Game XIII – The Big Push

Well, here we are poised to make the final push to the playpoffs. I think we really gave Dallas a big head’s up on how to beat Philly. Attack the LBs. Short passes tore them up all day and through the night. Quick runs up the middle gashed them as well. Philly’s offense was stifled by solid CB play.

Us? We just need to keep the pedal down. No slip-ups. No backsliding. We’ve proven we can win on the road, but I sure don’t want to go to Philly in January.

Gonna be an interesting day regarding the playoffs. Philly could go from 1 to 5. We could be #1. Dallas #3. Deetroit #2. Funny I’m not even really paying attention to Deetroit, but they are in the mix. With their weak-ass schedule.

Regarding the baseball Giants from last thread. I read where we picked up another oft-injured A’s pitcher but I can’t think of his name right now. To me this looks like where we left off last year.

No matter what another team does if we fuck up this run it is totally on us. To me we have the best team we have has since the SB years thanks mostly to Purdy and our D-line. I loved the way we played last week it was definitely Walshian. I still don’t trust Shanny to do the right thing yet.

  2. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Shit. Nice start but Ward looks hurt.

  3. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Oliver is gonna get picked on. Ambry didn’t get his head around fast enough.

  4. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Pass rush off to a slow start. Yeah. groin for Ward. Questionable.

  5. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Defense gotta step up in this one. This is gonna be a grinder.

  6. Winder's avatar Winder says:

I had to turn the radio off one of the announcers said that CMC wasn’t that good of a running back. I couldn’t listen to em any longer.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Looks like we thought the game was over after that first run.

    Playing like shit.

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

WTF???? Shanahan is fucking chickenshit!!! Could have had the ball near midfield with 40 seconds and a couple timeouts.

  9. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Jesus Shanahan u have 3TO’s in your pocket and easily get the ball back near mid field and u let Seahawks run out the clock?? That was stupid clock management!!!

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Wow. Refs getting involved. That is a horseshit call on Bell.

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

They are passing all the time and we just sit back and let it happen.

  12. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Kittle to the House TD!!on another beauty by Purdy! 6,000 career receiving yards for Kittle congratulations!!

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Fuck, man, these Seattle games are always a battle. I’m mostly glad that Greenlaw wasn’t hurt too bad. He is so key to this defense.

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Purdy, the pick notwithstanding had an excellent game. he hit all those deep passes on the goddamn money.

  15. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Hargrave has a hammy, but I haven’t seen any reports yet about its severity. Groins can be tricky so, yeah, hoping Ward’s isn’t too bad, but he was walking gingerly on the sideline. I guess we should be grateful it’s the Cardinals up next, but they always seem to be problematic for the 49ers, just like Seattle is. Ain’t no gimmes in this league.

Purdy has been a fucking revelation. I don’t know how anybody can watch what he’s doing week in and week out and continue to question his talent, but those idiots are out there. This dude is 100% legit and he’s getting better just about every week. The way he reads defenses is uncanny. An unbelievable story.

  16. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

George Kittle’s career as a receiving TE has been rejuvenated since Purdy took over. This team has so many weapons on offense and Purdy doesn’t just find his guys, he develops chemistry with them, “throws them open,” so to speak, and only the greats do that, IMO.

It’s not a fair comparison, but so much of what he does is reminiscent of Montana. Joe always knew where to go with the ball and that was key to running Walsh’s scheme. It’s the same with Shanahan’s offense. I think he’s been waiting all his life for a QB like Brock Purdy. Now we’re seen just how good his offense can be.

  17. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

What’s that, 5 straight over Seattle? Having lived in the PNW for almost 40 years now, you all have no idea how sweet that is. Nothing shuts these fools up like losing to the 49ers. I’ve caught so much grief over the years when the Seahawks dominated SF. This is sweet revenge.

    • willedav's avatar willedav says:

Oh yeah. Company I worked for had 5-6 stores up there and we had lots of MGMT conferences there. A supervisor had season tickets. Eff em!

