Well, yesterday by all intents and purposes couldn’t have gone much better for John Lynch. He traded down one spot, got 4 picks, and still got the guy he wanted in Salomon Thomas. And for some reason Reuben Foster, the #1 rated LB in the class fell to the 31st spot, which the 49er promptly traded up to snag. With the help of one of the picks (#111 in the 4th round) they got from Chicago.
All in all a fairly outstanding first go-around in the draft. Jonathan Adams may have been my favorite guy but I figured they would take Thomas. But getting Foster is gravy upon gravy. There is no way anyone thought he would fall so far. But, the odd thing is this is the 3rd defensive lineman ion a row the Niners have drafted. First there was Arik Armstead, then DeForest Buckner, the bookend Ducks. Now we have fellow Pac-12 DL Salomon Thomas.
They say you build from the lines out, right?
As for day 2, what do y’all think? We need some offensive help, and we have picks 66 and 67. Then again, we need safety depth and there are still guys like Melifonwu, Budda Baker, and Marcus Williams. Then again DeShone Kizer is still around but he won’t likely fall to the 3rd. WR Chris Godwin? We do need guys that can catch the ball . . .

Even though I really want some offense I think #1 priority is DB. The way it sounds though is we will take the BPA and at this point it just might make the most sense.
If any one of those 3 safeties are left they should take him.
2nd and 3rd picks in the third round today. Let’s see if Lynch and Shanny can keep it up.

Just watched some video on CJ Beathard. he looks pretty good. Great footwork, throws receivers open, OK arm strength and nice touch.
They must have seen something they liked about him. I’m glad we got him, at least we can try to develop him. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get another QB down the road.
I watched video of only one game so the sample size is small. What I saw was an offense where the receivers were not getting open in space and he still got the ball to them. If he had to do that all year his low completion percentage all of a sudden looks pretty good. He also had some balls down field that were way off target. His targets were covered so he might have done that on purpose. I would need to watch a lot more video to determine that and I’m going to leave that to the experts. He is a pocket passer, he is not going to be making plays with his feet. He does have good awareness and poise in the pocket. His footwork was even good under pressure, something few QBs in college do consistently. But like I said, this was one game. Overall, I like the pick.
Something that strikes me as radically different with the new guys is they have blended BPA with need. Maybe thats pure blind luck or because any pick would be a need who knows?
They shored up the pass rush and stopping the run, something last years team couldn’t do to save its life. Drafted a CB that they have needed for years and have taken a QB to develop. The last 2 positions being something the last braintrust ignored almost completely.
IMO any team with 10 picks plus year after year has to take a developmental QB and these guys have done just just that.
They also gained a 2 and 3 next year to boot.
I don’t know about assigning grades as we all know its a crapshoot but first impressions are they exceeded expectations.
Baalke was known as a guy that could get value for trades, I’d say Lynch has done even better as well as getting the guys they coveted.
Let’s hope this draft is as deep as projected.
Combined with what they have already done in FA I for one am really impressed so far.
Joe Williams (RB) Utah and Kapri Bibbs (RB) via trade from the Broncos. I know nothing about either of these guys. Bibbs hasn’t done squat in the NFL but he hasn’t had much of a chance either. Williams evidently has had some off-field issues, but is supposed to be an explosive runner when he’s focused on football.
Depth at the running back position. I was hoping for a little more of an NFL ready back, but Lynch/Shanahan see something in these guys, so that’s enough for me. For now,
2 picks in each of the 5th and 6th rounds, one in the 7th coming up.
I watched a few Utah games this year and this RB we just took, Joe Williams, is all that! He has some issues but as a RB he is a star in the making. I just hope his heart is in it. If it is he’ll be our feature back before the end of the season. If he starts at the beginning of the year he could be the ROY. He’s that good.
Well, one of the things Lynch has said he values above almost anything else is a love of football. I’m assuming he got that vibe from Williams, so this could end up being a great pick. Cool.
Devonta Freeman was a fourth round pick and Tevin Coleman a third round pick and both those guys turned out okay.
It’s not that amazing that we got a TE in the 5th round who is a good blocker and can catch the ball. What is amazing is he is 6’4, runs a 4.5 and has 35″ vertical. Sounds like a steal!
