In a move that will piss off a lot of people, let’s call them stupid people, the 49ers signed newly released free agent and their biggest nemesis from their biggest rival, Richard Sherman. of the Seattle Seahawks. Sherman reportedly signed a 3 year, $39 mill deal ($5 mill guaranteed) a couple hours ago. His tour of suitors lasted exactly one team, and he obviously wanted to stay on the West coast, so he did the deed as his own agent to boot.
Frankly, it is a pretty risky move to sign a guy coming off an achilles injury, but Sherman assured everyone he’d be ready come June. Sherman has been a little injury-prone lately, but he’s relatively young as 29 (well, 30 in March 30th), and the premier CB in the past 7 seasons. He leads the lead since 2011 in interceptions at 37, passes defended, and completion percentage against.
As risky as this move is, you have to think that the team has done its diligence, and John Lynch, no slouch himself where it comes to being a defensive back, has to be licking his chops at gaining Sherman. I think it’s a great move. I also think it is a poke in the eye to Pete Carroll. Which I really dig. What do you think?
To be ready in June, like Sherman claims, he will have had about 8 months of rehab on his achilles under his belt. A quick web search indicates 6-9 months or longer for full recovery. That sounds encouraging, but given the explosive cutting and driving required of the CB position, that seems optimistic to me. $5M doesn’t seem like a huge risk in today’s NFL and I’ll defer to Shana-Lynch on this one, I’m sure Sherman was fully examined, but I’m still tepid on this signing.
Michael Crabtree had this injury with the Niners, and came back pretty quickly. I remember his first game back he had a huge game with a long TD and a bunch of yards, but after that it didn’t seem like he was at full strength until the following season.

Sherman is not the complete answer at CB. As has been noted he’s been injury prone. We need a lockdown corner on the other side. We have some depth but need more.
Next target
Norwell,
Sitton
or
Justin Pugh
Justin Pugh is one of the best guards in the NFL, but had to play out of his position at right tackle this year.
I also want this WR
is a 13-time Pro Bowler and 12-time All Pro. A holder of more than 100 NFL records, including career catches, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, four 100-plus-reception seasons, gained more than 1,000 receiving yards an astonishing 14 times and once caught 22 TD passes in one season

Expect the 49ers to land at least one more big-ticket item, ….
Allen Robinson and …
Good move if we do
“Expect the 49ers to land at least one more big-ticket item,
Allen Robinson and … are two more talented free agents who could soon join San Francisco”

Who’s the second, Rob? Robinson has some decent looking numbers, but I don’t know much about him. He’s tall. Is he fast?
Deion Lewis
I have to wonder how the fans will respond to Sherman, at least initially. I can’t think of too many opposing players more reviled in 49ers history than Sherman. I truly hated him as a Seahawk. The turkey dinner bullshit won’t be be soon forgotten by The Faithful.
, as you’d probably expect. Seahawks fans were really upset with Sherman signing with their biggest rival.

That’s awesome. Couldn’t happen to a better collection of bandwagon fans.
We took in Wendell Tyler who was pretty much hated for a good 5/6 years . If Sherman plays good he will be ok with most fans. But if he plays bad that’s a whole different story. It’s all about winning.
Lurker- our team truly sucked that Thanksgiving Day. It sucked that they did that but it was our fault for being such a shitty team.
Not like Sherman, not to mention that Wendell was always a pretty likable guy. Sherman rubbed everyone outside of Seattle the wrong way.
And I agree with you about the state of the team that game and that season, but that is one indelible image for Niners fans. Hey, a couple of well-timed picks and this guy will be the toast of the town, but it’s not easy for me to just forget the recent past with this guy. But I’ll give him a fair shake.
Beyond that it was ESPN that set up the table on the 50 yard line. It’s not like it was Sherman’s idea to suddenly cook and eat dinner on the field.
So, it didn’t piss you off?
I didn’t see it. I turned it off before they showed it.
Robinson is 6’3″, 210 lb. He’ll be 25 in August.
Glad to see Goodwin was extended. He’s going to be even better this year.
Hacksaw and Fumbell were both hated players who were welcomed when they played well here.
As was Deion, Kermit Alexander, and a few others.
Kinda wondering if the game plan is to wait on post FA cut downs now with the Sherman signing?
Either the DB position at 9 will focus elsewhere or, there could be an opportunity to deal back, if an offer is made for what could be a QB needy team looking to move up.
Have to figure they’ll be willing to watch guys like Carlos/Reid and Dontae walk in FA, in favor of Comp Picks perhaps?
This Class is loaded with RB/DB and DL talent, which is favorable to getting younger, and cheaper, at the expense of waiting for Comp Picks and Rookie development.
Reids’ younger Brother looks good on stats and, won’t be near the price of Eric while likely being one of many good S options coming next month.
I’ll give Sherman his due since he’s got some value to teach and coordinate the Saleh system, along with Malcom Smith.
I simply never liked the guy and probably never will, unless he learns to shut his piehole, and simply do what he’s paid to do, take away his half of the Field.
More concerning was the report of Lynch attempting to Trade for Aqib Talib.
Of all the risky morons in the NFL, he would rank in my top 3.
Irony of all irony was, Talib didn’t want to come to SF and nixed the deal (thankfully).
Maybe I’m just getting cranky in my extended years but, what happened to Niner Dignity?
Foster is now a festering boil on the lips of the Franchise and, they seriously thought of parting with a Pick or more for Talib?
Gotta wonder just how many hits to the head Lynch took in his career?
From Talib, to our most hated rival in just a few short days? WTF was he thinking?
At least Sherman has some connection to Saleh.
For whatever that gets us, he won’t need to change the way he does the job at least.

Fuck it, I hope we still want T. Johnson might as well bring another stinkin Ram over.
NJ- I read that stuff about Talib I think we dodged a bullet with him.
Thankfully it was Talib who didn’t want to come here Winder.
Speaking of bullets…He’s the shooter too. Nut job.
Talib is a dipshit of the highest order. Say what you will about Sherman and his outspokenness, he’s a very smart guy and hopefully good teacher for the young DBs. Talib is a fucking head case.
Precisely why I was wondering what the h3ll Lynch was thinking Chuck.
Sherman has also done a lot of community work in the Puget Sound area, especially with kids. He does seem like a different person off the field, plus he’s never been in trouble. This is me trying to get on board. 🙂
Lol. Yeah me too. Sometimes change is hard to do.
