Game Day! (The) Silence (of) the Lambs

Here we are, the final game of the opening week of NFL 2016. We get the east coast/west coast Monday Night double-header. Cool for us on the West Coast, but if there are any 49er fans in New York, they get a 10:40 pm start time. Kinda sucks for them, but Monday Night Football has always been a bit of a fuck-a-row for the East Coasters.

Anyhoo, this game is going to be a test for both teams. Chip kelly is for all intents and purposes seemingly done a decent job of taking a bunch of miscellaneous parts from the previous regime and a recent draft that focussed on both lines to give us a small sliver of hope that the team may have a solid base to work from. At least this is what gives me hope.

QB? Well, this is a bit of a quandary. Blaine Gabbert won the job merely by being there more than Colin Kaepernick. Nothing great, but not a lot of mistakes either. Kappy? Well, depending on how tonight goes, he could very well be the starter by next week. He will bide his time as the insurance policy. As far as routes go, I’m hoping we played it close to the vest as there was very little mid-range top deep passing.

RB? Both Carlos Hyde and Shaun Draughn played little in the preseason due to injury, but both showed a lot of solid running. Keeping Hyde healthy is vastly important to the fate of this team. Draughn is a very nice compliment to Hyde, and backups Davis and Harris even looked good.

WR? The big unknown. Adding Rod Streater and Jeremy Kerley at least gives us some experienced guys after Bruce Ellington went down again. Torrey Smith has an amazingly great attitude after basically being ignored all last season, so the hope is, as with the QBs that we can open things up tonight and get the ball downfield more than the 6 yard bites we saw in the preseason.

The O line, despite the shenanigans of Anthony Davis, looks vastly improved over last year’s version. Trent Brown has been very solid at RT so far, garnering praise at all stops, and the return of a healthy Kilgore Trout cannot be understated. Andrew Tiller replaces a reluctant AD and pushes him to backup RT. Joe Staley is still in fine form, and FA acquisition Zane Beadles has been solid as well as he has kept first round pick Josh Garnett from cracking the starting lineup.

Vance McD looks to be finally on the verge of a breakout year, and he’s decent enough as a blocker, as is Garrett Celek. Bell has shown flashes of good hands.

On D we should see a lot of improvement. The DBs are healthy and have looked nothing short of fantastic. Eric Reid had a nice pick 6 on Trevor Siemien, and the coverage was spot-on most every game with the starters.

The pass rush is another matter as no one has shown too much against us in the preseason to make a determination. Marcus Rush looked like a pretty good 3rd down option, but he’s on the PS for now. Aaron Lynch is serving his 4 game suspension, and a significantly lighter Tank Carradine steps in for him alongside Ahmad Brooks, the enigmatic on-again-off-again presence. Ray-Ray Armstrong had a very solid preseason and camp to push his way into the lineup alongside NaVorro Bowman.

The D line suffered a major blow since Ian Williams wasn’t able to make it back from his ankle injury. The entire D line hasn’t played a down yet together as NT Glenn Dorsey is also nursing nagging injuries, but we get to see the bookend Ducks Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner hit the field tonight along with Quinton Dial. The key here will be the rotation to keep these guys fresh against Todd Gurley. Mike Purcell at NT and Tony Jerrod-Eddie will also be rotating throughout the game, I’m sure.

So, shoot me for being a little optimistic. I think this team looks a lot better than it did one year ago. The coaching staff can’t help but be better than last year’s train wreck, and that should lead to a couple more wins than last year. Better overall play on both lines is my main reason for hope.

This game will be a pretty decent indicator of the state of the team. For obvious reasons. Our early schedule looks tough on paper, but we can possibly get 2 of the first 5.

Dallas played well enough to lose yesterday, and Carolina came 3 yards from a win themselves. Seattle looked pretty average against a not-very-good Miami defense, at home no less, and the Cards? *cough cough CHOKE!* I think that is their theme this year. They lost at home to an NE team that didn’t have Brady or Gronk.

Stop me if you heard this before. Sound familiar?

  2. Nipper says:

I’m hoping for seven wins someway, somehow. Perhaps the Niners will steal a couple and win the others. Beat LA at least.

  3. Nipper says:

    In Chipper we trust. Amen.

  4. NJ49er says:

Well Chuck, for East Coast 9er junkies like myself, being a night shift guy helps compensate for the time zone issues.
I’m definitely gonna be tuned in 😀

  5. unca_chuck says:

    Fuck. Why throw that Blaine?

