Rest in peace, Led Rhode. Great O lineman from back in the day. He was part of an outstanding line that gelled in 1970 to become one of the best in the league, and was instrumental in the 70-72 playoff run. Rhode in particular was squared off many times against Deacon Jones of the Rams, and more often than not, Jones was the one left beaten and dismayed. The team in this era was the team I grew up watching. My first game was in 1968 at Kezar, and these guys were etched in my mind as my favorites. Sure there was Brodie, Gene Washington, Ken Willard, and Bob Windsor, but Len Rhode at left tackle, Brodie’s blind side protector, center Forrest Blue, guards Woody Peoples and Randy Biesler, and RT Caz Banazek anchored the team through their agonizingly close to Super Bowl-glory days.
Dude went out at 79, and played in 208 consecutive games, so he apparently weathered his career unscathed.
“As an offensive tackle, there aren’t too many individual stats you can hang your hat on, but I guess playing in 208 games, winning the Len Eshmont, the NFC West, going to the Pro Bowl and the sack record aren’t bad.”
Not bad, indeed. A sky-point, and a drink raised in your honor . . .

I can’t stand him either but the problem is is that he is still a really good player. I am hoping they pick up kap too.
His goodness as a player is part of the reason I can’t stand him (and his mouth). If he sucked, it wouldn’t much matter. It’s just interesting to read about the crap that’s been going on in the Seahawk’s locker room.

DJ Jones is a NT we took in the 6th rd. He’s supposed to be a high motor guy which is good because most 6th rd NTs are suspect in the high motor category. He’s 320 lbs and can one gap. I’m sure at that weight the team is hoping he’ll be a good two gapper in a year or two. I’ve seen some hi-lites and he looked good. I’ll watch some game film soon and get back to you with more.
I watched some film on DJ. It was all hi-lite so it didn’t show many weaknesses. The hi-lite reel is impressive. I only got one view of him taking on a double team. It looked OK but it was not a good angle. What was impressive is he was pushing the double team back, that wasn’t the impressive part because it was a screen pass. What he did was sniff it out and run laterally to make the tackle for a minimal gain. He really gets to the action.
The guy is really quick for a 320 pound man. He plays way too high but what college player doesn’t. When he hits people they fly backwards. He also wraps up well. What I noticed the most were his quickness and good instincts for the game as it unfolded around him. He is a lot like Anthony Adams and Ian Williams but bigger and more instinctive.
If he can learn to take on double teams well we might have something special. He definitely has the size for that. I like the pick. Hard to believe we got him with a 6th rd pick.
I always said Harbaugh ran a college offense and didn’t have much of a clue for the passing game. Here is a former player agreeing with some details. Jacobs was a disgruntled player but he still identifies some reasons our passing game sucked. The cancer blog that idolizes Harby will shit their pants and deny. NJ49er used to say we are playing checkers while they are playing chess. Here are some examples. Jacobs is quoted as saying:
“Going somewhere where they don’t have route conversions into certain coverages was just absurd,” Jacobs said. “They’re just running routes in the defense, getting people killed. Size and strength is what they had, and that’s why they won. Let’s be real. They had great assistant coaches, but Jim didn’t know what he was doing. Jim had no idea. Jim is throwing slants into Cover-2 safeties, getting people hurt. That guy knew nothing, man.”

Warren Haynes kept them going as the stand in for Duane for a number if years too.
Always loved this song too, which Haynes does extremely well to this day.
Back in college in Daytona Beach I was sitting in a A1A honky-tonk with several friends, listening to an Allman Bros tribute band.
During one of sets the band stopped in the middle of a song and, the lead guitarist took the guitar off his shoulder and offered to a guy in the audience, suggesting ‘I’m not worthy, please do it justice’.
We see this cowboy hat pop up from the crowd near the front.
None other than Dickey Betts was watching the band with us.

Memorial Day……..does anyone give a damn? A poll somewhere came out and most Americans don’t know much about this holiday.
This one still means a lot to me. I always thought it was one of the better holidays that we have. What I don’t like is that they move it around, it should be on the 31st.
Giants brawl was more entertaining than yesterday’s game. I was watching the game on TV bored out of my mind and then it all happened quickly. Strickland and Harper put on a good show. Of course this was silly and stupid but it was entertaining while the actual game was not.
