I think the Shanahan era is about to come crashing down to an ignominious end. This team has yet again tripped, fell, penalized, and schemed themselves to another disheartening loss in a season filled with disheartening losses.
No idea what is going in inside the building, but Shanny cannot be looking very good to his players right now. My mantra all year of doing something about the plain-ass vanilla defense came to an obvious head with the Nick Bosa injury. Without him what was our adjustment? What was our move to generate pressure?
Nothing.
And herein lies the rub. This defense relies on EVERYONE played perfectly and hold their coverages for 5 seconds, covering the backs/TEs with our short zone, and getting pressure from our base 4 man rush. Something we never seem to deviate from. We rarely stunt, we even more rarely blitz, we don’t show 5 man fronts, no pre-snap movement, and we simply do the same thing every play regardless of down and distance or situation.
Our studly defense full of pro-bowlers is 25th in 3rd down conversion stoppage at 43.41% this season.
This is how you give up games.
Same with the offense. Without Kittle and Aiyuk, only Jennings seemed to be getting open. Deebo is a ghost, Pearsall was overwhelmed I guess, whoever the backup TE was made no impact, and CMC was not spelled at all but for the first TD drive where Mason ran for 16 yards on 2 carries. Gee. Why not show a DIFFERENT FUCKING LOOK NOW AND THEN with Mason running the ball? Give teams a different look?
Yeah, we are injured. So is Kansas City. But they’ve played through it pretty well. We on the other hand can’t do anything unless every player is in top form and hitting all their marks. Shanahan is an abject failure in the red zone now. Even with CMC back. We had ONE nice misdirection play with Jennings on the goal line.
Yeah, we need Kittle back. And we desperately need Bosa back. But what this team needs is a fundamental change in offensive and defensive philosophy. I have been beside myself in anger at the awful defensive scheme this team runs, and it has gotten us here. The bottom tier of the NFL.
If Shanahan wants to stick around next year, he needs to throw his DC and his ST coach under the bus NOW. Or he will be tossed at the end of the year as well.
The NFL has caught up to Shanahan and he has not made the correct adjustments. We have had a 4th quarter lead and possession of the ball in 9 of our 10 games. We have lost 5 of them.
This is beyond the pale in sucking. We are looking at 5-7 with the Green Bay/Buffalo road games coming up. Yeah, we own GB but I’m sure they are hell-bent on smacking the shit out of us. Buffalo? No prayer.
Back up TE Saubert can’t block for shit. OT Moore saw a play or 2 as I recall but Seattle came to stop the run and successfully did so.
Work the edges maybe with Pearsall? Kid doesn’t have a clue how to block downfield and was practically invisible, as was Deebo who can’t separate. Lose Kittle and Bosa and we’re inept.
Shanny appears to have lost his offense in terms of urgency. Purdy running too much because key weapons are being smothered. All of this Sorensen keeping plays in front allows what happened with Geno having 20yds of free turf to navigate in the end.
As I see it Detroit is the team to beat in the NFC. We’re a clown show.
All I can say right now is we better draft really good. I actually think the first draft without Peters was a pretty good one. Hopefully Bosa isn’t toast but I’m not holding my breath. years ago I used to have to leave the room if the Niners played sloppy ball now I just expect it.
I’ve gotten numb to it also Winder. Shanny has gone from losing SBs to losing the 2nd half.
Appears as though the team is becoming complacent. Got no time for heartless efforts.
Gotta figure Fat Mike will be unemployed after the season in Dallas. Belichick is still available too. Can’t see Jerruh handing control to Bill either. If Jed can’t see what many of already see would Bill be an option for us? Maybe Vrabel? I think we’re heading for a reset at this point.
Wouldn’t ignore giving a shot to Brian Flores either.
I’m not in with old school Coaches Belichick are Vabrel but I would be ALL IN with Lions OC Ben Johnson who will be the hottest coach on the market this off-season.He runs the best offense in football, with 2 great RB’s Gibbs&Monty,WRAmon StJohn,Williams,TE LaPorta etc..
Why couldn’t he make it work here?He could go with CMC&Mason in the backfield keeping both fresh.Still an assortment of WR’s BA,Deebo,Jennings,Pearsall,Cowing and TE Kittle.. Think he would be intrigued with this job in the off-season and revamping this coaching staff to suit his style..