  18. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Glad Seattle is done for the year. Listening to the Seattle radio guys I thought we were playing bad but after looking at the highlights we looked really good. The last time I have seen so many big plays on a continuous basis is when we had Rice and Taylor. This team is dangerous. Hope the injuries are not to serious. Great time to be a 49er fan.

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Are you in the Seattle area, Winder? You were probably listening to Steve Raible. He’s been their play-by-play guy since Pete Gross died years ago. I can’t stand him myself, way too much of a rah-rah, homer type, but there’s not much about the Seahawks I do like. He even played WR for them back in the eighties.

  19. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Kid made that 60-yarder look easy. Wow.

  20. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I’ll tell you the best throw Purdy made was the one last week to CMC when on a broken play, Purdy somehow communicated to CMC to break his sideline route and turn upfield. He threw a rainbow to the spot where he thought CMC would be if he broke the route. It was perfectand they got 25-30 yards.

  21. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Yeah, that was a sweet play. This kid has a feel for the position that you just can’t teach, nor quantify, which drives NFL talent evaluators nuts. They’ll bite on the measureables almost every time. And just like a pitcher throwing 97 mph does not guarantee success, neither does being able to sling a football 60+ yards. A nice tool, sure, but there’s way more to the position than just that.

And BTW, Purdy’s ball to Deebo today was 47 yards in the air and an absolute dime. For a dink-and-dunk QB, he sure throws it downfield pretty well. And outside the numbers, and over the middle.

As was the case with Montana, Purdy’s arm is a lot better than he gets credit for. More importantly, he’s accurate.

  22. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yep. He had 3 deep balls today that couldn’t have been thrown any better.

19 completions for 368 is flat nuts. Purdy went down to a 122 rating.

Philly’s defense is getting shredded again. And their offense is sputtering.

  23. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

    Go Dallas.

  24. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

5 straight games with 70% completion percentage for only the 4th time in NFL history, according to Matt Maiocco anyway.

  25. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Sorry, 7th straight game, tying Drew Brees and Sam Bradford for second all time and one short of Montana’s 1989 record of 8. Not just good numbers, historic numbers. Mr. Irrelevant indeed.

  26. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Haha, the Seahawks get the Eagles next week on MNF. That should be interesting. If the Cowboys can hang on, the Niners will be sitting pretty.

  27. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Prescott, OTOH, may be the most overrated QB in the league. What a boneheaded play.

  28. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, would be cool to see Philly lose their 3rd in a row to Seattle. Lock actually played pretty well today.

They are no push-overs, 6-7 or not.

  29. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

    #1 seed!

  30. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Dallas took a page out of our playbook tonight, they attack em just like we did last week. They had the Philly defense running in circles at times. Big win for us and fuck Dallas

  31. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Dallas played the role of the useful idiot tonight, helping to vault the Niners into the #1 seeding. So now, yes, fuck ’em. lol

  32. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

My knock on Jimmeh all along was his inability to throw the deep ball.
Can’t shake the SB miss in Miami for E-Man that could have been Ring 6.

Oh what coulda been but for noodle arm happy feet Jimmeh.

Nice read from Cosell regarding Purdy’s unmeasurables and his opinion on why he was passed over by the rest of the talent Scouts.
Ability to see Defensive coverage rotations and as we see regularly, anticipation throws.

Seems Brian Griese gets the crown for convincing Lynch/Shanny to give him the shot at the NFL as he (Griese) called several Iowa St games as a broadcaster and liked what he saw.

Ironic, in the end, that he’s wearing 13 too.
    Grew up a Marino fan.

  33. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Won’t be long now in Philly.
They’ll be screaming for everyone to be fired or released.

Nothing better than the City of Brotherly Love going cannibalistic to keep their big mouths busy when they can’t heckle and chest thump 😀

    5 to 1 goes 1 to 5 😀

  36. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    # One Seed!!!! Great news. This all worked out like I hoped. Deetroit even lost!

