Pre-Season Game Deux – Horsing Around

Well, here we are at Game II of the exciting preseason shitstorm that is the 49ers QB situation. Reports are Purdy is either ‘likely’ or ‘not likely’ to play tomorrow, because you can’t tip off the opponent regarding who will play. In a preseason game. And you can’t garner enough leadlines around who will be where in the pecking order. This team is becoming the Dallas Cowboys West what with all the garish headlines around Darnold and Lance. And even Brandon Allen.

As of now, it sure looks like Darnold is the provisional #2, and he probably gets the start tomorrow. There’s talk of playing some starters as well. Lance will bring up the rear and play the Walmart brigade in the 2nd half. If he can’t play well against them, then there really is trouble on his horizon.

Granted, I’m not one for conspiracies, but it sure looks (a little) like Shanny is paving the way for Darnold to be successful and for Lance to not. I guess we’ll see who’s playing on the line tomorrow, but if the starters get a few series’s’s, then it’s already a little tilted in Darnold’s direction. And I wonder if Shanny will tart Darnold with 9 straight passes to start the game.

And it’s hard not to avoid the scrolls as Grant Cohn sez “after stinking up the joint, Lance has his best practice of the preseason” as everyone else takes turns shitting on the kid. I feel bad for Lance, as he’s had an even more fucked up start to his career than Alex Smith. People are coming out of the walls to take their shot at him. Where it goes from here, we all get to watch. I hope it all goes well, but your guess is as good as mine what the outcome is.

Per Maiocco from 45 minute ago, there’s still no decision on the starters for tomorrow’s game.

More just big edge in experience, in college and pros, Darnold has. Little wonder he has better grasp of things. As you said Unc, Shanahan does have history of not being able to keep his QBs healthy.

    Check out this Sly:

Saw them when they were playing with Peter Tosh.

I think they played with Steel Pulse for a while. If you haven’t heard Earth Crisis, check it out. Great album.

I know they played with Black Uhuru. Not sure about Eeek A Mouse.

Fun stuff. I think the show was Yellowman, Eeek A Mouse and Black Uhuru at the Berkeley Civic.

Did you mention Peter Tosh! My favorite version of Johnny B Goode. It’s like Reggae blues.

I would like to make another comment about Trey Lance. I do think it is possible he goes down as the biggest bust in NFL history, but I am not predicting that. I do think he will never show that he is worth 3 first round picks, but what I saw from him on Sunday showed vast improvement from previous years.

His form was much better, and he was making progressions. He needed to get the ball out. I do believe that will come. He’s going to need to take some chances and even throw some interceptions in practice to learn what he can and can’t get away with.

I don’t think he will ever be a fast processor, but I do see him becoming serviceable. Steve McNair was a slow processor who became a decent starter. Lance, with his athleticism can overcome some other issues. I do see him sticking in the league for a while as a journeyman who will get some chances.

With the improvement I have seen so far, I think there could be an outside chance that he has some kind of epiphany and just starts getting ‘it’. I love his attitude, which makes me want him to succeed.

It’s a tough spot for Lance. For various reasons he hasn’t been able to showcase whatever his abilities actually are and he is just about out of time to do it. I honestly don’t know what more we have really learned about Lance than the day he was drafted.

I had him 3rd on the depth chart this year because Purdy did his thing last year, Darnold has 55 starts and as a back up experience counts and because I think he would do very well on this team and Lance 3rd because he hasn’t proven himself yet. So far it looks like Darnold has beaten out Lance and that decision has to be made soon from a reps perspective now that Purdy is full go with the ones.

I do think a trade is possible but not likely. It comes down to the offer and whether they see Allen as a viable 3rd option. I don’t see the $5 mil dead money as that big of a deal if the draft pick they get is mid round, that has monetary value.

I agree with Berger that Lance hasny been processing fast enough but I also don’t see this elite athletic ability people talk about but again it’s such a small sample size.

Is he a bust? Still too soon to say but I do say he definately wasn’t worth all those pics. On the other hand Purdy was the steal of the draft for what he did last year, hopefully that continues.

Late to the party, great music guys. I think all Lance needs is a little confidence and he will be fine. I hope he is tuning out most of the bullshit that’s being said about him. At this point I am still not reading anything in this game. It wouldn’t surprise me if we did start with 9 or 10 passes. Next to QB injuries our RB’s seem to be a close second. Our run game is far too important to use it too much for a game like this. I guess our oline needs the run reps though. Anyway WDIK. I hope the penalties will be at a minimum but not holding my breath.

Nice crisp passing job for Purdy 4-5 65 yards good to see Shanny’opening it with passes to see how Purdy reacts, well just fine with 2 nice gains by Deebo&Ayiuk.Bronco’s stiffened at the goal line so no TD, but atleast Moody made a chip shot he better have..

Once Lance hit Latu on 3rd and 12 he seemed to settle down. And he trusted the blocking a little more in order to get that TD pass off. With time to look off the safety.

Encouraging. He hit a couple tight windows and his one nice scramble was called back for a hold.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Yeah, I don’t believe he’s ever felt comfortable yet. He needs to play and whether he’s either qb 1 or 2 he should see the field quite a bit this year. It was a good sign that Latu didn’t drop the ball since I think he’s has as many drops as completions. Didn’t like seeing the missed extra point and the stupid penalties but was still a much better game this go round.

  11. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Meant to say qb 2 or 3

  12. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Lance proved to me he’s #2 just off his ability to improvise working with 3-4 stringers on the OL who were overmatched and the hold penalties he had to overcome looking at 1st and 20 is no fun.
After his 1st series a tipped int,he was on point with accurate throws hitting on 8 out of 9 and leading them to 3 straight drives for points.
And what was dumbshit Ayiuk doing in streetclothes running on the field to celebrate Lance beautiful throw to Latu for the TD and costing them a easy chance to tie it up from the 2.But nooo his 15 yard penalty pushed them back
to the 17 no chance to tie it up 20-20 from there. But even then after holding Broncos,Lance did the job 2 big throws to Bell( bye bye Gray)and one to Latu setting up Shaky Moody for the GW..
Total shit game for Niners too many penalties, special teams awful, punt returner fumbled one away for easy score, and the punter?? Wtf 😳 he shanked his 1st 2 punts!!!

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

It’s preseason for fuck’s sake. Aiyuk can do backflips down the field for all I care. Like Shanny said, it set up the win nicely. And Moody barely squinked that one in.

Fucking McVay didn’t draw a penalty in the NFC playoff game celebrating in the end zone against us last year. Fuck the NFL for their selective enforcement.

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

All I’ll say is I’m glad they are fucking up wildly now in the preseason. Get the crap out of their system now.

The hope is Moody kicks straighter, Wishnowski punts straighter, we stop with the stupid penalties, and roll a little smoother. once we hit Pittsburgh.

As always, we are our won worst enemy. We should be the top seed this time around.
