack vs Seattle, it was Mykell Williams pushing a double team back. It was actually more like triple team. Bosa was singled and bull rushed his blocker into the QB. I can now see why Williams was compared to Armstead. He pushes people backwards. Difference is MW is more of a playmaker.

Pretty special to be this good this soon.

I keep thinking this D will get better and better as the season goes on.

Winters is looking like Dre Jr.

This is the 5 worst offensive grades according to PFF

Jake Tonges, TE, 47.4, 56 snaps

Brayden Willis, TE, 54.7, 6 snaps

    Marquez Valdes-Scantling, WR, 56.0, 9 snaps

Mac Jones, QB, 58.6, 71 snaps

Kyle Juszczyk, FB, 58.7, 10 snaps

No way does the Jones grade make sense to me.

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Right, Esp when Rattler gets 75 for 207 yards? 6.1 yards/attempt.

    And Jones gets 58 for 279? 7.2 Y/att.

Do they base it on feelings?

Jesus. This is nuts. String theory is easier than this convoluted noise.

Queue the Ram/Chargers SB. The reason I wrote that is because the media will surely start floating that idea about. No one would have to travel and every game would be a home game.

With all the injuries to QB’s so far the one I expected to happen would have been to Stafford and still expect that one to happen.

Purdy seems a little fragile to me and I don’t think he will make it through the year. Hopefully we can keep Saleh next year because I think this year is more of building block to next year.

  9. Berger's avatar Berger says:

My biggest fear of Mac Jones starting was how he will handle our leaky O-line and make plays under pressure. Purdy is usually running from it. Jones handled it well this week. I think Conner Colby started a bit rough but seemed to get better as the game went on. He actually looked good in the 4th quarter. It seems our O-line is our weak link. They and Jones stepped that up vs a weak NO team.

NO may be a bit of a mess but their D line is pretty solid. Need -to see what AZ is up to regarding their pressures.

Dont think this is behind a pay wall, but apparently Purdy has a pretty good chance of starting next week.
