Shit or Get Off the Pot

Here we go again. BA saying he’s not getting what he’s due. The front office dithering around. The team has $32 mill in cap space. Yet I guess they feel the need to drag this out as long as possible to get everyone frustrated and cranked.

Either trade him and move on, or sign him. You KNOW how this usually works out.

Needless stupidity from the front office.

Keep forgetting he’s got a year left on his deal.

Wish they’d just settle on $29 mill and call it a day.

Or let him sit. At this point it’s nothing but stupidity.

Hey they could really screw him over by making him play out this contract at 14 mil? chump change for an elite route runner)then franchise him in 2025 which would really piss him off. I doubt it would come to that.

But BA is not getting JJ,Lamb,StBrown,Hill money só the best he should expect is 3/84 imo a good deal for him and the team.It comes down a lot to the guarantee money on the contract that players are all looking for..

Good post. Either trade him or pay him. BA has to be a little flexible with all this also.

Pearsall signed his contract, all 8 rookies will report to camp.

Huh. That has to rattle BA a tiny bit, anyway.

I can’t pretend to know how these guys feel about these negotiations, but doesn’t BA give ANY thought to how good he has it here? He’s got a QB who is synched with him, an offense that is fantastic, and a team that is a perennial contender.

I just don’t get it. Does it play in his head at all that he could end up in Carolina? Or Washington?

lots of wr’s seem to have inflated ego’s and it’s all about the money. That in itself isn’t such a bad thing but it’s more of an “I” thing than a team thing. Which is not good imo. Of course we really don’t know what’s going on and the media says whatever it feels like true or not.

Rookie pools are more or less structured by the league Chuck.

BA is free to get whatever he can get. When free spending GM’s move the market the next guy wants to move it again.

It is what it is 🤷‍♂️

It’s more what’s going on in BA’s head. He has to think he’s lost a little leverage if we have Pearson in the fold.

Does the situation he’s in here play any part in his decision? He’s got a QB that targets him all the time. Would he be happy playing in DC with an unproven rookie and a bunch of stiffs?

    • NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

      My guess?

He’s looking for a payday, which I don’t fault him for. Grab whatever the market will bear.

We’re in a tough place with Bosa and Deebo deals.

Like Purdy, the rookie deal causes change to the budget. If BA gets his deal, here or elsewhere, you need the core guys to get the prize.

They have room this year. The front office needs to play it like this is their last best shot. Because it just might be.

The Deebo contract keeps him with the Niners this year, but frees them up to trade him next year with very little pain. The Bosa contract isn’t one they want to get out of for the foreseeable future and if you want a player at the top of his game, at arguably the second most important position, that’s expensive and they are happy to pay him.

Aiyuk is young and talented. He is going to cost $28m+ to sign him for 3 or 4 real years with void years tacked on. Pearsall has a similar skillset but isn’t a proven commodity except in Tshirt and shorts so far, but does look very promising. Aiyuk has nothing to fear from Pearsall in terms of signing this contract.

The league has plenty of examples of players leaving a team they excelled with and turning into crap at their new team. They did however get paid, which was their primary goal. Aiyuk is young enough that he will probably get 2 bites at a major payday contract. If his reps are smart they will weigh that appropriately, since if Aiyuk signs with the Niners he gets his bag now and will almost certainly remain a top tier WR for the next 3 to 4 years making him eligible for that next contract at 30 years old and getting a second bag worth more than this one, presuming he is still at the top of his game. Or he holds out and forces a trade to whomever to get that extra mil or two a year that disrespects him, takes food off his table and he just can’t live without, risking falling into mediocrity with a different team, scheme, QB etc.

Deebo is in a different category. When healthy he was the engine that drove this offense, anytime he was hurt there was a very noticeable drop off. However, 2 factors have changed that dynamic. CMC has plays that also cross positional roles and that has eaten into some of Deebo’s opportunities. Secondly, Deebo is a bit older, a bit less dynamic than at his peak, and has had repeated injuries diminishing his overall value to the team.

I’m not saying he is washed up by any means, but he is less effective and less available both of which make him a prime trade candidate next year while he still offers a good value to the Niners.

I don’t see this year as the last chance to win the ring. Even with the Purdy contract next year they will still have the core guys signed, a bunch of young guys in their second and third year in the system waiting for their opportunity, and a fresh set of drafted players.

The reality is that the first year of the Purdy contract doesn’t hit the salary cap meaningfully. He gets his first big payday out of bonus money. Year two is where it really starts to bite hard. The Niners back load their contracts and rely on the salary cap increases over 3 years to write those checks in the future.

I figure they have a two year window right now and that might easily be a three year window if this year’s and last year’s drafts yield 5 or 6 high quality replacement starters.

I do think that this year is their best opportunity though and I believe they did enough to restock players for another strong push.

Quality post 12th, well done Sir.

Now…get that 6th Lombardi already, can we do that please 🌉

No shit. Nice post, 12th. My thinking is the team can’t take the long view where it comes to talent. You get as good as possible NOW. Let the chips fall after the parade.

At least Aiyuk met with the team yesterday to talk. Don’t know what cam eof it, but hopefully there’s some progress.
