Gutty Win vs the Surprising Rams

Crazy game that was hard-fought and very much in play down the stretch. I have to say, I REALLY didn’t see the Rams playing this tough. The lost a ton of talent, and picked up a bunch of draft picks, and they came up with a very hungry young team that did a hell of a job on their O line. We are supposedly the cream of the crop with our base 4 man rush, but for the entire 1st half, the Niners did nothing against their pas rush, and LA played our game of quick passes and runs inside.

If not for our late TD on the last play in the 1st half, the 49ers would have been down 7. As it was, the Niners offense did well enough to tie the score after taking the opening kickoff all the way for a touchdown, and watching LA turn a 10-3 deficit into a 17-10 lead.

The 2nd half saw the 49ers, and Wilks in particular, dial up the pressure on defense, and force a ouple Matthew Stafford specials and put the game away 30-23.

For this being this tough a game, we came away pretty unscathed, Deebo and Aiyuk both had stellar games amid being battered and bruised in the process. I’m hoping they aren’t too hurt. Mainly because we have the quick Turnaround tThursday night game agaisnt the NY football Giants. Who somehow overcame a 28-14 4th quarter deficit to beat the game but hapoless AZ Cards.

It was a bit concerning that LA had their way running and throwing on our defense most of the game, but they beat up on what I think is a pretty good Seattle team as well. Still hard to tell who is what in this new NFL season, but the Rams suddenly look like a pretty solid team.

Still and all, opening 2-0 on the road is a good start for the 49ers.

Get our home opener on Thursday. Onward and upward.

Yeah I didn’t see the Rams offense doing what they did. But give the DC create he made adjustments. Auiyuk looked the more beat up. Hope the shoulder isn’t too bad

I thought in the first half, the LBs were giving the underneath and the Rams took it. In the 2nd half, the LBs were closer to the LOS, forcing Stafford to hold the ball a tick longer. I think that keeping the D-line fresh started showing in the 2nd half.

      Agree Berger.
Thought they gave up too much room early and adjusted well as the game went on.
Take a Division W anytime you can get it, even if they got a little cocky with the home red in the enemy camp.
I’ve bought road whites for years simply because I’m a road 9er 😀

I’m glad the Rams aren’t pushovers this year just as long as we beat em. Seattle played a good game today also. I think we will have our work cut out for us just about every game. I like it when our division plays tough.

We had our hands full with Puka Nacua to put it simply.
    Lose Cooper Kupp, find Puka.
Rams didn’t miss a beat in that regard.

Brock did miss several big plays but, that’s correctable.
A W is a W in the Division and we can hang our hat on that.
NYG may have lost Barkley for awhile so there’s that in our favor.
They hung a loss on Arizona for us at least.

    One game at a time…

Two good road wins and more importantly a division win. Bring on the 1-1 Giants on Thursday nights home opener!

Tim Ryan was on KNBR, he says Purdys throws deep can be corrected, and it is better to miss deep than short, greater chance of in INT on too short of a pass

Yeah, Purdy’s misses, while bad, were not as bad as them getting picked off. Rewatching the game and yeah, Oliver and Greenlaw came in a step to try and cut off those short routes. Warner’s blitz was the drive killer on 3rd down. Stafford was a lot less accurate after the sack. Game was a much bigger struggle than I thought it would be.

Likely to see our old friend Matt Breida Thursday night to get some work in in Barkley’s expected absence.
Focus on the GMen and don’t give them a chance to breathe.

A wounded team is now feeling better about themselves thanks to AZ taking them lightly.

  9. Berger's avatar Berger says:

Even though those deep passes were overthrown, they still made the safeties play a little deeper. The one that miffed me was when Purdy missed the slant on 3rd down. Like Sanchez pointed out, it was bad footwork. The toe needs to point at the target. I thought Deebo would have taken that to the house. He would’ve at least got major yards.

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, that was a crucial part of the game as well. He missed that one badly. Definitely not Purdy’s best showing, but he still got the job done. With a little help from Deebo, Aiyuk, and CMC.

D line looks slow getting off the ball. Even with all the rotating to keep guys fresh, it took a long time to generate our pass rush and slow down their run game.

The Rams outgained us 386 to 365, out TOPed us 33:00 to 27:00, and outpassed us 297 to 206.

All about the turnovers. Got to give the Rams credit for their line play, though. If not for the last second TD to close the half, this game coulda very well been a loss. Itell you one thing, I REALLY like seeing Warner getting blitzes. He was doing major damage every time they sent him. And I saw in rewatching, Kinlaw had a tipped pass to his credit. And Drake had one early as well.

Again though, better to win these sloppy games than to lose them.

Hope Purdy has a nice bounceback game.

These games tonight are wild. Pittsburgh and Cleve are killing each other out there. Shame about Chubb. Another brutal injury on MNF.

  12. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I tell ya, it’s uncanny how the Niner game ends with a meaningless FG to allow the Rams to cover, and the Saints just let Carolina cruise down the field and score 2 to allow the bet lose for both sides.

Jesus. This Browns/Steelers game is nuts.

Cleveland has given this game away about 7 times. And they still might win.

Looks like the simple adjustment on Sunday was going from zone to man by Wilks.

Good stuff. That extra second that forced Stafford to hold the ball made a difference.