Yep. Read about Griese scouting Purdy. He was all over the guy. Lynch’s call to Purdy on being drafted is floating around the interwebs as well.

Pretty fucking nuts that Purdy is doing so much so soon. Not sure why this isn’t a bigger deal, but he’s just low-key amazing.

I mean, shit. even Brady had a year on the bench before he took off.

    • willedav's avatar willedav says:

I think Tim Ryan on radio said Garappolo had all these guys too. And prime edition Mostert earlier, but not with results of Purdy. Love accuracy going deep. So tired of barrage of sideline outs and 2 yard slants.

  37. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

I hadn’t heard that about Griese liking what he saw out of Purdy in college and urging the Niners to draft him. Very cool. The legend grows.

  38. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

In case it’s behind the pay wall. The gist of it.

In the offseason, over a span of several months, Griese and assistant quarterbacks coach Klay Kubiak were charged with studying college quarterbacks, about 15 in all, and presenting their grades and evaluations to the rest of the staff before the draft. They did so understanding it could be fruitless. The 49ers had Trey Lance, backup Nate Sudfeld and plenty of other draft needs.

But Griese and Kubiak saw something in Purdy, who didn’t have great size (6-foot-1, 220 pounds) or eye-popping arm strength. But he was a four-year starter at Iowa State, set 32 school records, and led the Cyclones to four straight winning seasons for the first time since 1923-27.

The coaches met with Purdy via Zoom before the draft and discussed his background along with X’s and O’s. And they got intel on his character from other sources. Running backs coach Anthony Lynn, for example, spoke with one of Purdy’s teammates who was entering the draft, running back Breece Hall, about playing with the QB.

When it comes to quarterbacks, Griese is big on accuracy and intangibles. Purdy, who owns Iowa State’s career completion percentage record, kept hitting the mark when it came to other QB traits.

“A lot of folks look at how big they are,” Griese said. “How strong they are. How far they can throw it. How fast they are. And these things are important. Don’t get me wrong. But I think accuracy is undervalued. I think leadership is undervalued. I know that we valued the fact that Brock was selfless. He was humble. Relationships mattered to him.

“You can tell pretty quickly if a quarterback is about lifting up other people around him. Or if it’s about him. And Brock is very clearly about the team and competing and winning.”

The 49ers were impressed with Purdy playing his best in big moments. In his first significant college action as a freshman, he came off the bench and led Iowa State past No. 25 Oklahoma State 48-42. The next week, in Purdy’s first start, the Cyclones beat No. 6 West Virginia 30-14.

    • willedav's avatar willedav says:

Wow that’s awesome. Great to have someone on staff like Griese too. Always liked him as college announcer.

  39. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Purdy is just what our franchise needed. I think the FO should lock him up for the next 10 years this offseason. We would probably get a better deal and terms than if we wait to long. With him at the helm players and coaches will want to be here also. With him on the team it’s a win-win all around. I know the salary cap is going to be difficult with BA, and a few others but Parrage(sp) will just have to make it work.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Hopefully no more losing players like Buckner unless the player is totally after the money then there’s nothing we could really do anyway.

  40. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, I’m worried about Aiyuk, but then again, he really seems to enjoy what he has here. Especially if this team does what it should.

That Baltimore/Rams game was pretty wild but shit, if the Rams can put 31 on them, I like our chances going up against them.

KC is a mess right now amid all the drops and penalties, Buffalo is tough but wildly inconsistent, Cincy seems to have found their diamond in the rough in Folsom High’s own Jake Browning. A guy who has bounced around the Vikings and Bengals practice squads before getting his shot with Cincy and Joe Burrow’s wrist injury.

Miami? They seem to fold against tougher competition, like Dallas, Philly, and Deetroit, but hey, Dallas came on pretty strong yesterday.

Any given Sunday and all that. just hope we’ve left our crap games behind us.
