Not that I really dug Philly winning, but it sure was fun seeing the Fat Walrus blubbering on the sidelines at Mahomes was pressured into mistake after sack all game. Mahomes never got going until garbage time, and Philly just coasted on their defense and took advantage of the early KC turnovers.
I thought it was odd that KC didn’t even bother trying to run, and Philly stressed the run too much to not very much success. The difference maker, Saquon Barkley, made most of his impact catching swing passes and the one wheel route for a nice gain.
But this game was dominated by the Philly D line. In Nick Sorensen’s wet dream, Philly didn’t blitz until it was garbage time in the 4th quarter. Philly’s base pass rush got into Mahomes just about every pass play, and KC didn’t cross the 50 until 5 minutes were left in the 3rd quarter. Telling to me was the fact that Philly’s interior line rarely gave up their gaps, and Mahomes had no room to step up and throw, or scramble for yards.
Say what you want about Philly, but they remade their defense last offseason and it paid off in spades. Hiring Fangio turned out pretty well, too. Zack Baun went from a special teams guy to an All-Pro linebacker under Fangio. They drafted very well as well with Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell manning the slot and outside CBspots next to Darius Slay.
This gives me some hope that Saleh and heir-apparent DC Gus Bradley can turn out D around our defense this year.
Brandon (what? Me worry?) Staley is for all intents and purposes gone as our, uh, coach of, uh, clipboards? Something or other. He could possibly be hired as the New Orleans Saints DC.
Adios, Brandon. We hardly knew ye, and still have no idea what you did as assistant to the assistant to the defensive coordinator’s assistant.
Kawakami says Staley worked with the DB’s and credited him with their improvement.
KCs Oline was eaten alive by Philly.
We need help with youth and muscle on both lines. Getting pressure with 4 makes all the difference when you can plug the run on the way, which we failed at miserably.
Not sure what Lynch has as the priority at 11 but I’d like to see an edge guy over a DT at this point. Wouldn’t have a problem either way but I think a solid OT could be had in RD2?
Not sure I’d look past Saleh to Gus just yet. Might have hit his ceiling?
Bradley spent one season with the Las Vegas Raiders and ranked 26th in points allowed per game. Bradley has since spent the last three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, who have ranked 28th, 28th, and 24th in points allowed per game.

Always liked Devonta Smith, cool to see him do so well on big stage. Gotta wonder how the Chiefs ‘splain this one and where they go from here.
KC dodged bullets all season. They could have had as bad a record as the Niners but for a few plays and a few penalties.
They had a weird ass season that just ended real bad for them. Every game came down to the wire and they managed to pull most of them out.
and KC has a lot of problems like us. A ton of free agents and an expensive roster.
Did you see Eric Branch column in Chron about Philly comps with Niners? Take was SF might not be that far away if they can strengthen both lines as Eagles have done through draft. Thoughts?
Totally agree willedav. Many of us have.
Trenches are the name of the game.
Protect the QB
Sack the QB.
We didn’t do anything close in either regard.

Per Scott Ostler of the Chronicle, “if Sunday was a learning lesson for the 49ers, here is what they should have learned, BEEF UP THE O-line. Don’t think your okaybeacause Trent Williams will “Probably” be back. The 49ers first pick should be a ready to rip offensive lineman, it’s about protection.
And then there is EricBranch of the Chron, BEEF UP the Front D line
Trenches Trenches Trenches!!!!!
Might not be the sexy picks but it’s exactly what the team needs!!!What Eagles showed against the Chiefs proved that, DL/OL make it so!!
Well, hell. We’ve only been on the Niners for that for about 5 seasons now.
Get with it, front office!
The old addage of defense wins championships was again proven to be, the Eagles D was just dominant.
In the draft and/or free agency DT is what I think the team needs most of all, a dual purpose run stuffer and crash the pocket type, hard to come by I know but Buckner was exactly that.
That doesn’t necessarily mean use the 1st pick since the DT position is deep this draft, I just think that is the position they need most of all.
There second biggest need is a true starting center. The rest of the line is adequate with upgrades already on the roster. Contrary to popular belief RT was not a weakness last season, not to say great but adequate. C, LT and LG were below par.
After that in no particular order, a DE, CB, S, ILB, TE/FB, RB, WR and QB.
I’m not sure I’d even go adequate, 12th
McKivitz graded out very poorly.
37th overall
43th in pass pro
46th in run blocking

The Athletic put out the 100 top players for this years draft. I tried to copy and paste but that was a no-go. Interesting list they has the 1st QB to go at the 15 spot so I guess they don’t think very much of them. But lots of linemen for both lines early.
I should say they ranked Wade at #15 and the Colorado qb at 25.
Some QB needy team will overreach and take one I’d guess.
What Philly showed was the ability to rush 4 and dominate. An understudy to Trent might be had beyond 11 and I would look for a DE / DT at 11.
Problem is, Lynch has whiffed too often at that position but for Bosa.
If Deebo were to net Garrett somehow I’d be amazed so, it’s likely to fall on the 11 pick to add some trench improvement.
Yeah NJ Lynch’s track record of early picks leave a lot to be desired. We need a pass blocking tackle and some road greading guards but it still wouldn’t surprise me if we take a TE with the first pick. At this point who knows what we will do. I guess sit back and see what FA brings us.
I wouldn’t mind getting our hands on Tyler Warren from PSU if he were there at 11 Winder. He’s a great weapon and could be a great replacement for Juice. Great hands and likely rated as the best TE option in this class.
Gotta hand it to Eagles scouting department and GM Howie Roseman? They usually draft low but hits gold every year.Drafting CB’s back to back with Mitchell &DeJean was brilliant knowing that was a weakness the year before, now their set for years with those two 22 year olds.
Still I’m happy with are guys in Lenior&Green who are very underrated and should turn into All-Pros in the future imo..
Walterfootball has Cam Ward going #1 to the Titans and Shauder Sanders going at #2 to the Browns. Walterfootball.com is pretty good.
I look a those now and then. The Athletic guys are just sports writers but for most part they are good ones. They don’t rate for need just the top players.
I get real leery of drafting BPA. We have specific needs to address. And we did last year
As much as I lik our last draft, I still scratch my head on the Pearsall pick.
I feel the same way if you need an OL you draft him instead of a linebacker if you know it should be a lock. Gambling with an upside. I really don’t know why we draft so shiitty in the low rounds.
No way the Browns are taking Sanders at 2 not if Prime gets his say.Sanders is going to the Raiders at #6 and the Browns are taking the best player in the draft Abdul Carter who will replace Myles Garrett as the franchise player moving forward..
He’s gonna pull an Elway?
Sanders is calling bullshit on ESPN saying he would be available at 6. I don’t think he gives a shit where he goes, just that he goes high.
some of that game looks pretty weak until you realize the players don’t have face masks. I love the way defenses piled up on the Qb’s
Based on Championship games Graham was the greatest QB. 10 Championship games in 10 seasons, winning 7 of them.
Browns throwing screen passes even then.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, just goes to show Teams on the east coast were using the west coast offense before the west coast did.
