Wait Till the Year After Next ! ! !

That’s the battle cry now. I guess the days of Kittle Bosa, Williams, and CMC being a part of the playoff picture is now a gone deal. I get that they had to cut payroll after spending a fortune last year, entrusting the defense to a green unprepared minion, and not canning the special teams coach after week 4 was just stupidity in in-action, but it looks like Elon Musk is running (ruining) this team now.

You can even give Collins a thought though. He got a lot of pressure up the middle, but the interior run defense was atrocious. Ward was on his way out due to his tragedy, Juice got the squeeze, Hargrave was a nothing-burger, Deebo got the heave-ho, so they took a lot of money off the books. So, they could have kept at a minimum Banks and Greenlaw. Fuck the risk with Dre. His 1.5 quarters on the field made the 49ers look like contenders.

Without them we are fucked. Yay! We have 20 picks in the next 2 drafts! The Rams and Seahawks have more than likely passed us in the talent level, and we look to be in rebuild mode amd battling for the cellar with the Cards.

I guess if they nail this draft, they can rebuild the O line, the D line, the thin LB corps, and the thin CB position. But hey we’ll draft a TW and WR in the 1st and 2nd rounds. I have little to no faith that we are gonna improve much over last year. And that was WITH a lot more talent.

Huzzah!

I didn’t like we got rid of Greenlaw but maybe he wanted to leave like Deebo who looked like a shell of his old-self or maybe the FO knew more about his injuries than we did. I agree though I doubt we sniff .500 this year no matter how we draft. Throughout the decades we have seen this shit many times.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

I’ve read that we offered Dre a 1yr prove it deal but couldn’t come close to the Denver offer. I can’t argue with that approach. Once serious injury comes into play, it’s a risky gamble to take IMO. BA is the deal that fukd is in hindsight.

      • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Agree NJ, Greenlaw was too big a risk for the money for the 9ers.

Having said that, I hope he kicks ass in Denver. He deserves his time in the spotlight after always being in Fred’s shadow.

As for BA, that diva BS he pulled last year still leaves a bad taste for me. I just don’t see how the 9ers can trade him because of his injury, they would get a cup of coffee and a donut for him.

BA damaged his brand badly with his antics and shitty play last year.

He needs to have a bounce back year big time or he slides into irrelevancy quickly. No second bag baby.

They overpaid him but crying over spilt milk doesn’t help now.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

NJ- Mac isn’t pressuring anything the league already knows what he can do and it isn’t much. Purdy even with his faults has the “it” thing that good QB’s have and gives you a feeling that we are in every game he plays. He’s well worth giving him the going rate. The FO can’t be that stupid.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

I’m thinking in terms of the inclement weather games and deep ball accuracy Winder. Yes, he’s an asset on face value IMO. Mac might simply be an insurance signing, to push the pending deal forward, simply to avoid a prolonged stalemate which has dogged us the past feraw years.

Many of us were stunned when Lance was taken instead of Mac. Perhaps Shanny has been given a do-over to get it right.

Darnold benefitted quite a bit from his year in the system. Hoping Mac will too.

Might just allow them to FTAG Purdy and stall the monster contract for another year?

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

the weather games are definitely a warning sign and hopefully it gets fixed because it just has to. But to think Mac will do any better with the line we are probably going to have is wishful thinking imo.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, it is a bit of a push to get Purdy possibly a little off his high number I guess. But Jones is more of a ‘fix-and-trade’ type deal.

Funny that they say they aren’t gonna do what they did with Deebo, Aiyuk, Williams, and Bosa, and this is exactly what they ARE doing.

        Derp.

    • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

If Purdy wants too much would a trade for Titans Will Levis be considered. Last year they had a bad oline and average WRs.

Two 2nd’s, 2025 and 2026? 60 mil is about 1/4 of team salary cap

  2. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

His demands are more than likely $50 mill +. Not unreasonable when you see who is getting paid what.

But, according to most holdouts, it’s about the guaranteed money.

    Purdy isn’t going anywhere.

Mac Jones starting here would close the gaping hole of ineptitude in that 2021 draft fuckarow.

Should it come to that, this team should move to Fresno.

  3. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

If that means we don’t draft a TE on the 1st day I’m for it.