  6. rtfirefly says:

Ultra, ultra conservative. Gabbert throwing short of the stick on 3rd down again. They just pointed out that we’re watching last year’s worst two teams in the league in 3rd down conversions.
    12-9 final?

  7. Lurker John says:

3rd and 2 and Gabbert throws to a back standing at the line of scrimmage. Why is a guy even running a “pattern” to the LOS on 3rd and 2? I was hoping we’d see less of this kind of offense this year.

  8. Lurker John says:

Gotta keep the pressure on Gurley up front. He can pop one at any time.

  9. unca_chuck says:

For all the shit Kappy gets for slow reads, at least he tries to get the 1st down.

  10. Lurker John says:

    That was a TD.

  11. rtfirefly says:

Misses Curly for the easy TD. Nice play design.

  12. Lurker John says:

Someone, please put Berman out to pasture.

  13. unca_chuck says:

    Come on. Red zone time.

  14. Lurker John says:

  15. rtfirefly says:

  16. Lurker John says:

Good field position does wonders for an offense. Good drive.

  17. Lurker John says:

    Good D!!!

  18. Lurker John says:

Game plan: make Case Keenum beat us.

  19. unca_chuck says:

Love the press coverage on 3rd and short.

  20. unca_chuck says:

Yup. Would love to see us pound them like the old days.

  21. Lurker John says:

He took a shot to the head on that one.

  22. unca_chuck says:

Looks like Hyde took a shot to the head. Hope he didn’t.

  23. Lurker John says:

    A -2 yard pass on 4th and 1!!!

  24. rtfirefly says:

LOL – the best laid plans of mice and men…

  25. rtfirefly says:

I mean, that was truly ugly.

  26. unca_chuck says:

Stupid play. You don’t run a pick behind the line on 4th and 1. So much for momentum.

  27. Lurker John says:

Several missed tackles, including Hodges on 3rd and 3.

  28. unca_chuck says:

There’s the D. Bowman with the pick.

  29. Lurker John says:

    Dial just bull-rushed that center.

  30. rtfirefly says:

I don’t think Kelly fears Keenum the tiniest little bit.

  31. Lurker John says:

Hyde is back! He ha me worried for a minute there.

  32. Irish Kevin says:

So far not to bad, biggest problem has been the two screens to TSmith!!

  33. unca_chuck says:

2 first downs missed. Yes!! Line tge balls ygere

  34. unca_chuck says:

Hydecwont make it through the night.

  35. Lurker John says:

Great grab! I like Kerley already.

  36. Lurker John says:

Glad to see Gabs willing to use his legs! He’s been effective.

  37. unca_chuck says:

Hell of a 4th down call

  38. Lurker John says:

I have to wonder if the Rams are targeting Hyde’s head. That’s several times now where he’s taken a shot to the head as he was going down. Great stiff arm by Draughn and great block by Patton to get him in!

  39. Lurker John says:

Over all they look pretty crisp on offense, with a few notable exceptions.

  40. Lurker John says:

Over all they look pretty crisp on offense, with a few notable exceptions. Need to get Torrey involved!

  41. rtfirefly says:

Can we play the Rams every week?

  42. Lurker John says:

Dial is giving the Rams line all they can handle.

  43. unca_chuck says:

Droughns is an idiot. He has to protect after fumbling allnpreseason

  44. NJ49er says:

Beadles looking like a solid FA signing so far.
    OL neutralizing Rams DL.

  45. NJ49er says:

Beadles looking like a solid FA signing so far.
    OL neutralizing Rams DL.

  46. Lurker John says:

That’s a killer. They were on the move and had another 1st and 10.

  47. Lurker John says:

Great blitz call! Haven’t seen those in while!

  48. unca_chuck says:

Kerley is my hew favorite player. He’s solid at WR and knows how to field punts

  49. unca_chuck says:

I suppose there’s dead silence in the playpen.

  50. unca_chuck says:

Well, gabbert has been kinda scary, but the team overall looks solid. Tge DBs are shutting down the Ram WRs

  51. rtfirefly says:

Hyde’s ability to pop outside with one hop step is the difference between 14-0 and 0-0. A great half to start the season.

  52. Lurker John says:

It’s nice having a guy like Kerley fielding those punts with complete confidence. The Niners haven’t had that in a long time. He’s turning into a steal of a trade. Great first half and I can’t remember the turf ever looking this good at Levi’s. Looks like they finally got it figured out.

The D looks great, getting a consistent push on Keenum and a couple of sacks. The secondary has looked _great_. Now the test is halftime adjustments, something the Niners struggled with in the past few years.