No argument from me AK. Kinda thinking Dallas would be in line for him but he’s going to get plenty of opportunities.
The problem with this team is we no longer have a dominant D-Line. Our O-line has never been dominant, but Shanny has done a nice job scheming around that. This team also keeps shooting themselves in the foot. We’ve had so many plays called back that whenever we have a good play, I look for a flag.
We need to draft the best offense or defensive tackle in the first round in 2025. Our defensive tackles are average. We’ve had dominant DTs for 6 years. Now we are seeing the difference it makes. We do need to blitz more often. I am getting a bit fed up with Sorensen’s vanilla defense. When you don’t have a dominant D-line, you have to scheme pressure.
Shanahan is doing as well as one could expect without the strong trenches and injuries. This isn’t our year. IMO, getting rid of him would be a major mistake. All we did before he got here was lose.
I agree with a lot of what you are saying but obviously our window of opportunity is shut for this year. Since we have our QB of the future already we may need to trade or dump some of our high salary guys like deebo and Ward. Go after the best DL’s and OL’s in FA and draft the best of those in the low rds in our drafts since it usually takes a little while for them to adjust to the pro game. I also feel Shanny has gone stale since a lot of teams now run basically the same offense. I think it’s time he may have to go and if he does I hope we keep Lynch and the drafting side of the FO in tack.
Welcome back, Bergs.
Thank you, I missed you yahoos!
All Shanahan has done since he got here is blow leads. Well, since before he got here.
If this team doesn’t make the playoffs, and given the schedule, it looks like a hard road, I think they will make drastic changes to the coaching staff. Whether that includes Shanny, we’ll see. But really, this team is LOADED with talent that is going to waste.
As is patently obvious, this team’s window is closing, not opening.
They should have at least canned the ST coach one month into the season.
Now, they should jettison Sorensen.
If they want to try and salvage this season. This waiting around shit is only gonna make the call for Shanny’s head louder as this team trips over its collective dick down the stretch.
The pre-snap penalties are simply just a symptom of a team that isn’t coached up very well. The holds? Well, that just shows we have a bad O line. A sign that this front office thinks they can just sign warm bodies to play on the line and they’ll do great things.
Drafting WRs and RBs while ignoring the O line is just a total mind-fuck to me. Yeah, we got Puni, but McKivitz continues to be one of the weakest pass protecting RTs in the league.
Shanahan simply refuses to use Mason as a different look/rest for CMC/change of pace RB, let alone Guerendo. You know, the guy he fucking DRAFTED.
Cowing is what, a 4.25 guy? We can’t use him on a go route now and then?
The decisions made by Shanahan on a regular basis are absolutely dumbfounding.
Yes, this team is loaded with talent, but games are won in the trenches. We can beat anybody but we can’t be consistent. We used to be good at the 4-minute drill, not his year. We need an upgrade at C, LG and RT and defensive tackle. Our defensive line has switched out to 1 gappers. We need statless 2 gappers. Startless is tongue and cheek, but my point is we need to be able to stuff he run better. We’ve got pass rushing ends.
BTW, Leanard Floyd was gassed on the final drive. He could’ve made a big stop, instead he looked like he had no will to win.
Floyd has been pretty much a big fat nothingburger.
Excellent (and extremely long) analysis. You shouldn’t worry so much. Shanahan will have no issues with finding a new scapegoat.
Like they say, there are no stupid questions, just stupid people asking them.
What do you got?
Chuck this talks about the Niners lack of blitz’s
https://apple.news/AID5erBCITr6VmCPiDmHtlQ
One of Kyles problems is he is a clock manager, he does not play to win, if you would forget about the clock and just call plays this team would/should score more than 17 points. Because the Niners don’t blitz, when ever they do blitz the other team knows it is coming. And a question for everyone, has Kyle ever put 4 WRs on the line? I would love to see Kittle, Deebo, Jennings, and Pearsall on the line, and spread out. CMC in the back field. Bill W. Had Rice, Taylor, Brent, Craig and Rathman. No nobody matches Rice, but the current players are certainly as talented as Bills team. Kyle relies on Kittle for blocking too much.
New thread is up.