  4. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Looks like Juice found out his market value was less than he hoped and given the choice of similar deals he chose to sign with the Niners, good for both sides.

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, he’s the consummate team player. Glad he’s back.

The Niners were kinda heartless, but hey this is a business. As in what John Matuzak’s character says in North Dallas Forty:

“Every time I call it a game, you call it a business. And every time I call it a business, you call it a game.”

  6. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

QB coach Lombardi was the WR coach with McDaniels when the Pats drafted Mac Jones so he has familiarity with him.

I do think its a good signing, certainly Jones has had his problems but also his bright spots. The 9ers might be able to rehab him like they did with Sam Darnold (3 years, $100m with the Seahawks).

Its also at least a Purdy alternative if the shit hits the fan. I don’t know anything about 3rd string Mordecai really. Wouldn’t be my first choice but he does have 40 games experience, similar to Purdy.

If Purdy holds out in TC we will see what Jones can do.

  7. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Juice was offered more cash by Steelers but his strong ties with Kittle and the Claire/Kristen bond is why he only wanted to be a Niner. Glad The Niners wised up He’s just a great locker room presence and knows the system so well, just feel confident when he’s on the field..

  8. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Damm impressive list to be included with for Juice…

Most Pro Bowl appearance by a RB alltime

    10 Barry Sanders

    9 Jim Brown

    9 Walter Payton

    9 Franco Harris

9 Kyle Juice tied for second alltime, yeah I know the Fullback position kinda has its own category selection but Kyle just dominated it..

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

It means we are gonna suck for 2 years. Unless we nail this draft.

  10. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Mason described as less than a threat in passing game. Guerrendo a former receiver.

    https://www.nbcsportsbayarea.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/jordan-mason-2025-draft-christian-mccaffrey/1835393/

  11. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Guerendo is much faster, younger, much better receiver than Mason also, and a cheaper contract which the penny saving Niners want..

There get another RB in a heavy RB class like a Skattebo,Tuten, maybe Kaleb Brown if he slides but they have to hit both sides of the line heavy first..

    Nice article from webzone

  13. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

    I buy the logic Winder.

He was missing weapons a plenty.

What concerns me is the deep ball, and the inclement weather games.

Have to wonder if the elbow injury contributed to that? Fine to see what the Draft brings his way of course but, Oline additions won’t contribute immediately, especially OT.

Defensive additions can be brought along in rotation packages.

Oline rarely subs the down 5.

Let’s hope they can structure something that he can live with that doesn’t involve a holdout. Too much downside as we’ve seen in recent years.

  14. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Like Marshall ruining Joe’s elbow, I think it was Dwelly that whiffed on Reddick in Philly that might have done enough damage to be concerned about what could be a loss of abilities to grip and control.

Like a pitcher post Tommy John repair, they’re never the same.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

I would think the FO would know things about that. We would have won many more games if our defense played better they truly sucked last year. As you can tell I am in Purdy’s camp and I hope he goes at around 55mil.

  15. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

I’m not a big fan of the Jordan Mason trade. They don’t know what CMC will look like coming back and Guerendo is similar to CMC skills wise, but Mason was Marshawn Lynch for the 9ers.

Yes he got hurt but all 49er RB get hurt. I believe it’s how they (over)use them instead of rotating. Essentially, when the players are all available, the Niners have been a running team with play action coming off of that and it’s been very successful.

Mason was a very effective runner, I don’t see why they traded him for roughly laundry lint instead of doing a thunder and lightning type RB rotation.

Good players are hard to find as Lynch is fond of saying, well Mason absolutely fits that, so why trade him for what amounts to marginal draft gains? Mason was leading the league in yards until his injury.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Agreed 12th. Shanny simply wears the RB position out needlessly.

When we need to sit on a lead late the guys are gassed. He got CMc back and rode him into the ground.

All they accomplished with Mason was to open a slot for another Draft pick at the position with questions surrounding CMc.

Starting to think Shanny is incapable of changing it up. Anal retentive.

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

He just might be we didn’t fool anyone last year. Shanny has to do a better job of mixing things up

I also liked Mason but he was another player move due to his salary. They saved over 5 mil against the cap . It wouldn’t surprise me they snag someone off a practice squad .While drafting one. We also usually pick one or two from the UDFA pool.

