The Usual Power Rankings Blather – QB Edition

These stupid ranking systems are as useful as the ether they are printed on, but this is pretty funny. No love for the 49ers Brock Purdy despite his strong showing coming off the bench as the 3rd string QB to lead the 49ers to (almost) the promised land.

Deshaun Watson had a horrible season, and hasn’t played well in 3 seasons, yet comes in as a Tier 2 guy. Cousins and Murray ahead of Purdy?? Please. Rogers is a Tier 1? Based 3 years ago? He sucked shit through a tube last year.

I added Tier 5 as the Athletic left the last two guys off.

Tier 1

A Tier 1 quarterback can carry his team each week. The team wins because of him. He expertly handles pure passing situations. He has no real holes in his game.

1 Patrick Mahomes Chiefs
2 Joe Burrow Bengals
3 Josh Allen Bills
4 Aaron Rodgers Jets
5 Justin Herbert Chargers

Tier 2

A Tier 2 quarterback can carry his team sometimes but not as consistently. He can handle pure passing situations in doses and/or possesses other dimensions that are special enough to elevate him above Tier 3. He has a hole or two in his game.

6 Jalen Hurts Eagles
7 Lamar Jackson Ravens
8 Trevor Lawrence Jaguars
9 Dak Prescott Cowboys
10 Matthew Stafford Rams
11 Deshaun Watson Browns
12 Kirk Cousins Vikings

Tier 3

A Tier 3 quarterback is a legitimate starter but needs a heavier running game and/or defensive component to win. A lower-volume dropback passing offense suits him best.

13 Kyler Murray Cardinals
14 Derek Carr Saints
15 Jared Goff Lions
16 Russell Wilson Broncos
17 Tua Tagovailoa Dolphins
18 Jimmy Garoppolo Raiders
19 Daniel Jones Giants
20 Geno Smith Seahawks
21 Justin Fields Bears
22 Ryan Tannehill Titans
23 Mac Jones Patriots

Tier 4

A Tier 4 quarterback could be an unproven player (not enough information for voters to classify) or a veteran who ideally would not start all 17 games.

24 Brock Purdy 49ers
25 Kenny Pickett Steelers
26 Jordan Love Packers
27 Baker Mayfield Buccaneers
28 Sam Howell Commanders
29 Desmond Ridder Falcons
30 Gardner Minshew Colts

Tier 5

A Tier 5 quarterback that sucks balls all day and twice on Sunday. Or a rookie.

31 CJ Stroud Texans
32 Bryce Young Panthers

Bears use outside zone also so this scouts thoughts on OL make this a good read.

We can bitch about what if on the draft capital wreck with the Lance draft trade but now there is a reprise of that via the sainted new HC of Houston DeMeco Ryan’s.

After Stroud they gave up big draft capital on a non-qb to move up to #3 for edge Will Anderson.

  3. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Frankly, if they have their starter for the next 10 years in Purdy, the Lance trade hurts a lot less. This team is pretty miserable at their top picks anyway.

Of their seven 1st round picks, only Bosa and Aiyuk are impact players. Lance is the big unknown, but Foster, Thomas, and McGlinchey are gone, and Kinlaw is entering his 4th season and still trying to get on the field. The 2s are about the same. Jackson had an iffy rookie year, Pettis was a washout. Banks is the real deal. Deebo as well. We traded away the rest.

  4. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Jimmy Ward turned out well while here but past his prime.

We need OT studs at the top of next year’s draft. Another reason for a full draft is to bring down the salary cap.

  5. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

I had hoped Nick Zakelj would be a young Alex Mack. Same size, football IQ, and RAS score at the top for rookie C.

But the Brendel package told a different story. Does he have what it takes to be our RT.

We do have excellent coaching to develop these day 3 picks.

  6. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Baring to many serious injuries I believe we will be fine. With Williams age we should prioritize online next draft but we probably won’t. The FO must see something in the unproven guys that we don’t know. And, with the team we now have we will probably be drafting somewhere in the last 1-5 spots. At least we have a full arsenal of picks

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Tell ya one thing, the Giants sure shit the bed come the trade deadline. The Niners, after possibly squandering the picks on Lance, went hard after CMC and it paid off big time. Can’t say the Niners front office isn’t nutting up.

  8. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

With our own pick late in each round to get a decent tackle may need to bundle picks or a player. Just like their ability to identify talent from the smaller schools.

    By any means necessary.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    Hey now.

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Not that we were counting on him for much, but . . .

Jaylon Moore carted off the field with a knee injury.

Been harping on line depth all offseason.

  11. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Another stubbed toe on the shanalynch drafting history is the Jalen Hurd pick. At end of 2nd rd Seattle took dk Metcalf. We were looking receiver. Why didn’t we jump up a few spots and get him. Instead they waited a few picks and got their man , the always injured hurd.

  12. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

It was McGlinchey who kept pestering shanalynch to take banks, his notre dame linemate.

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Hurd just retired . . . No actual playing time in 4 seasons. Unreal.

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Where did Coleman go? Seemed like a decent backup.

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

All in all a good day for the quarterbacks yesterday. Still no word on Bosa.

    Purdy 27 snaps 12-15
    Darnold 18 snaps 8-10
    Lance 18 snaps 9-11
    Allen 6 snaps 1-3

  16. Berger's avatar Berger says:

When all was said and done with the 2023 draft, we gave up a lot of those picks for CMC. Not including CMC in our draft grade is an opinion not worth reading, IMO. Those picks have to be accounted for.

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Frankly I couldn’t give more of a shit. If CMC stays upright and Brown works out. Moody is gravy. We weren’t gonna pay Gould.

    • Berger's avatar Berger says:

You sure spend a lot of time writing about power rankings and ratings to not give a shit. I don’t give a shit either. I’m just calling out the, so called, ‘experts’ for being amateurs. Those picks must be accounted for.

      • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Similar to this year’s draft day trade when Chicago got picks plus a WR1 for the #1 pick on a short QB Bryce Young.

Justin Fields may not be rated highly in the end but he enabled this rape of the Panthers.

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Hey, it’s not even fucking preseason yet. What else is there to talk about? How the team did or didn’t celebrate Trey Lance’s birthday?

For all the picks we traded away for Lance and CMC, the team sure doesn’t seem to be affected by it much. And they will have a more than a shitload of picks next season. Not sure why those 3 picks for CMC are such a big deal. They’ve blown more than their fair share of 1st round picks in their tenure.

  19. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Reading the Bosa deal is 168m through 2028

  20. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Pay him $175m for 5 and be done with it.

  21. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Mitchel is hurt again out for 7-10 days. Same problem as last year.

  22. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, saw that. Between Mitchell and Mostert and Brieda, they just can’t stay on the field. Mason will turn out to be the guy they lean on in the run game to back up CMC. I hope TDP isn’t yet another wasted 3rd round pick. Lots of glowing reports out of camp, but that it worth the ether it is printed on.

  23. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, we’ll see. They said the same thing about Sermon last year. But with Mitchell down for the count again, it looks like TDP stays.

    New thread is up.
