Mr. Wilks, Please Step Up

Here we are on the edge of a Super Bowl. Yes, we got past the pesky (and pesky for the foreseeable future) Packers, and now face the Dan Campbell-led Deetroit Lions. A team that hasn’t been in an NFC Championship game since before we won our last Super Bowl. As sad as they’ve been, our playoff record is a mess since the 1994 season.

And, as much as our offense struggled this last game, at least we have a much better game weather-wise. Sunny and 70 degrees for this one. The late start will dry the field out just that much more, so Brock and Co, with or without Deebo, better score early and score often.

Mainy because I have stark reservations about our defense. The $ billion defensive line is not getting home near enough lately. And Wilks seem very reluctant to dial up blitzes. We played the LBs pretty deep to start the game, and GB picked us apart with absolutely NO pressure on Love. This has to stop. Watching DeMeco, or Saleh-led defenses and you see a lot more blitzes and stunts. I didn’t see any early, and I haven’t rewatched the game yet to see what we did in the 2nd half, but this vanilla defense is maddening when you see Green bay simply getting 6 yards a play and marching down the field.

Say what you will, but the Niners lucked out big time on the dropped pick and the spot on the 4th and 1 that Green Bay didn’t get. Those 2 plays change the game big time, and our deficit is a lot more to overcome.

I really don’t understand why more isn’t being asked of the D line. Simply rushing 4 with no stunting, no blitzing, and no disguising things just pisses me off to no end. Why? Because Goff isn’t gonna get more than 12 yards running the ball, and if you rattle him early he’s worthless for the rest of the day.

Goff should be good for 2-3 interceptions if we can rattle him. Playing the milquetoast soft defense to start the game pretty much guarantees that Deetroit scores a TD on their first drive and gives Goff confidence. For all the talk about how good we are defensively, as the teams get better, our base D isn’t generating game-changing plays. It took until halfway through the 3rd quarter before we got meaningful pressure on Love, and it resulted in 2 interceptions.

Travers always put on kick-ass shows. Wore this album out a few times. Saw him 3-4 times.

Don’ know if this will happen to you guys, but my feed goes right into a live version of Peter Green and Fleetwood Mac’s Oh Well. Killer.

John Brebbia signs with the White Sox!! maybe that’ll get Flav’s blog going again!

Niners have 11 picks in the draft, 4 are compensatory.
    1st
    2nd
    3rd x 2 (1 comp)
    4th x 2 (1 Cowboys)
    5th (Comp)
    6th x 2 (Both Comp)
    7th x 2 (1 Broncos)

    A lot to work with.

CB #1 on my radar 12th.
OT / DT would likely be next.
Hard to know what happens with BA at this point but I expect Kinlaw to walk and Trent is winding down.

      • Berger's avatar Berger says:

I agree with your positions but would switch them. OL first, CB 2nd. Of course, that could change depending on who is on the board.

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

They better figure a way to sign BA he just has to much heart as a player and Purdy loves throwing to him. We are gonna lose players but we always do. After we lose em we seem to find some others.

I’m with you NJ, neglected drafting a CB for years. CB, OL, DL, TE, whatever

Yeah, I’m with Bergs. O line, O line, O line. This line needs depth big time.

Interior D line needs depth as well. C Young hasn’t shown me he’s worth the $$$ (yet) so draft someone.

Man, rewatching the game and Thomas got cooked over and over and over.

The pressure was better than I first thought, and we did stop them from getting TDs early, but man, we missed a LOT of coverages and Love hit some huge plays.

I guess the Iggles and Cowgirls are gluttons for punishment. Both re-upped their coaches.

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Sirianni is a dumb Brandon Staley. McCarthy rode an MVP QB to 16 playoff appearances and one SB. Both have done little with a lot.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I missed this exchange on the sindelines re McCloud (from the Chron):

Before the game-winning drive, backup wide receiver Chris Conley had played 17 snaps and Ray-Ray McCloud had played 16 with Samuel sidelined.

The division of labor then changed. Conley played eight snaps and McCloud played two on the 12-play march. And Conley contributed: He had a 17-yard reception at Green Bay’s 26-yard line.

Conley’s uptick in snaps with the season on the line probably had something to do with how the 49ers’ previous possession ended. Purdy was screaming in frustration after throwing a deep incompletion to McCloud on 3rd-and-10 from Green Bay’s 40-yard line. On the play, McCloud broke outside to the left sideline and Purdy threw inside. Purdy and McCloud were shown discussing their miscommunication on the sideline.

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Thx. Yeah, that play was noticeable but I didn’t see the exchange on the sidelines.

And here I give Shanny shit for not adjusting. I like Ray Ray but he should remain the PR/KR.

  9. Winder's avatar Winder says:

After losing Peters we will see how we draft. Things are liable to change. Anyway unless you are a Niner fan it seems like the whole world wants to see the Lions win. people want to see the long failed team win something for a change. All I can say is I still think we are the better team. We shall see

  10. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Over on KNBR, they are advocating for the 5 man front that Wilkes used in 1, one game! And the 5 man front worked. He had better use it

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

We definitely have to mix it up otherwise we are too predictable. Still not real sure about our db’s playing man on those situations but we have to try and get to Goff.

      • Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

I want to say Wilkes used it after the bye, everyone want Wilkes down on the field after the 3 game losing streak, and that is when he used the 5 man front

    FWIW (from the SI bots):

Kyle Shanahan revealed Wednesday at his press conference that the 49ers received encouraging news on Deebo Samuel’s shoulder injury. Samuel is “feeling better” with his pain, but will not be on hand to practice.

Shanahan still would not dispense with what exactly is wrong with Samuel’s shoulder aside from that it “hurts” him. Still, it is still somewhat good news with Samuel, especially since Shanahan says that it makes him “feel better” about it. Samuel suffered the injury early in the divisional playoff game against the Packers. He wouldn’t exit the game immediately as he would try to give it one more go.

Perhaps a sign that another DT added to the rotation will suggest the 5-man front approach?

  16. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

God, I hope so, NJ. We HAVE to do more that the simple 4 man rush with the LBs playing it safe. Deetroit has a good enough line as it is. Play it safe, and Goff will have all day to throw.

  17. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Those 3.flanked by bosa and chase for the 5 man line. Goff be knee shaking.

  18. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I love Traffic. I play their Greatest Hits CD at least a couple of times a year. Just my opinion, but this is the best version of Dear Mr Fantasy. Can’t go wrong with adding Eric Clapton and Steve Gadd.

  19. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I like the 5 man D-line. Problem is it needs to be situational because it is limited, personnel wise. It worked well vs the Steelers because they run an old fashioned offense. Detroit can read and react a lot better than the Steelers. If I saw a 5 man D-line, I would throw a bubble screen to out flank it. Getting the ball out quick on slants and other quick routes defeats it.

When I was in HS, we had just beaten Ronnie Lott and his Eisenhower team in the playoffs. We then had to play the #2 team in the country, St Paul. We beat them by using a 7 man front to take away their power running game.

  20. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

There decent online is missing a starting OG , Jonah Jackson . In 6 pass plays the replacement gave up 5 pressures. Could blitz A gap with LB and the 4 man line.

  21. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Snappy Khaki to the Chargers just like I thought. He’ll get a lot more out of that team than Staley did.

Quantity, not quality. But this is where they do well. I hope losing Adam Peters doesn’t fuck this up. But I hope they hit much better at the top of the draft.

    New thread is up.
