Wait Till Next Year

So, once again we are back to evaluating talent, and looking to the future. I suppose this is a good thing, at least in the case of our recent draft. CJ and the BeatHards get a shot at becoming a viable backup, and guys like Dante Pettis, Fred Warner, and Mike McGlinchey work their way into solid vet status. Frankly, Pierre Garcon has done little and I’m wondering when he’ll yield to Pettis. Maybe we should just cut him loose or trade him for draft picks. Beyond that, we can wait for our injured pass rusher Kentavius Street to healthy up.

Then there’s the Beater. He took his lumps with little complaint last year as the team transitioned out of the wilderness years of the post-St. Jim moonscape. Sure, he’s deliberate and slow on his release, but he’s just getting acclimated. If he can process things a little bit quicker, he maybe able to do some damage. But I’m not holding my breath.

And then there’s Jerick McKinnon. We designed our entire offense around him this offseason, and he has been available for nothing yet. Like Malcolm Smith before him, he may be a guy that can’t seem to get onto the field.  Smith, like the entire Niner defense last weekend, seemed to whiff on everything, and he had one tackle.

Going forward though, the onus is on the defense. Last week was a debacle of epic proportions. 5 TDs on 5 possessions will never put you in a position to win. 3 games into this season, and we have given up at least 6 first downs on 3rd and 10+ to screens and scrambles up the middle. KC ran 5 or 6 screens that all netted at least 12 yards over and over and over. Linebacker coverage the last 2 weeks was atrocious. The Det game was understandable as the always-unavailable Smith was out, and Foster was on the last game of his suspension, but Foster, Warner, and Smith were nowhere to be seen all game vs KC. Sure, they have weapons, but when a back has no one within 10 yards of him at the time of the catch, he’s going to get big yards.

Inexcusable.

So, we got San Dawg on the road. It’s early in the season, so they should suck. But, the perennially underachieving Bolts will likely light up our suddenly depleted defensive backfield. I guess Tarvarius Moore will get more playing time . . .

Hey Chuck thanks for finding that obscure Journey video from the San Mateo auditorium!
Yeah even on the video you can tell how much Mota smoke 💨 was in the air including mine!!
Hey you mentioned my high school San Carlos High, a few months after the Journey show, Pablo Cruise played up at my School, another great show with a band just starting out in 74..
Ocean Breeze,A place in the Sun, they rocked it!!

  2. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

That was Winterland, but close enough!! Saw a ton of shows there.

You went to San Carlos high? Had a few friends there that graduated in 1979. Very close to the end of that school. We lived on Howard, and then Walnut in the 90s. Love that area.

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Yeah I still live in San Carlos on Roland off of Eaton above Alameda..
Yeah San Carlos High was a great school, major parties, nude relays ditching the cops to to find a place to run 4 man relays in just your robes, but then tossing your rub and swinging your junk for about 25 yard each, it was hilarious 😆 Should of never torn it down!

It’s grade school now. At least parts of it. I used to go 4 wheeling in my old Land Cruiser on Sugarloaf. It was perfect because if the San Carlos/Belmont cops saw us, we’d split on the San Mateo side. If it was San Mateo cops. we could leave through Redwood City or Belmont.

Tank! Tank! Tank! Get Nick Bosa in here and a SAM who can blitz and cover, then let’s re-evaluate the D.

  4. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I don’t think they WANT to tank, but it just may work out that way. Our defense is not where I thought it would be.

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Good game tonight anyway. This may be a preview of the NFC Championship game.

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Yeah, looks like a good one.The Vikes have some serious bouncing back to do, so I expect a good battle.

  6. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

I think NJ made one joke regarding tanking and that’s it from anyone. Chill out. And Saleh has plenty to work with, certainly enough to avoid getting down 35-7 in a big game. Yeah, they need depth and more talent, but I see a ton mental errors and poor game planning. Missed tackles, guys way out of position, not accounting for running backs on swing passes, etc, etc.

