Wither Our Quarterback?

Despite what has been said by Kyle Shanahan, you really have to wonder what the 49ers are going to do about the quarterback situation. I mean really, short of blowing up this year’s draft for Cousins (fairly inconsistent) or Garoppolo (unproven), it would be tantamount to going all-in this year to make a playoff or bust run to get either of those guys. With all the needs of the team, this isn’t warranted, or even smart, strategy.

Really, even if the team somehow makes it to the playoffs this year, they wouldn’t get past the WC round. So, making a big QB splash at this point would do more damage to the long-term future of the team. So, what should they do? We[ve gone over this a few times, and there really isn’t a lot of wheat to choose from amid all the chaff.

Cutler? No.
Fitzpatrick? No.
Hoyer? Meh. Possible.
Schaub? Sure, he knows Shanny. Possible.

The rest are dog meat.

Then there is the curious case of Colin Kaepernick. There’s floaters out there saying cut and re-sign him on the cheap and see what happens. Seeing as this season will be a long and likely painful one as well, hey, why not? Kappy may try to get a decent season under his belt to bolster his status in the NFL. The talk is there’s no interest, but I thinks that bullshit as if you watched the NFL last year, you saw a lot of QBs playing like shit. Kaepernick had zero help on either side of the ball and in the coaching staff, so there are certainly coaches out there that think they can get more out of him. I still feel that Denver is in his future. Barring that, the Jets.

Will it come to pass that Kappy stays here? More than likely not. In fact  what I see happening is that the 49ers get Schaub, keep Ponder, and take a shot in the later rounds for someone like the Western Michigan guy Zack Terrell.

I think whatever (whomever) the QB situation ends up being this year will be little more than a bridge to the following season. I have to believe that Shanny and Lynch see it that way, even though they’d never admit it publicly. Cousins? I say no way, the ‘Skins tag him before they let him leave. Garropolo? Maybe, though he is an unknown. This year’s QB draft class is considered to be subpar. So, I don’t know. The Niners do have a lot to bargain with, who really knows what they come up with.

Draft to bolster the lines on both sides of the ball, plug holes elsewhere through the draft of free agency, like they’ve already started to do with Earl Mitchell. Get a fucking quality wideout prospect. Then start formulating a plan to draft a QB next year, or target any top end QB free agents that may be out there next year.

Either way, I agree, Chuck, this will probably be another tough season, but Lynch is already winning me over and I’m confident in Shanny’s ability to get it done. I think those two will be working closer together than any GM/coach tandem we’ve seen in years in SF, maybe ever. I’m really excited for the draft.

    Just my two bits.

  2. Winder says:

Anything that KS says about a QB from this point until after the draft is straight smoke. And, i bet he fools a lot of people in the QB we draft this year. He’s the only one who can see what he wants in the next QB. We don’t know squat. I think Schaub is the most logical and economical choice for this year. i truly don’t want to see Kap on the team next year. It will just prolong the misery. i was a staunch Kap fan until the last two years and I believe he’s hit his ceiling and can’t get any better.

  3. 12th Man says:

The talk around the Chiefs is that Alex Smith can’t get it done and maybe they trade for Romo, releasing or trading Alex.

    What say you?

Ok its huge long shot time but that would be epic irony if the Niners traded for him, not that I want him.

  4. 12th Man says:

Trade for Cousins, not for the franchise tag swap but work a deal where the Skins get the #2 plus maybe the Niners second and the Niners get their #17 and maybe their 4th, something like that. Garopollo is an unknown with 2 games under his belt, he may turn out to be awesome who knows but Cousins is a reliable starter right now and for the next 4 years or so.

    • 12th Man says:

Another valuable aspect with Cousins is he already knows the offense and has said the Niners are the only team he wants to trade to.
      i say git er done.

      • 12th Man says:

Just as I write that they report Cousins is exclusively tagged, no trade.

      • Winder says:

yeah, it was nice while it lasted. Been awhile since a player said the only team he wanted to be traded to was the Niners. i think I like Cousins.

  5. unca_chuck says:

Oh, it could still happen, but it would cost the Niners a LOT as Washington controls him, rather than Cousins himself.

  6. unca_chuck says:

Since they tagged Cousins, we still could get him next year. Washington is dragging their feet to commit to him,

  7. NJ49er says:

The ERFA Tag on Cousins doesn’t prevent a Trade.
It simply gives DC the right to make their own deal or pay the Mkt Price.
We can’t part with our 1st RD Pick IMO.
Trade back and get an extra Pick would be the only way I’d go.
    C’mon TN….Let’s do this.

  8. Nipper says:

Washington isn’t going to give up on Cousins. Why should they? Please stop this yearning for players that never will be seeing a Niner uniform. It ain’t going to happen. Anyway Cousins is only a decent QB hardly the second coming. And trading a lot of picks for him is stupid. I hope Shanny is smart enough to avoid the pitfalls of bad football teams wasting their resources on mediocre talent.

    • Winder says:

I don’t think we will see him in a Niner uni either. I would have given a 1st for him though but that would have been all considering the contract he would have demanded.

      • 12th Man says:

I hadn’t seen much of Cousins play but looked into him as speculation grew. He set yardage records last year and is more than solid.
I think the chances of a trade dropped to just about zero with the exclusive tag since the player can’t discuss his possible future contract.
Pats are saying Garopollo is staying put and if that’s not just BS then the free agency field is thin.
The good news is Kap hired his new agents and they say he is opting out, don’t let the door hit you in the knee on your way out.

  9. 12th Man says:

Revis is cut. He is no longer a top CB but would make a great safety.

