Rebuilding the Defense

For a team that had one of the top defenses in the league last year, the 49ers front office isn’t sitting on their hands. Gone is Steve Wilks. Replaced by Nick Sorensen and Brandon Staley. Gone are Javon Kinlaw, Clelin Ferrell, Arik Armstead, and Isaiah Oliver.

The recent signings are OL Ben Barch, DE Leonard Floyd, DE Yetur Gross-Matos, DT Jordan Elliott, and LB Eric Kendricks.

Kyle Juicechick restructured his deal to get back $1.8 mill in cap space, George Odum, Colton McKivitz, and Brandon Allen signed deals, and Jauan Jennings was tendered a one-year deal. So the Niners have first refusal rights to sign him should he get an offer.

All in all, I think the Niners did themselves well. Kinlaw and AA have been injury-prone and inconsistent. Although AA was a stalwart for a long time on the D line. Darnols is Darnold. We weren’t gonna keep him at $10 mill per. Floyd and Kendricks are bona fide studs and should fit right in with the reconstituted defense.

As usual I would like to see more action on the O line. The draft is coming, and there is still time to make moves.

I am hoping all the FA moves on D allow them to go OL early in the draft. We’ve hit home runs in mid rounds for a lot of positions. But not OL. Not OL really anywhere in the draft in the Shanalynch era.

    • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

The reason is the huge monstrous catastrophic effup of two future 1st rd picks in the Tre Lance mind blowing stupidity trade.

Shanalynch covered all other positions adequately in the aftermath except OT. Where journalists continue kissing the feet of the overrated Shanalynch .

Purdy saved those two overrated mother effing etc etc.

Banks turned out to be a pretty good pick in the 2nd but we hardly ever pick an Olineman early.

When you look as their history of drafting through the first 3 rounds, that trade doesn’t mean a hell of a lot. 2022 saw Drake Jackson, Danny Gray, and T Price-Davis in the 2nd round. Trey Sermon. Kinlaw, Solly Thomas, and Reuben Foster in the 1st.

    Not really sweating that shit.

Juice has agreed to his payout restructure after all.

Probably cause Kristen Juice said I still can use your bank roll in my jacket product lines I want to expand on.He wasn’t going anywhere but here, the Juices,Kittle’s,Warners are a tight media group no reason to breakup the band..

Saw something cross my phone that Dallas signed Kendricks.

    What the fuck??

Not seeing it anywhere else yet.

    Bobby Wagner goes to Washington.
There’s a menace we won’t be dealing with anymore.

    That’s fucked up.

    Oh well.

Jerry’s getting a good laugh out of this.

Another fat man in the middle to warm NJ’s heart though.

Maliek Collins for a 7th round pick.

The warmup jackets are absolutely sick.

I read that we were trying to trade AA to Houston prior to giving up the Pick.
    And this –

DL Arik Armstead’s release DOES come with the June 1 designation, per source. Will split his dead money up over next two seasons.

Yeah, unless we got something like a 1 and a 3, Deebo ain’t going anywhere.

    This year.

Whatever happens in the 2024 season will tell a lot about the direction of the team.

The window opens for Purdy in January of 2025 so time will tell.

AZ got FA Jonah Williams yesterday for LT. The deal 2 years 30 million. He is only 26 and same weight and one inch shorter than Zakelj. Did we bid at all or out of dollars.

Seems the strong OT class has up to 8 starter quality. The first 6 likely gone around pick #20. The last 2 likely stay at RT.

So conservative at #31 take OT Mason or Sumataia then best IOL with trade up for OG. Zakelj for OC with 32 1/2 inch arm. Combine was 5.13 40 while Jonah Williams was 5.10.

Maybe a deebo trade can get us a Trent Williams successor .

Bye bye Ray Ray, he’s going to the Falcons.

3 years, $51 million for AA. The sage delivered for his team.

Now there are rumors the sage and aiyuk have contacted each other. Do not want to go through the deebo game. Trade this egotist before day 1 of the draft. Negotiations start with jaguars 1st and 2nd. Use their #17 for WR1. Use their 2nd to trade up #31 and get the best OT, start with Alt.

Our O is established just plug and play. Sage is delivering.

  17. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Great news the 49ers have resigned OG Jon Felciano (sp?)to a 1 year contract.
He was rated number 2 by PPF as a zone blocker behind only Guard Jeff Linderstrom of the Falcons..
49ers have also restructured contracts with Kittle&Hargrave saving an additional 16 M in much needed cap space..

  18. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Lots of one year deals and two restructurings . IOL Feliciano and WR Conley back and Greenlaw hole covered. May also get a safety that can do cover-2.

  19. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Niners signed a CB/special teams gunner off the Lions.

The team is addressing a lot of the holes through free agency so I expect them to draft BPA rather than positional need unless those 2 things align.

So far I feel they have been thoughtfully aggressive.
