Game III – Thursday Night Home Opener

Here we go with the nightmare that is Thursday night. For all the posturing by the league office, Thursday night football is up there as one of the most injury-causing things out there in the game. Football isn’t easy under the best of circumstances, but cutting 3 days out of the recovery time needed by these players, and putting them into the fray is counter to any health related benefits the NFL is trying to tout.

But hey, I guess it is better to get it over with early. Oh yeah, we play on Thanksgiving as well. Somewhere along the way, the league decided it would be perfectly fine to let teams play twice on Thursday per per year. So, we get doubly fucked by the league in the name of money. Ask any player how they feel about Thursday football and they will tell you they hate it.

To make things even worse, due to the plethora of shitty Thursday games last year (and there were a ton), the league wants to be able to flex in games of their choice, thus making things even more difficult on the players, let alone the crews that broadcast these games.

Jolly Roger is a fucking whore.

But anyway, back to football. The main reason I’m worried about this game is the same reason all the teams playing on Thursday are. You never know how your players are going to react when given the short recovery time. And the injury factor goes way up without the 3 days of rest taken away.

On that front, Brandon Aiyuk had a scare on his first catch of the Rams game as he thought he broke his clavicle, but the MRI came back negative. He was hurting throughout the game and missed some plays, but he gutted it out. He didn’t practice yesterday, so his status remains day-to-day. Since it isn’t a break, I guess he isn’t at risk for further injury, but we’ll see how the team plays it.

But this should be a good game for Brock Purdy to bounce back from his fairly wobbly game. I say that even though he did a great job avoiding pressure, did not force passes into traffic, or come close to throwing any picks. Ball security is a very important deal, and as we saw vs the Rams, it turned the game in our favor.

And, if you give a shit, here’s the unis the Niners will be sporting Thursday night. Better than those all-black impossible-to-read-the-numbers ones. Our 90s/50s throwbacks.

    Got to keep rolling

Even thoIugh it’s a game I can watch I hate or us to play on Thursday. I have a feeling we will see a lot more of our backups this game. Mitchell should play some snaps and it wouldn’t surprise me to see a lot of Ray Ray and Jennings. I think we kind of overlooked the Rams in the 1st half and were not ready for their lines. Hopefully last week was a wake up call. We should take these guys by at least two td’s.

I heard Shanahan say after the Ram game that he ‘forgot’ about using Mitchell, which really struck me as being a flat weird comment. 20 carries isn’t outlandish for CMC, but all I heard this offseason was how they would protect CMC against overuse and injury by spelling him. Well, he was still in the 4th quarter of a blowout game, and Mitchell got 0 carries in the Ram game.

I sure hope Mitchell gets a lot of reps Thursday night.

I’d like to see us work on their LB group. Kittle and Jennings should get some reps for this one.
Their CBs don’t impress me in the tackling dept either.

The Giants look like a team that had a soft schedule last year and parlayed that into a playoff appearance. How Minnesota lost that playoff game is beyond me, but the Vikings are another team that never gets out of their own way no matter how hard they try.

The Giants defense was pretty awful last year, esp their LBs like NJ mentioned, so we should be able to hit a lot of mid-range stuff. Our wheelhouse. Then again, Wink Martindale likes to blitz a lot, so we at least have to get passes off quickly.

Their run defense is pretty porous so we should be able to keep their aggressiveness at bay by keeping them honest with our run game.

There are no easy games in the NFL, but we should be able to put this one away early. The big X factor of course is the short prep time. Then again, at least we don’t lose a day to travel like the Giants are.

I’m not a fan of the Thursday game from a player health perspective but as a football fan if I’m honest I like not having to wait until Sunday to see a game and at least both teams played last Sunday. It’s a bit harder on NYG for having to travel.
There was some fight in them with the comeback win over the Cardinals so maybe it’s not the lay up we all thought it was after their huge week 1 loss.

Having said all of that Niners 37-14

About the only thing Daniel Jones brings is his running ability. Something the 49ers can struggle with. Since Barkley’s out, I foresee a huge amount of read-options and designed runs from Jones. His numbers are terrible when he plays without Barkley in the backfield.

The SF 49ers are going to DESTROY the NY Giants!the Giants are the ONLY team in football without a turnover on defense 0 sacks,0 interceptions, 0 fumble recoveries and without Barkley 0 chance.. Niners roll 44-10!!
I even added K Jake Moody to my FF team to continue padding to his perfect season start including that 57 yarder as he’s ranked #2 among all FG kickers!

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Hope so. Thursday night games are a crapshoot at times.

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Brandon Aiyuk was limited in practice these last couple days, but he’s questionable.

Which means he prolly plays. Just hope they don’t overuse him.

  11. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

    Shanny goes conservative too much.
If he sits Aiyuk tonight, take the points.
    Vegas owns this shit.

  12. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

It gets pretty obvious sometimes. Watching the Saints Carolina game when NO went up 20-9 with 2:30 left, I was guaranteeing that the Saints would let Carolina score AND get the 2 pt conversion to hit the 3 point spread on the nose, thus Vegas won ALL the bets made on the push.

Same thing happened due to the last-second FG in the 49er game. It allowed LA to cover. I’m in a pick ’em league this year and that killed both my games.

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Aiyuk ‘likely’ out for tonight’s game.

  14. Winder's avatar Winder says:

I just hope we don’t overlook these guys like we did Atlanta last year. I would like to see a good clean game.

  15. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

I thinkSean McVay should be investigated by the league on that useless FG that pissed off a lot of bettors in Vegas and everywhere else. The spread was 7/7.5 push are losers for most.McVay probably had family members/ friends to cover? No reason to kick that FG other then $$$$ involved..

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

The pisser was the saints game. I KNEW the Saints were gonna let the Panthers score, and convert the 2 to hit the spread, thus making the game a push, so ALL bettors lost.

  16. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yep. Hit them early. put them away.

  17. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

With Aiyuk out I’m expecting Jennings and maybe Bell getting looks tonight. And I expect a heavy dose of Elijah Mitchell tonight CMC needs a breather so if their blowing them out then Mitchell gets the 4th quarter and maybe Mason a few plays..

  18. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

    Scary thought…
Mitchell coughs it up and kills momentum.
Shanny scares me more than Vegas does.

  19. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Purdy is throwing some pretty wild balls. He has to calm down

  20. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

You can only hold back the Niners D for so long. How was that not a safety

  21. Berger's avatar Berger says:

It looks like Purdy has the post Tommy John surgery, just a little off, syndrome.

  22. Winder's avatar Winder says:

    I hate sloppy football.
