So Much for That – Preseason Ends on a Weird Note

Color me shocked. Stupefied even. The original trade in the would get a lot of GMs fired. Then stringing him along and dumping him for a 4th round pick is a bit more wild. Their saving grace, as it is with most all of their late round picks, is the drafting of Brock Purdy. The guy coming odd a major arm reconstruction.

That the Cowboys picked him up is a huge fuck you to the ghost of Niners past. They are getting an unknown quantity for nothing. One that we bet the farm on. I was convinced they’d simply sit on him until needed, or the season ended. It’s not like we beefed up the line any.

Oh well. I’m sure there are a lot of pissed off fans out there who will instantly vilify Lance, but none of this was his doing. Shanahan is the mastermind of this debacle. He dicked around with Lance even before he was drafted. Hinting he wanted Jones, waffling on Fields, and now dumping him for peanuts. Throw in running him into the line 3 times in the 1st quarter of his 2nd game, and boom. Season-ending injury.

This WILL bite him in the ass at some point.

And even more good news. Continuing Shanny’s folly in the 3rd round, our kicker is out with a pulled quad. Our kicker. Our rookie kicker. This training staff has to be the worst in the league. Can they keep the waterboy healthy?

I will never forget how disappointed I was when we made the trade to move up to 3. I’ll never forget how pissed I was when we drafted Lance. It was the maddest I have ever been over a 49er pick. I knew he wasn’t worth the assets given for him. Still, I rooted for him, until a half hour ago. Now, I’m actually disappointed he was traded. It shows we failed in picking him in the first place.

He had his chances. He decided to run the ball instead of passing and broke his ankle. Mainly because he was too slow to process the passing game. It is exactly what I saw on college video. Some people, fans and coaches alike, get so excited about a QB who can run, they forget that a QB actually has to process a passing game.

It shows they valued Brandon Allen over Lance and did not want to take the chance of losing Allen.

  3. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I read on 49ers Webzone that we unloaded over 6 million in fully guaranteed money that was in his contract. Maybe they did third to sign Bosa?

I wanted Fields but his assessment is still incomplete.

Lance goes down as an all time terrible 49er pick but I do give cudos to Shannahan and Lynch for owning it and moving on. Both those guys will always wear it.

Cowboys is an odd destination for Lance, they have an established 1 and 2 so he’s looking at being a 3rd stringer, don’t see how he improves himself there but whatever, he’s their headache now.

    Game night!

  5. NJ49ER's avatar NJ49ER says:

Look at it as cutting their losses.
Money off the books to pay Bosa makes the best case scenario for me.
Never saw Lance as Mahomes as Shanny apparently did.
    More, Kaep 2.0 IMO

  6. Winder's avatar Winder says:

I still don’t like it Lance is only 23 years old. Fuck it.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    I’m with ya, Winder.

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Where’s Gonzalez? Why is Wishmisski kicking extra points?

  9. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

Chuck, they made a terrible trade. Then Shanny got a look at Lance up close for 2 years. They traded him to Dallas because they know he sucks. Come on, how are you not seeing this? They traded him to the fucking COWBOYS!!! LOL. Lance will never do anything in the NFL

  10. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Both the FG kickers out Mooney quad then Gonzalez with a calf pull warming up wtf? Wishamiss no way can he kick Jack which we witnessed he’s barely punting well.Where’s Old man Gould doing?

  11. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Well watching Sam D, don’t see that he is better than Trey. This looks like a salary dump for Bosa. But I agree with Berger, Trey still has not learned how to read defenses

If you can’t see the difference between Darnold and Lance, I don’t know what to say. There’s a world of difference between the two. Darnold will be perfectly serviceable backing up Purdy. Lance would not have been, certainly not playing against first-team defenses.

  12. Winder's avatar Winder says:

This one is for the FO

  13. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Whether Lance makes it or not I don’t like the way we did this. This makes our FO look like a bunch of clowns. If he would have gone just about anywhere besides fucking Dallas I would be rooting for him. I have a real bad feeling that we aren’t going anywhere this year.

    • barleyfreak's avatar barleyfreak says:

You think that little of Purdy? We made a very poor gamble in Lance. I don’t think he has it. Losses. Cut.

We lucked out the moon in Purdy. He will make mistakes, but he is a gamer. I am more worried about our D right now than our offense. Especially the run. But without the starters, wtf knows.

I am not wowed by Darnold. But I wasn’t remotely with Lance, no matter how much I wanted to be.

We will be in the mix. Looking forward to it.

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Why would you think I don’t like Purdy. At the moment I think he’s the best thing since sliced bread. I was totally talking about Lance and our FO. I’m not sure that Darnold will even be here next year. My guess is he’s gonna go for the best money

  14. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Well even though Lance told Shanahan I want to be traded to a team to compete for the #2 job I don’t see that happening. No way with Dak Prescott #1 and Cooper Rush a solid #2.
He will get to be #3 as the Cowboys have said #3 Will Grier will not make the team after acquiring Lance.

  15. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Fuck, Latu is going on IR, we just can’t get a fucking break on injuries.

  16. Winder's avatar Winder says:

It took a couple of days but now realize dumping Lance was probably the best move for everyone involved. I was just too mad at the FO for the way they handled the whole situation. Hopefully we can keep Purdy upright because if we can’t we are through. Sad to loose Latu he was focused a lot this preseason hopefully we get him back sometime this year because if Kittle goes down and you know he will at some point we will have Dwelley and Woener. Still all in all lost a lot of faith in our FO.

    • 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

I see it the same way Kevin. Bad injury luck and his inability to progress reading defenses did him in. Once Darnold clearly was better, then Lance needed to go. At least they got a 4th and his money off the books. Times ticking on Bosa and they have a little more room now.

  17. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

I hate social media, the way some people act as. If the Niners are the only team that has done a bad pick.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

A lot of the media feeds into that. Yeah we made a big mistake but we are still a real good team. I think a lot of people are jealous about that.

  18. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Cut down day and the Turk cometh!

  19. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

They kept QB Allen on the 53, given the QB attrition rate in Shanahan’s scheme I’m not surprised. Allen also played decently in practice and plays similar to Purdy and Darnold which is a plus for a 3rd string guy.

  20. Berger's avatar Berger says:

Glad to see they kept Kalia Davis. We took an injury chance on him last year thinking that he can became a stout run stuffer. I haven’t seen much of him. I hope this means he is what they thought he was.