  16. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Hundred of pitchers have thrived after the TJ Surgery. Giant pitcher Justin Verlander being one of them. SHe won a Cy Young award at 39 after his surgery. So, that doesn’t worry me.

And that article is what I’ve been saying all along. Brock wasn’t spectacular, but his mistakes were magnified by a shitty defense, mediocre pass protection, and a completely inept special teams unit.

He’s gonna get paid, so get it done.

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

As far as Mason goes, I like the guy, but it isn’t a major loss. They can (gulp) draft someone to replace him. Hopefully in the 6th round. Guerendo is fine, and he’s a better guy out of the backfield. His blocking? Not sure.

I hate the way Shanahan uses his RBs anyway, so maybe he can learn a lesson as well?

    • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

I’m less certain they can draft a RB capable of leading the league in yards Chuck.

I get its been a popular notion that Shanahan can turn an average RB into a world beater but just look at his draft history with the RB position, its hardly a sure thing, which IS what he already had with Mason.

They put a 2nd round tender on him at $5 mil because that was his value to the team, then traded him for peanuts. Headshaker to me.

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

If I knew what their plans were, I’d be the GM. I don’t get many many things these guys are doing.

Whatever their run blocking scheme is, they do a good job of it. Like I said though, Shanny doesn’tunderstand the need to rotate his RBs instead of running them till the break.

  19. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Anybody have any thoughts on adding Giants F/A LB/Edge Rusher Azzez Ojulari ? Could make a nice complimentary piece for Warner..

He’s a pretty solid player, sacks,QB pressure etc.Just injuries concerns like a lot of players(meh)..1 year 11M? prove it with an option?

  20. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Here’s something I missed at the time, Deebo came off the field hot about a missed FG by Moody, but the guy he went after was Peppers the long snapper, now both of them are gone. Makes me wonder what Peppers was doing wrong to aggravate Deebo and also get cut?

  21. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

FWIW Alex Mack is 6’4″ 315 lbs with 33″ arm length. Both Brendel and Bradbury 31 5/8 and 300 or so lbs

Hope there is not an early run on OT which is a weak class. Also C is weak. Burford around 300 lbs also. Last year should have gotten in front of Ravens for Rosengarten.

  22. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

I’m gonna go out on a limb and predict a pick for long snapper. Not even sure if he’s in the Draft class?

  23. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Niners sign former Dolphins DB Siriani Neal for 2 years..Doesn’t move the needle much but it’s more of another Brant Boyer Special Teams player upgrade as he’s been on 2,074 ST plays in 7 years..As bad as their ST sucks this guy could only help..

  24. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Good article in the Chronicle about the Niners and drafting late round RB. My neighbor has a subscription to the Chronicle and he gives it to me when he is done. Evidently a coach Bobby Turner who has been with the Shannahans since Mike was a HC, he goes through and evaluates RBs and picks out ones who fit the Shannahans schemes. I would say so far he has done a good job of bringing in 4th,5th, 6th round picks our drafted players.

  25. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Still baffles me why the Niners wouldn’t take a flier on Azzez Ojuari? Shit he signs a 1/4M with Eagles and the Niners looking for a cheap signings like that for a Defensive upgrade made no sense..
Very frustrating off-season with a F grade as York put his foot down dumping players for money relief..

  26. Brrrrrrrrock Purdy's avatar Brrrrrrrrock Purdy says:

This blog needs to draft itself a YouTube subscription for non stop classic rock videos! The Niners are probably going for a rebuild and Shanahan is one season away from being canned…but let’s rock out, dudes!

  27. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

BA has a big payment guarantee vesting on April 1st. If the 9ers really are thinking of trading him it needs to be before then as it makes zero sense after April 1.

Two obvious problems are his serious injury with an unknown recovery time (mid season?) and a large contract to be assumed by the new team.

So what would the 9ers get other than cash? I would guess he’s worth a 5th rounder.

I guessed a 4th for Deebo which turned out to be optimistic.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

That’s more than likely what they will do pick OL’s in the mid/later rds. Unless one or two of the projected tackles make it to 11. They need to plan on Williams replacement now. I still feel we go defense hard and heavy in the lower rds. But, you know we are gonna get some rb’s and wr’s somewhere.

  28. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Best scenario for the Niners is if 3QB’s get drafted before their pick and it could happen with Jaxon Dart shooting up the draft boards leading to better options on the OL/DL first pick..