  10. unca_chuck says:

I think we are moving Ward to FS? At least I’d like them to entertain that idea.

The guy I’m curious about is the last of Baalke’s ACL guys, Will Redmond.

    • 12th Man says:

Yeah maybe Baalke gets 1 right from all those injured guys and they end up with a quality starter.
I think Ward would be a very good FS but he did hurt his shoulder at the end of last year so there is that to factor in.

    • Winder says:

I thought Ward was already a Safety. I know he’s a pretty good tackler.

  11. Flavor says:

No more Kep. NO NO NO NO NO.

  12. Irish Kevin says:

Davis Webb and DeShone Kizer, are the two QB’s the Niners could go after is what I have been hearing.

  13. unca_chuck says:

Ward was playing slot corner last I checked.

    • Winder says:

I guess he has been a corner. I know when we drafted him he was a safety. Our D sucked so bad last year that I lost interest early on.

  14. 12th Man says:

He played both CB spots last year moving down to slot on 3rd downs mostly.

    • NJ49er says:

Yes, moved him around as needed.
New Defense is going to require some changes obviously.
      From PFT –
Ward did serve as a backup at Safety at times but has primary played in the slot, and as an outside cornerback, in his three years with the 49ers. He’s appeared in 35 games over that span with 18 starts.

  15. NJ49er says:

Looks like Schneider in Seattle is getting some heat for his OLine shortcomings, by his own admission –

  16. rtfirefly says:

Well, Chuck, I dunno. I get 1/3 of a screen now that I’ve tried everything more times
    than I can count.
Only happens here with WordPress. I’m not giving up my other apps, lol. This PC is
    loaded with stuff I like.

Alas, poor Kappy. I knew him well. I must say, I’m more interested in the whole
FA/draft process than I ever remember being in my lifetime.

FA feeding frenzy begins Thurs. at 1 PM PDT. That’s when the fun begins!

Be well, everybody! (I want to wait on a QB till next year, and if Sam Darnold from
my cousin’s alma mater SC gets any better, then I throw everything but the kitchen
sink to get him. But truth is, Shanny will find someone like Peterman in the late 2nd
or early 3rd and turn him into a superior QB. Cuz, that’s what Shanny does.)

  17. Nipper says:

Kap wants to leave so good riddance. After the Harbaugh years he’s been virtually worthless. Please I hope you guys get tired playing amateur draft experts or FA signing GMs. If you’re not a pro it don’t mean a thing. Look how the so-called experts fail so frequently. All the info they have and they still can’t get inside the players heads or hearts.

  18. rtfirefly says:

3 QBs led the 49ers to the Super Bowl: Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Colin
Kaepernick. That’s on the record books.

Let’s all stop acting like experts and speculating about the Niners. Let’s all stop
giving opinions about football. Let’s take up crochet.

  19. Winder says:

RT-I haven’t been this interested in the draft in a long time too. I guess it’s because Baalky was so bad at it. I don’t care where or when we take the players just as long as they are good. I know we can’t bat 1.000 but I would be happy with a .450 right about now.
Fuck Crochet and Badminton. Baseball is right around the corner. Actually, Ping-pong and Badminton were always fun to play.

  20. unca_chuck says:

RTF, I don’t think anyone else is having problems. Wish I knew how to fix yours other than the usual clear the cache, get rid of old internet files, and clear the spam filter.

  21. 12th Man says:

Kap says he won’t do his protest this year. Nice, he can make a laughing stock of the Niners but now that his next contract is a big question mark he can set aside his moral outrage at injustice. Fucking hypocrite.

  22. unca_chuck says:

Shit, Kappy got Jed and others to pony up money so in my eyes he did some good.

As for the hooraw around his kneeling, meh. Being free means being free to do the unpopular thing.

But whatever. Come on down Brian Hoyer. Or Matt (Earl) Schaub . . .

  23. unca_chuck says:

Apparently BakkenBuwwitt is smoking the koolaid. He seems top think we can get a #1 pick for Blaine Gabbert. And then he poo poos it. And he thinks we should go after Josh (dude, where’s my car?) Gordon.

Right. The guy isn’t even reinstated. Might as well go after Aldon Smith for good measure. Jesus.

    • Winder says:

You know Gordon really hasn’t done anything wrong, he just likes his weed. He doesn’t go around hurting people, beating up girls or carrying firearms. After all this time I’m not sure he could play any longer. But, if the league reinstates him and he checks out ok I would consider taking a flyer on him. Maybe he’s figured it out and would play for Lynch and Shanny. The dude did have all pro talent and we need some game changing WR’s..

    • Nipper says:

Lets face it Kap’s agents just want him marketable so no more knee shit. It’s just reality. As for me I never gave a hoot about the anthem or the knee bs. I only cared about Kaps ability to lead the team. After the Harbaugh years he was an inferior player for the Niners. He just underperformed plain and simple. In other words, he was just lousy as a QB. He was only at his best on one knee. After that it was all downhill. HA!

  24. unca_chuck says:

I don’t know about Gordon, I mean he’s had 5 opportunities to figure out how not to get caught, but still gets caught.

    Stupidity isn’t a virtue.

We are going after Spitty’s guy, Alshon Jeffery. Works for me. Says he wants to sign with a contender though. Keep the faith, Alshon!

  25. unca_chuck says:

Until the league reinstates Gordon, he’s a mirage. As far as pot goes, the league’s stance is ridiculous.

“Here, fellas. Take 5,000 Percodans. Steroids? HGH? No prob. Get hooked and fucked up just to stay in the game.”

    “Pot?!?!?!?! Suspended forever!!!”

  26. unca_chuck says:

new thread is up. Thanks, Winder. . .
