No, it wasn’t the prettiest of wins, and it won’t be winning any Oscars for the beauty of the game, but it was a nice reminder that the 49ers can simply out-will their way to a win. To their credit, the Giants came out swinging and blitzing at any and every opportunity. Say what you will about Wink Martindale, but he’s of a mind that he will bring pressure on every play. And it sorta kinda worked as we stalled out on 3 drives in the red zone and were held to 3 FGs on those drives.

Unfortunately for them, we also scored three touchdowns. Two on long passes where Brock Purdy was able to get get ball out just in the nick of time to hit his receivers. Both plays were well-covered but Purdy hit the marks. Which quieted the ‘he can’t throw deep’ doubters. The game saw the Giants getting chippier and chippier as they were baiting the Niners to retaliate. Notable was Deebo getting hit in the head (to no call) on a crossing route, Deebo getting tackled 5 yards out of bounds to a no-call, Clelin Ferrell getting facemasked on a pass rush, CMC getting facemasked on a carry up the middle, and Dre Greenlaw getting an unsportsmanlike on a fairly questionable call.

Trent Williams, his hate of all teams NFC East still intact, got in a shove and a punch as the 1st half closed. Fun stuff. Best part about it was Deebo and Kittle simply ran over all the would-be tacklers for at least 50 extra yards after initial contact. Very fun stuff. Ronnie Bell had a nice game replacing Brandon Aiyuk as he caught the first TD on a real nice deep out route to the pylon. Deebo had the other deep back shoulder fade TD after Purdy came out a little rattled by the early pressure. Still and all, 25/37 for 311, 2 TDs and no picks is stellar work as the Giants sacked Purdy twice, and blitzed on 33 of the 39 pass attempts. So, the O line gets kudos keeping Purdy relatively clean among all the pressure, and they even ran for 141 as CMC ran for 85 and the forgotten Elijah Mitchell got in some solid action and ran for 42.

The defense was solid as usual. Nick Bosa got a gift sack, likely the easiest one of his career as the Giants simply left him unblocked and Jones rolled right into his path. The only glitch was the special teams as the Niners got a holding call on a punt return, got stuck in their end zone, and interfered with a fair catch, giving the Giants the ball on our 35. Breida the cheetah scored their only TD.

Sure, the score should have been more lopsided as the 441 to 150 yards and 40:00 to 20:00 TOP would indicate, but it is good to see the 49ers can play nasty in the trenches smash-mouth football and kick some ass like the NFC East seems to think is their purview.

Bring on the Cowboys and the Eagles.

3-0.

Per Lindsey Pallares, San Francisco’s injury list is wide receiver Deebo Samuel (ribs), and linebackers Dre Greenlaw (ankle) and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (ankle).

Good news is all three injuries appear to be minor with Shanahan listing the trio of players as day-to-day headed into the long weekend.

    Successful draft or not?

    2021
Round 1, pick 3 – Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State
    R 2, 48 (from LV) – Aaron Banks, G, Notre Dame
R 3, 88 (from LAR) – Trey Sermon, RB, Ohio St
    R 3, 102 – Ambry Thomas, CB, Michigan
    R 5, 155 – Jaylon Moore, OG, Western Michigan
    R 5, 172 – Deommodore Lenoir, CB, Oregon
    R 5, 180 – Talanoa Hufanga, S, USC
    R 6, 194 – Elijah Mitchell, RB, Louisiana

Throw out Sermon and Lance and all the rest are major contributors. Well, Moore is iffy but the rest are solid.

Drafts in general with Lynchahan have been sad high and miserable in RD3.
Moody’s selection as a 3rd K might be the 1st successful Pick of the regime.

Starting to think they did themselves a favor throwing away the multiple 1’s on Lance in hindsight.

7 first round picks from 2017 to 2021 and they got 2 impact guys. Bosa and Aiyuk. The rest are gone or busts. Kinlaw is on the edge with Solly Thomas as being picked way too high. But the bottom half of their drafts is fairly excellent. With Purdy being the craziest. And Shanahan and Lynch both got contract extensions this week.

I did this breakdown of Shanalynch’s drafts here a while back. The only change from then is adding Moody to the 3rd round.

The 5th round is their best.

1st round pick starters – 2 – Bosa, Aiyuk (McGlinchey starting for Denver)
    2nd round pick starters – 2 – Banks, Deebo
    3rd round pick starters – 2 – Warner, Moody
    4th round pick starters – 2 – Burford, Wishnowski
5th round pick starters – 5 – Kittle, McKivitz, Greenlaw, Hufanga, Lenoir (honorable mention DJ Reed)
    6th round pick starters – 1 – Mitchell
7th round pick starters – 1 – Purdy (honorable mention to Jauan Jennings, DJ Jones)

Not to mention all the UDFA RBs like Brieda, Mostert, and Mason

Easy to say the 1st step is keeping Shanny out of war room for RD3 and never accept his input on a RB.

Like Lynch’s approach to stacking the Defense.
Just gotta keep him from reaching early.

The way we’ve drafted with the current FO it might just be a good idea to package our low rd picks for the later rd’s. Moody does look like the real deal and that makes it one of our better picks ever. Hoping we can clean up many of the mistakes we make as the games go along. If we do I believe we have the machine in place to play like we did in ’94.’

Drake Jackson in RD2 is looking like a find also.
He hit the rookie wall hard last year.
Hopefully his conditioning is up to NFL par now.

This year we spent 3 Picks in the 3rd RD.
    Tig Brown, Moody and Latu.

Hope we hit the trifecta and break the curse 😁

Dallas is burning clock as they let the game slip away. McCarthy is not paying attention.
