Shanny didn’t know the rule. I sure didn’t. EVERY player asked didn’t know the rule, so obviously it was not talked about by the coaching staff to the team.
That being said, it would be nigh retarded to take the ball first. Mainly because of exactly how it played out for SF.
Whatever the first team possessing the ball does, you know what your priority is as the 2nd team. Mahomes knew what he had to do. Get into FG range and then go for the TD. And Reid said, if the Niners get 7, I’m going for 8. Shanny’s talking analytics and probabilities, and blah blah blah. He sounded like Gabe Kapler. Utter bullshit. He didn’t know.
If the D forces a 3 and out, boom, you are pretty much set. Decent field position, get 40 yards, kick the FG. You give up a FG, all you need to do is get close, and take your shots for the win. You don’t make it, you tie the game. You give up a TD? Well, you have 4 downs to move the ball every set of downs to match or go for the 2 and win. Shanny didn’t know.
Beyond that, this fucking team has been constrained by the inability to contain a good pass rush. One deep shot to Aiyuk would have been 6 had Purdy been given time. Deebo was bracketed all night, Kittle was ineffective, but I never saw why. Only Jennings had a good game. Aiyuk had a couple catches, but Purdy was under pressure all night. And Shanny did his usual ‘I’m, so clever, I’ll stop running and give up a -8 yard screen pass’ play. Trent Williams had his worst game as a Niner.
And why does the team continually fuck up punts? It goes back to Harbaugh and Kyle fucking Williams. Or even Preston Riley. At least we didn’t give up a huge KO return, but we did have the XP fuckup. 55 yard FG? No prob. Chip shot XP? Nope!
Our own special teams have done more damage to this team than any other opponent.
FUUUUUUUUUCK!!! Build an O line! Fix the fucking special teams!!!!!
And we need a linebacker to replace Greenlaw. He’s out at least half the season with his achilles tear. That was yet another fucked up thing. This team is snakebit. They could have overcome any one of these fuckups, but add them up, and we didn’t. And I just love watching the twtter feeds of Bosa getting held all over the place. Same with Warner. FML This one fucking sucks.
And now we get a hugely underwhelming Giants team to look forward to.
More fun with Yaz, Slater, Davis, and the gang that can’t hit .205.
Hopefully the Warriors can gell and gain some consistency down the stretch.
When all is said and done this years 49er season was one of the best in a long-long time and I am so grateful for that especially since the whole fucking world is full of crap.
Go Giants.
Yeah, fun season but ultimately heartbreaking. Think we have a few good years left, but we will see. Purdy;s growth will be fun to see. But building a line that can pass block should be priority #1. Signing Aiyuk 1a.
Jennings is a for sure keeper too.
At least almost all of our players are healthy for the offseason . For draft the top two positions of need are OT then a greenlaw clone.
The Niners really have to find away to resign Juwan Jennings who’s a F/A now and his stock is up bigtime now with his SB performance. If the Niners have held on and won the game Jennings was no doubt MVP of the SB imo..
Yep. Shame that Jauan didn’t get his just desserts.
Sure, winning is a lot better than losing but I still woke up today in a world of shit…
Given our own self inflicted wounds. the ever present ‘officiating menace’ is something you can’t control and, for the most part, can’t implicate or voice an opinion on.
Been joking for years about the Vegas influence on the NFL and now, the legalized gambling attached to it.
Happy to see the Twitter-verse calling out the blatant infractions we here were screaming about all game-long.
Bosa threw it out there during the hype week pregame as well.
Telling all who would pay attention about the grabby nature of the KC O-Line.
Goes back to the Miami SB with these guys, mugging and tackling, and being invisible to the flag tossing minions who ultimately control the game.
Shanny, once again, withers in the heat of the spotlights.
When your O-Line can impose it’s will as run blockers, let them feast.
Spagnola can’t scheme against your pass protection assignments so readily and, in the end, you force him to pack the box and expose HIS Secondary.
Maiocco made the obvious point that in the first 29 SBs we were 5-0.
The next 29, 0-3.
Effn pathetic.
Is BA rumored to want a trade. Can we get a 1st. This draft is deep for WR’s. Help our cap as well, otherwise armstead may get pushed out.
Just heard Giants signed Soler…
A step in the right direction.
Probably has an OPT out at the A/S break…
Haha.
Awesome, thanks.
Tennessee needs WR1 for Will Levis. Trade BA for TENN 2nd. Can bundle pick(s) to move into the 1st rd. Likewise with Washington. Both have very large cap space and need WR1 for the new QB.
Opening sentence contradicted by what I just saw on ESPN. Said Shans, “…sat down with the teams analytics staff and went through the potential scenarios for a game that might reach overtime.” And that this happened “Before the SF Niners started their latest postseason run…”
Further, “Shanahan explained those discussions took place before the playoffs, but he wanted to remain flexible depending on how the game was playing out.”
