Well, not really. There’s a book out there called The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell. Written by a high school friend of mine, Bob Dugoni. But I digress. And I should read it. Sounds good.
Darnold? My only take on him is, if it comes to the point where Darnold passes Lance on the depth chart, then Lance is basically a throw-away. He has been in the system more than long enough to grasp its intricacies and know how to run the team. Sure, it was disconcerting when Purdy came in and ran it to perfection, but was that Jimmy G’s offense? Surely Shanahan isn’t going to run the same offense for both guys is he? Should he?
What exactly was Shanahan trying to do with Lance for those 5.25 quarters? Break him? Sure, the Chicago game was pretty much a washout, but the Seattle game saw Lance running read-option plays. Plays that Shanahan said he wouldn’t use. He said the season before that he would not use Lance like Lamar Jackson, but he went out and did it anyway. And it got Lance hurt. THREE read-option runs up the gut in the first fucking quarter is pretty stupid no matter how you slice it.
Of course Jimmy G comes in and saves the day! Posting a nice victory over the hated Seahawks that fateful day. Then again, GQ shit the bed against our once and future nemesis, Russell Wilson and the worst goddamn team in the NFL, the Denver Phillies. But fuck that. I digress again.
My conundrum here is the quarterback situation. Lance SHOULD be running the same system as Purdy and Jimmy G, and presumably Sam Fucking Darnold. He of the high draft spot and failed expectations. His numbers are shit, and as he’s gone through the Jets (abysmal) and the Panthers (fair-to-middling), but really, he hasn’t really gotten any better. In his words he was looking for a stable organization to learn from the coaches and players, yadda yadda yadda, and I get that both the Jets (especially the 2018-2019 versions) and the Panthers were absolute shitshows, but he hasn’t shown squat so far. But can Kyle the quarterback whisperer do something with Darnold? I don’t even want to find out.
This team has gone through more quarterbacks than shit goes through a goose. They even changed the rules around suiting up QBs. Now allowing 3 per game without the penalty of whatever the idiotic reasoning is for allowing only 48 guys to suit up on game day as part of the 53 man roster. You’d think with all the attrition in ANY given game, they’d allow all 53 to be active. Fucking dumb.
But we haven’t really done anything to beef up the line. In fact it got worse with Brunskill leaving. I sure hope McGlinchey is bested by McKivitz’s game, because we haven’t added any depth, We are hoping against hope that our past low-level picks step up.
*gulp*
Between this and the ghost haunting George Kittle’s pool house, you got to wonder if this guy has his head on straight.

I like that Darnold has the ability to throw the long ball. I think he was delt a really fucked up hand in going to the Jets. I forgot the HC’s name I think it was gase who like so many HC’s thought he knew best. He was as useless as a mud fence. And the situation in Caro was almost just as bad I think they fired one HC midterm and threw someone in there as a stopgap. l would like to see what he can do. I am rooting for him. I am also rooting for Lance to shine. I think Purdy should be our starter but with our fucking injury history we might need a fourth.
I was very happy when we did not hire Gase. I got roasted on the 49er blogs for my opinion. I used to get roasted often! LOL!
Yeah, that was Adam Gase. People were clamoring for him back in the day when we got Shanahan. or maybe even earlier. He coached under Martz that one Shaun Hill clusterfuck season. He’s a total washout. He went 32-48 as a head coach, and 9-23 with the Jets.
Then again, both those organizations were clusterfucks from top to bottom. If Darnold can help, hey, more power to him. He has been in a lot of shit sandwiches, and he himself said he was looking for a stable situation.
This is as good as it gets. Buty I keep going back to building the O line. Shanahan never seems to put a high priority on that. I mean, he wastes high picks on RBs that crash & burn as the UDFAs shine. Draft some fucking linemen, for fuck’s sake.
Always liked Darnold at USC and he has had no end of HC and OC change year after year. Of the qb’s on the current roster he has the best skillet IMO. With this cast and scheme he just might be the best of the bunch.
I loved what Purdy did last year but still lots of questions for him, like sophomore slump? Defenses have a lot of film and an off-season to take away what he does best so does he have another gear? Not to mention can he come back from the injury with good accuracy and strength, will he get the yips and so on.
Best thing I can say about Lance is we still don’t know what he can do. The few times he’s played he sometimes doesn’t see the open guy and he can be inaccurate. I read he’s been working on his mechanics and footwork but until we see him in game action nobody knows if he can really operate the system.
Talk of trading Lance makes no sense to me. Shanny’s scheme puts a lot on the QB and his QB attrition rate is crazy so keeping Lance is a must IMO.
I’m pretty sure the Niners can win with Purdy or Darnold but I have no idea about Lance so for me he is 3rd string until proven otherwise. TC and pre-season will be mean a lot for all 3 of them for different reasons.
Rookie camp underway and full camp next week, cue the endless QB debate and let’s go Niners!
I agree. My problem with Darnold when he was drafted was his long throwing motion. He seems to have cut that down. It’s the first thing I’ll be looking at for him when he sees his first game action.
Yah, no kidding. The endless talk is maddening. But if Darnold passes Lance, they have big problems. Well, they really don’t. They just have a ton of egg on their face. They’ve gone through those drafts fairly well anyway, and this team’s high picks are crap anyway. So no harm, no foul.
Still, if Lance can’t beat Darnold, then we won’t sign his 5th year option and we would simply let him go. That being said, I’m pretty sure Lance will be the #2 once the games start. Provided Purdy is back.
Nex week!
Yeah, it’s about time for some football action.
Robert Fripp on lead guitar.
Phil Manzanera on guitar.
Always liked his stuff.
Hey Chuck. I have to sign in before every post now. I don’t know what I am doing wrong. Any idea’s?

I could play a ton of Fripp. Never gets old.
Winder, maybe clear your cache. I’ve checked my settings and I don’t have logging on set every time you post.
Fripp is fighting the bowie estate over that song
New thread is up!!!