By comparison, he’s smaller than Emmanwori.

  31. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Stat-wise, Emmanwori outperforms him as well.

Obviously the question remains, how high would they be willing to invest? Bassa would be cheaper but not likely to contribute right away.

Starting to think a trade down would make sense if they miss elsewhere.

    https://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/4869523/nick-emmanwori

  32. Winder's avatar Winder says:

I can see us trading back from 11 if their mark isn’t there. The way things are going that just might make some sense. This is the time of year where most of what we read is just smoke.

  33. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

As good a player Emmanmori might be the Niners DB/Safety’s are more the strength of the team with Lenior,Green,Mustapha,Brown etc .Just think it would be a reach at 11 for him.
Definitely rather get OT Membou, are Campbell if available,Jalon Walker LB/Edge are Graham if he slides to us..Bassa is more of a 3rdRd pick but I like his enthusiasm and leadership quality’s.Think the Niners are high on Dee Winters too at LB as he improved a lot down the stretch..
Pound both lines HARD,add a Center Zabel?Jared Wilson?

  34. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

David Lombardi says Purdy’s contract will be between $58m and $68m per year. His basis for this is the league wise average of the percentage of salary cap paid to the QB.

Lombardi uses his spreadsheet analysis of situations as the backbone of his opinions. He did a recent video bit with Greg Papa where Papa disagrees with his take.

Papa argues against doing too much with the Purdy contract based on Purdy’s decision making last year where Purdy made some notable mistakes and did regress.

I’m in the Greg Papa camp. If the 9ers pay “market rate” whatever that currently is for Purdy I think the signing will come back to haunt the team for the foreseeable future as it means an overpayment for Purdy as a QB.

Purdy is probably a top 10 QB because he is in the Shanahan system which suits his skillset perfectly. Good for the 9ers, less valuable for other teams.

I’m a big fan of Purdy, but still a realist.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

That’s been my take as well. $50M/yr was my prediction going in. Might just force the FTAG while they see what comes from Mac? Can’t see going into Dak range money simply because the market says it should.

      • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Last I heard the QB FTAG was under $45M.

Can’t see them going toward $60M since he has some questions around bad weather performance and deep ball accuracy.

  35. Berger's avatar Berger says:

You never know until they put on the pads and play, but Kenneth Grant is being compared to Vince Wilfork. If he is anywhere close, he should be our guy. I do know he can plug up double teams and pass rush some. Having somebody like that can move a team to play the 3-4. Even if a team plays a 4-3, you need somebody who can play the 0 to 1 gap. Grant seems like the perfect pick for what we need.

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Grant is another guy I could live with in a trade down scenario. Don’t think he’s worth a pick at 11 but I like his ability to clog up the middle and stuff the run.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Wilfork was a big reason NE won so many games. But you don’t find players like that very often even if they are the same size.

  36. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

As April 1st approaches, the ticking time bomb is ready to go off. 12th, that article is what I’ve been saying since last year.

The 49ers CANNOT reset the QB market value. They can only go by what is out there. His number should be somewhere around $53-$55 mill. Unless choir-boy is getting greedy.

Thing is, we are already on the edge of being irrelevant. If they trade Purdy, we are in the shitter for the next 5 seasons as, who the hell is gonna be the QB? Josh Johnson? Mark Sanchez? Everyone is signed and Rodgers is a fucking disaster. Might as well try to get Alex Smith to unretire.

If they trade Purdy, it’ll be a cold day in hell before I give this team a second thought.

They are in NO position to play hardball with Purdy.

They can do whatever they want with deferred money, signing bonus, guaranteed green, whatever. But their only choice is to sign him. Or they have written off the next 5 years.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

We can tag him for the next two years but that should only be a last resort. I am hoping he decides at 55 its a nice number.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

It might not be the Niners fault this has gone on so long. Could very well be the agent. But our track record says it probably is on us.

  37. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Hah! Yeah, Winder. That’s my baseline. I just wrote a new thread and my guess is 4/$225.

Which works out to $56.5 per.

The QB tag is only $40 mill. Fuck it. DO IT!

If Mr. Goody-Two-Shoes is gonna all of a sudden go hipster-doofus gansta, pin the tag on the Purdy.

    New thread is up.