Column says Shans had position coaches go over things with players. Griese ran it down to Purdy, who said,”He explained the rules to me and everything so I had an understanding of it.”
Tired of blame game stuff myself. The Niners battled Mahomes and co. to the wire in overtime, and still have best team in their Division and entire NFC.
Much of the sports media has tuned into sensationalist asswipes.
The Swiftie faction WInder – 😀
The game has turned to marketing 101
Shans knew the rules and what he wanted to do way ahead of time. Bottom line Niners battled Chiefs for 75 minutes in a great game. Time to move on and figure out how to get back.
Wlikes out as DC.
Not surprised at all.
Defense was awkwardly ineffective as the season went on, and the two playoff games before the SB were scary.
Plus, gives Shanny a scapegoat for the SB loss…
Shanahan saw what spagnuola did with lesser personnel . Wilkes could not get us there . Murphy’s law
I wonder what tree we will pick the new one from. Wilkes was pretty much gone anyway just a little sooner than I thought.
It wouldn’t surprise me if the Jets fire Saleh. He would probably gladly come back.
1 dead 10-15 injured 3 critical at KC Chiefs parade at the end of the parade.Police say 2 people were taken into custody .. Just another tragic situation in the world we live in.. Praying for the family members and especially to the individual who was killed!
Shanahan’s explanation about why he fired Wilks made sense to me. He basically said the LB’s weren’t played effectively, which is what many of us were saying. Playing off 8 to 10 yards was a big departure from what both Ryans and Saleh did with the same guys.
I don’t see it as a scapegoat deal so much as Wilks wasn’t able to adapt to what the Niners had run before. He’s from a DB background, Ryans and Saleh were from a LB background.
He did ok but not elite as a coach and the numbers show it was a cut below both former DC’s.
This SB was much closer than the one in Miami. The main reason for the loss was the punt screw up. Niners lost a possession and the Chiefs got an easy TD. The missed PAT didn’t help but it wasn’t the big momentum shifter that the muffed punt was.
12th we have been challenged by ST play for years.
John Harbaugh did us in vs Baltimore in the NOLA SB and, of course, he has a ST background to lean on.
We need to address it directly and treat it with a higher priority.
Once again, our coaching staff has been thinned which will create bigger challenges leading up to the Draft.
Another SB loss is tough to swallow.
Oh I’m just guessing Shanahan got some extended inputs from his Captains on Defense Bosa&Warner who neither got on board with Wilks defensive schemes for most of the year and certainly throughout à disappointing playoff run against the Packers&Lions.Wilks was the fall guy cause cause an arrogant Shanahan being the HC/and OC ( which I’m not keen on anymore, losing McDaniel &Kubiak now over it)can’t fire himself.
The situation I think that Wilks lost his job was when Shanahan had to rush and burn a TO in OT cause they were in a 5 man deep zone and were confused on coverage. When the coach is screaming cause the right alignment isn’t in it’s a death sentence for your DC..
I still have one more ring than Shanahan does. By the way, I might hire Wilks and his D will slap Purdy around.
That’s the most unintentionally funny thing you’ve ever posted, skippy.
Or should I say, Dennis?
Is Ron Rivera still on the market?
A former LB himself, he might be an interesting option to consider if still unemployed.
Wonder also whether Belichick would like to fill that vacancy for us?
Highly unlikely SHanny would want him looking over his shoulder but I sure wouldn’t mind his influence if he’s willing.
I think we should kick the tires on Vrable.
Why not Winder?
I read a piece last night that Bosa felt they were unprepared late in the game and I’m sure that lent some fuel to the fire to get Wilks removed –

Riverboat Ron wouldn’t be bad. I’d much prefer the talent on the defense taking risks and being the aggressor.
Saleh’s not going anywhere. He isn’t the problem in NY.
I think Jets already announced he’ll be back next season.
He’s a terrible HC…
Owner says Saleh concentrates on O this season. Maybe he bolts.
https://jetsxfactor.com/2024/02/09/ny-jets-woody-johnson-hints-at-change-in-robert-salehs-role/
Here’s a guy I didn’t have on my radar…
https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/some-think-brandon-staley-will-land-in-san-francisco-as-next-defensive-coordinator
A plus for him is when/if he comes over he has the Ram playbook. I read why not Caroll he’s a SF boy worked for the Niners before. I would welcome him.
He is a 3-4 fangio type. Nope
Staley??? Fuck to the no. If Saleh takes the fall, I’d love to have him back.
The Jets are a fucking Aaron Rodgers nightmare of a bad dream wrapped in a steaming turd. Their front office is the problem. Mainly because they went all-in on sucking Rodgers dick. They destroyed their team following Rodgers direction and are paying heavily for it.
New thread is up.
