Everything pretty much fell into place yesterday as the resurgent Cowboys took care of bidness against a suddenly vulnerable Philadelphia Eagles team that has crumbled badly under the white light and white heat of crunch time. In consecutive weeks, Philly’s defense gave up 42 and 33 points while their offense put up 4 field goals and one TD (their D did score on a pick 6 and a strip-sack-TD).
Even the lowly Bears got into the act by beating the Deetroit Lions badly.
So, we hold our destiny in our hands. 4 games left, and the only real doozer is the Baltimore game. The 49ers own all the tie breakers, so that’s like a 0.5 game advantage there as well. But as we saw earlier this year, we can sometimes lose focus. And yesterday was a little wobbly, but Purdy and company unleashed some beautiful deep passes to put Seattle away. The strike to Deebo on 3rd and 11 was an absolut dart. As were the two deep balls to Aiyuk, and the dart to Kittle to put the game away.
Purdy really seems to be growing into his role as team leader despite more than a few mistimed throws and a few miscommunicated routes. One which led to the early pick.
The defense was inconsistent early, but that was due to us getting banged up in this game. Mooney Ward left early and Ambry Thomas was immediately burned for a 30 yard Metcalf TD despite solid coverage. Dre Greenlaw left for a couple series, and we were immediately burned by a play we run all the time, the TE drag route over the middle for a TD, and Javon Hargrave went out with a hamstring.
Thankfully, Greenlaw returned, as he is the heartbeat of this defense. I have no idea the severity of Mooney and Gravedigger, but giving them a break for the AZ game seems like the thing to do.
Still and all, the defense got 4 sacks and 2 picks. The last one a hysterical comedy of errors and ejections as Fred Warner pitched the pick to Greenlaw and was cheap-shotted by Metcalf. Warner responded by shoving Metcalf to the ground and walking away. Metcalf grabbed Warner’s facemask with both hands while Warner laughed at him with his arms outstretched. The skirmish ensued all around them. Deommodore Lenoir gave Metcalf a nice shove (and that was it) and was ejected along with Metcalf.
So, the 49ers have the distinction of having players thrown out of two games in a row.
I guess they an’t call us a finesse team!!!
Haven’t heard this one in a while.
Not-so-good new on the injury front. Javon Hargrave has a pulled hamstring and MAY miss ‘several weeks’ per Kyle Shanahan.
More should be known later today.
Love it!!!
Just heard Chris Berman say:
“I want to Brock and roll all night
And Purdy every day.”
Listening to Brent Jones on KNBR this afternoon, he said when the Niners got to the playoffs they would just crush opponents, I hope Kyle was listening. It appeared that Kyle went for the jugular playing the Eagles. Hopefully he plays that way during the playoffs.
Well, call me surprised with tonight’s results –
Both TN and NYG get the W’s against heavy favorites.
Nice place to be as 9er fans.
Always comes down to the health factors in December as we know.
Get some of the starters needed rest Kyle.
Run CMc especially.
We have our destiny in our hands to make a legit Playoff run now and with any luck, secure the home field.
Can’t take AZ and LA lightly either.
Division games are always unpredictable and we know each other very well.
Keeping Murray contained is a job in itself.
Connor is no slouch either.
Then we have Lamar, the human joystick to contend with.
Keep focused and TCB.
It would be foolish at this point to take our foot off the gas. No other teams in the league would play spoiler against us than either LA, or AZ. We have been playing well as we all know but we are also banged pretty good. Those left standing definitely have to step up. With Oren going down we are kinda short on LB’s
Run CMC is the biggest X factor in overcoming Shanahan’s playoff failures.
That being said, yeah, we have to keep rolling. I don’t think all these teams are gonna win out, though. If we lose to Balt, it won’t hurt as I think Seattle beats the reeling eagles, and Dallas has 3 tough games remaining.
But we HAVE to stomp the easier ones as they are all NFC games.
Miami had a 14 point lead with 3 minutes left and simply played awful defense. Kinda Shanny-esque.
And really poor play calling on their one possession.
Winder, that version X is too funny!
Yeah, I was surprised that Jackie Wilson was part of that. I bet a lot of performers do that kind of stuff but they just don’t let it be released.
Long time ago blues DJ I knew on public radio had Victoria Spivey record in similar vein “Shave it Dry”.
The Memphis Jug band put out some really good ones too.
Good stuff. I think Van Halen did one like that.
Aerosmith
This guy does a little too much talking but it is good stuff.
Heard this more than once on Dr. Demento. He also got the Beastie Boys a lot of air time back then. Girls was a song he played a lot.
SF Giants signed Korean CF, Lee to 6 year deal, $113 Mil
Yeah, that’s a big one, good news indeed, breaks the ice a bit. More, please!
That’s a positive sign, I read the guy can hit and steal bases plus has a very low strikeout ratio. Kinda just what we need.
Very positive. IMO, we haven’t really had a real CFer in years. Hopefully Lee will be the guy. Only 25 too.
Woo hoo! @Was just gonna post that.
Wonder if this gets Flav out of hiding.
Haha, yeah I was wondering the same thing, although I think maybe it will take another big signing to coax him out… 🙂
hah! Fucking Dray gonna get tossed again.
The Warriors need to trade Klay, trade Wiggins, and bench Draymond.
Would still like to see the Giants go after Bellinger. And Yamamoto.
On KNBR they said this guy should be in the lead off, he is a contact hitter, walks a lot, can steal a base. Also he will be the everyday CF.
Now the Giants need two more starters, and an everyday infield.
I’m willing to give Schmitt a chance at 3rd. Luciano at short. Wilbur at 2nd and Wade at 1st. Unless they can find some better guys.
I just DO NOT want to see Slater out there anymore. Haniger has to do more than hang out in the trainer’s room. If they can find another OFer I’d be thrilled. A right-handed power bat would be nice.
I wanted kepler but he re-upped with the Twins.
New thread is up.
