Well, that was weird. The Niners postured, posed, and intimated that their guy was Mac Jones. Instead, they went with what most sane people thought they should do, and drafted Trey Lance.
The most telling aspect of it was, right after he was picked, Lance was asked “When did you find out that the 49ers were going to pick you?” Lance said “About 2 minutes ago!”
Maybe it did take some arm-twisting behind the scenes by John Lynch to get Kyle Shanahan off of the Pillsbury Doughboy. Maybe Shanny had a back-room deal to talk up Jones and leave him for Belichick. Maybe they just wanted to anger the fans for no apparent reason other than to mess with our heads.
No idea, but the good news is we didn’t draft Mac Jones. He fell to 15 like most of us thought anyway. We drafted the guy I thought we should be targeting all along. Trey Lance. He of the linebacker size and a cannon for an arm. Yes, he’s raw, but you can’t teach size and speed. He’s smart, quick, mobile, and tough. He is very familiar with a pro-style play-action offense and has vast potential.
I’ve said all along, he has the greatest upside of all of these guys not named Trevor Lawrence. Color me ecstatic with this pick.
Got a CB from Oregon Lenoir. Kinda small but relentless from what I am reading.
Well if nothing else this draft was different. We didn’t draft a DL, WR, or TE. We usually get an LB also. I liked this draft because we mostly went offense hopefully we got stronger.
The 49ers selected safety Talanoa Hufanga with the No. 180. Hufanga feels like more of a hybrid type of player who lives and excels around the line of scrimmage. Hufanga is a player who plays with a ton of confidence and has an alpha mentality.
He’s physical and aggressive, sometimes in ways that hurt him. There’s no denying Hufanga’s playmaking skills, though. In 20 targets last year, Hufanga had four INTs and five pass breakups. The ball finds him.
If DeMeco Ryans plans to run a lot of dime defense, then Hufanga is an ideal fit. He can blitz, cover, and tackle. You don’t want Hufanga playing the deep third, but that’s what Jimmie Ward, Tarvarius Moore, and Jaquiski Tartt are on the roster for.
He also has a serious injury history, which is why he was still available.
Hufanga suffered a broken collarbone as a freshman, concussion and shoulder sprain in ‘19 but no issues in 2020 when he won Pac 12 DPOY honors. At this point in the draft, it’s a low-risk, high-reward scenario for the Niners.
Yeah, they say he’s a mauler.
Haven’t you senile old clowns realized that Trey Lance is going to be THE NEXT JOE MONTANA?!! Get pumped, losers!
Looks like you get LBs as UDFAs this time Winder 😀
LB Justin Hilliard, Ohio State
LB Elijah Sullivan, Kansas State
A WR too –
WR Austin Watkins Jr., UAB
Austin Watkins – 6’3″/210 – 16.8 YPC 9TDs
Cousin of Sammy Watkins too
LB Elijah Sullivan, Kansas State could be a Safety convert too – 6’0″/215 is kinda small for a LB?
Got a TE as well –
TE Josh Pederson, Louisiana-Monroe – 6’5″/235 12YPC 11TDs
And the Bills took my OT Spencer Brown

I like the UDFA’s about as much as I like the regular draft. Especially this year since no one got to see the combine and only limited pro days. Needles in a haystack.
Agree Winder, Lots of good talent out there, just because they’re name wasn’t called in the draft. Same goes when teams DFA players on they’re rosters now..
The LBs and the WR could very well stick. New thread is up.
