Who Are We? What Are We Now? UPDATE – Oh Fuck!

_____________________________________________

Just found out Brock Purdy is in the concussion protocol. Apparently on the flight home, Purdy started feeling the effects. No word on when/if/who/Darnold starts, but there’s a chance he will get cleared. Or not.

Those great feels after the Cowboys game seem like last season.

Who the fuck are you? The glorious season that was 2023 took a hard U-turn as Brocktober turned into Octopussies. The vaunted #1 defense let a 2nd string no-name guy from Cleveland beat them, minus Nick Chubb, and the 49er gave up 453 yards to one-time Shanahan protege Kirk Cousins, who were without their star WR Justin Jefferson. No sacks, no pressure, no coverage on screens, and no stopping the short passing game that Minnesota torched us with all night long for a total of 378 yards. 8/13 on 3rd downs. That’s just bad bad bad defense.

Even the Ram game, which was a fairly easy win, the defense gave up 300 yards in the air. 55 passes, ONE sack. What in the wide wide world of sports is going on here? The defense on paper improved this offseason by getting Javon Hargraves from the Eagles, and the recent addition of Randy Gregory from the Broncos.

But on the field, we have fallen from 1st to 8th in yards allowed. We are a shitty 16th in passing yards allowed per game. And this is directly tied to the non-existent pass rush. Drake Jackson and Hargrave lead the team with 3. Billion Dollar Bosa has 2.5. So, what gives? Well, the most obvious issue is Steve Wilks. He has taken a world-class defense and made it mediocre.

The 49ers are 23rd in pressure rate. This team needs to get D line help immediately. Wilks may be a decent coach, but this defense is floundering, and his background is in defensive backfields.

Preferably now. Before this game with Joe Burrow. This could get ugly real fast next Sunday.

Here’s what Shanny said about the all-out blitz on 3rd and 6 with 16 seconds left in the half.

“That’s stuff we’ll discuss throughout this week. Obviously I did not like the result.”

Fuck. Stupid shit. Stupid stupid stupid shit. Lost the fucking game.

Aiyuk and Brock Purdy have a tremendous rapport. They connected on their first five targets for 57 yards. But the Niners star wide receiver — a player who was among the league leaders in several metrics for his position — only saw one target for the rest of the game, which was 28 plays.
One of the most respected analysts, Brian Baldinger, also disagreed with Aiyuk’s lack of usage. Here’s what Baldy said on his most recent appearance on 95.7 The Game:

“I think he should’ve gotten more to be honest with you, especially on first downs. They were basically selling out to play the run. They’re a big blitz 0 team. You’re going to get some 1-on-1’s out there. I like my chances with Brandon Aiyuk against Murphy, Evans, whoever is on the other side.
They chose not to do that. They went to Jennings. At the very end they went to McCloud. It just seemed a little bit unusual that you wouldn’t feature your best receiver.
Especially with Deebo out, you have to lean on your #1. That’s what Aiyuk is. There’s all kinds of things you can do, especially against a Flores defense that’s blitz happy.”

Here’s what Baldy had to say about Purdy’s performance:

The throw to Jennings. I don’t know. I looked at that thing for 20 minutes this morning. It looked like it was a timing throw. Purdy is just throwing to a spot, and Jennings doesn’t get there. So it looks worse than it is. I’m not blaming it on the receiver completely. That looks like a bizarre throw to me.
And then the last one, he steps up in the pocket and kinda wings it. It’s just not a good throw. A careless throw. The two he missed in the first half he just sailed the throw. When he did miss, he missed high.
You get two shots there to go win the game. Defense did their job. Got the ball back to them in good field position. And they couldn’t do anything with it.”

Baldy’s biggest concern, despite all of the mistakes, was the 49ers inability to punch the ball in at the end of the game. He said if the 49ers want to be a prized offense, they have to cash those possessions in. He finished with saying that Purdy is coming back down to earth with his recent play.

I didn’t notice that at the time. I wonder if Minn doubled him. I’ll say one thing,. It’s hard to get any consistency when the offense is on the sidelines 2/3 of the game.

Purdy got rocked on a helmet shot by Jordan Hicks on a sneak play. After that he threw 2 picks I’m just wondering if his senses weren’t right on his decisions? Then to find out now he’s in Concussion protocol I doubt he plays with a bye week following, So Sam Darnold come on down with a much needed win against a Bengals team and Burrow /Chase/Higgins/Mixon now playing better football 🏈

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I think that’s the play he went sideways after getting across the line.

I’m sure Purdy goes if he’s cleared. It’s fucked up that we’re getting beat up now. But it beats week 18.

I’m more concerned that the defense is flatlining. We have way too many good players to be playing so soft and shitty.

  7. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Saw a stat where Shanny is 0-36 when trailing by 8+ points.

    No shit Sherlock.
    He’s too predictable.
Too conservative and, lacks a Plan B.
If the script he installs gets blown up he’s not prepared to tear it up and play to the situations.

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    That’s in the 4th quarter.

We’ve come back from bigger deficits but not late.

  9. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

I think CMC was still hampered by the oblique strain. A combination of that and the O-line not opening up lanes. My other problem is what happened to the WR’s, they appeared to be blanketed on every play? Even if they double teamed Auik, and Kittle there should have been someone open.

  10. Winder's avatar Winder says:

The way I see it is that we have the talent on the roster to be one of the elite teams. I don’t see us having lackadaisical play. So to me a lot of the problem is either in coaching or game plans(which is basically the same thing)and adjusting when needed. The last two games have given the rest of the league a blueprint on how to play us. We have to adjust. Purdy has had some poor play but to me he has proven himself as a elite QB but if we keep throwing him out there with the same plays it will be Jimmy Hat all over again.

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Same fucking thing happened with Deebo last season. Bosa should be up to speed by now though. No excuses.

Cincinnati has a pretty shitty O line so we should be able to get pressure.

The NFL making sure that Tampa covers the spread.

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

According to the team, Purdy is in Phase 4 of the 5 phase concussion protocol. He is apparently passing the protocol with flying colors.

Not sure if that’s a good thing, but there you go. He practiced limitedly yesterday, no contact, so he’s at least out there. Which means something. I guess.

From what I’ve heard, it is fairly rare for players, esp QBs, to pass the protocol within one week, but we’ll prolly hear more today.

    Stay tuned.