That’s on him. He’s just a lousy DC who hasn’t shown much in a year and a half. His D needs to start showing some serious improvement, and fast. If I’m Lynch, I’m already putting together a shopping list of guys to replace him.

  7. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Is this Bosa supposed to be as good as his brother?

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Jesus. The Rams don’t look too good. They look fucking scary.

    All about the pass rush.

  9. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

That was a retarded sequence at the end of the half. WTF was Zimmer doing? Burn the damn timeout, take a couple of shots in the end zone, then kick the FG. WTF.

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Wow. The Vikes are retarded. They just wasted 20 seconds to spike the ball on the 17 yard line. They could have called a time out and run 3 plays. Doh!

Vikes were my fantasy defense. Glad I dumped them.

  11. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Yeh, the Rams look unstoppable right now. A guy I work with was ripping on Goff when he was drafted. He looks every bit the #1 guy right now. It’s not like he couldn’t throw the ball at Cal. They had a prolific offense there.

Here’s hoping Kendrick Bourne ends up being as good as his college teammate.

  12. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

You can say what you want about LA, that is one nice setting for an early fall football game, especially at night. Beautiful evening and perfect football weather.

  13. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Entertaining game. The fucking Rams looking pretty tough.

  14. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Was that a pass rush I saw there when the Rams really needed it? Someone help me here. I forgot what one looked like.

  15. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Yeah once the Rams dumped Jeff Fisher and his stupid over the hill approach and hired Sean McVay both Gurley&Goff exploded!!

  16. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

    26-33 for Goff 455 yards 5TD’s unreal!!
40 pt night in Fantasy Football 🏈 as well, one hella of a night!

  17. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

That was one of the more entertaining game in recent memory, with fewer than normal penalties, although there was still no shortage of field laundry. It goes to show that the league can still field an entertaining product when the officials get the hell out of the way.

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, it was kinda cool but all it did for me was emphasize the need for a pass rush. Goff didn’t miss shit when given the time. Just like Mahomes,

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

He was just as accurate at Cal and you can tell he’s feeling real comfortable with the weapons he has. I see them going to the superbowl.

  19. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

He made some amazingly accurate throws last night, a number of them on deep balls. Just flat out dimes. Don’t get consistent pressure and prepare to be carved up.

  20. Winder's avatar Winder says:

I hate the idea that we may be the stinking Ram’s red headed stepchild for the next few years. I didn’t like that McVay went to LA but he and KS stepped into total different situations. We will be back but it looks like it’s gonna take a little longer.

  21. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Yeah, McVay inherited a stacked roster and they’ve bolstered it a lot to it since then. Still, the guy is a smart coach and the team executes really well, something the Niners have not figured out yet, at least not consistently, which is what it’s all about.

  22. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

The funny thing is, neither LA or MN played shit for defense on Thursday, or all year, and they’re supposed to be two of the best. If LA gets that part sorted out, they may be unstoppable.

Crowning teams in September rarely works out.

  24. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

The Rams have a 1 1\2 game lead over – wait for it – second place in the NFC.

  25. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

    Chargers 30 Niners…
Ah, what’s the point. Maybe next year.

  26. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

No game day thread today Chuck?

I’m not as down on the Niners chances today as most seem to be. Niners are 10 1/2 point dogs today. San Diego has a worse D than the Niners.

I think they have a real shot at a competitive game IF Brieda and Morris play decently despite their injuries. CJ should play game manager and they should lean on their run game. Rivers can’t score from the bench.

This is a litmus test game for Saleh in my mind. His players need to do the basics well and take correct angles to tackle. He is not playing the game, but coaching and scheme adjustment are in his wheelhouse, another stinker puts him squarely on the hot seat.

    Niners 24 Chargers 21

  27. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    Hey, it’s there. Gimme time . . .

    New thread is up!