  53. Runnitt says:

At least Gabbert’s snatch didn’t smell too bad during that half

  54. Lurker John says:

I think Gabbert looks pretty good, actually. He looks calm back there, he’s run effectively when it’s there and he’s made some nice throws (and a few clunkers). I think he’ll be fine as he finds his groove.

  55. Lurker John says:

Then he comes out and makes a boneheaded like that and costs them 10 yards of field position.

  56. rtfirefly says:

Nice catch – the Niners have made a couple highlight plays tonight lol. Let’s see how halftime adjustments pan out.

  57. unca_chuck says:

Not so good apparently. Gabbgy needs to knock that down. Need to stay aggressive on D.

  58. unca_chuck says:

That was crucial to get the D off the field fast. No offensive momentum for the Rams.

Ha called for the fair catch.

  59. unca_chuck says:

    Now a fucking drive.

  60. unca_chuck says:

Hyde is close to breaking those.

  61. unca_chuck says:

Fuck, Blaine. That was nowhere close.

Punt coverage is pretty awesome. Blaine is going to get pulled if there’s another 3 and out.

  62. rtfirefly says:

Hyde looks like I thought he would before I got frustrated and gave up on him. The Rams are really terrible. And we get to face Jeff Fisher for another half dozen years – LOL.

  63. rtfirefly says:

That’s unfair; it’s Game 1. But the Rams have 0 passing offense, a D that was thoroughly confused in the first half, it’s just smacks of bad coaching.

  64. unca_chuck says:

Wow. Prevent offense. Gabbert has to trust the play better than that.

  65. unca_chuck says:

We may see Kappy quicker than I thought.

  66. NJ49er says:

Chip needs to stretch the Defense
    He’s playing too short

  67. unca_chuck says:

Yup. They are on to the short game. Just like we are. It may not be Chip. It may be Gabbert. The routes aren’t all short. Gabby is checking down.

  68. unca_chuck says:

Gabbert is looking scared for no reason.

  69. unca_chuck says:

Giving this game away with this bullshit. The rams adjusted to our short game and we are DOA.

  70. Lurker John says:

  71. rtfirefly says:

That was the single worst pass I’ve seen so far in the NFL. “Goff, Goff, are you ready? I don’t care, get in there!”

    • unca_chuck says:

Till that one. Shoulda been a pick 6. Gabbert is playing his way to the bench.

    • rtfirefly says:

I blinked and missed Gabby’s pass. Keenum’s was pure Mark Sanchez, except Sanchez would have good stats. Moving the ball, deep in enemy territory, chance to make it a game, then BOOM! Slam that door.

  72. unca_chuck says:

Gabby tries to score. For LA.

  73. NJ49er says:

If Kaep can’t win the starting job he ain’t try’n.
Gabbert is rushing everything, which is something Kaep usually does by running.

  74. Winder says:

Gotta love this. Our passing game still needs a lot of work but the scoreboard is all that matters.

  75. unca_chuck says:

No, I don’t have to love this. We should be able to get more than 4 yards in the 3rd quarter. Gabbert looked terrible and should have been picked twice.

  76. unca_chuck says:

Glad they took the yards. Fisher is an idiot. His team looks completely outcoached

  77. rtfirefly says:

Patton torched that CB twice, once before and once after that catch and run.

  78. Lurker John says:

    Yeah baby!

  79. unca_chuck says:

Gabbert seems to have settled down after Chip told him he’d be cleaning the toilets after the game.

  80. Lurker John says:

Bench Gabbert with a 3 touchdown lead? Not likely. Kap is nowhere near getting in there outside of an injury. It’s the first game, it’s going to be choppy at times. The Rams stepped up their D after halftime, both on the run and the pass. Bad third quarter, but he just led them on a 77 yard TD drive. He’ll get better.

  81. rtfirefly says:

Gabby’s played well enough to beat the Rams at home. You don’t bench a guy after a win like this. Wait till after the road games against the Panthers and Seahawks, THEN do it.

  82. Winder says:

chuck, i know we should be doing better with some things but the overall team looks pretty good. We all knew Gabbert was a ?, but once again our D shows up.

  83. Lurker John says:

This has been a very encouraging first game on both sides of the ball. The Rams are good defensively, but the O overall looks competent, without that deer-in-the-headlights look we’ve seen since Harbaugh left. There’s potential there and it can only get better with more work.

The D has been great against an inferior offense, we’ll see how they do against better teams. I think they’ll be fine too. There’s going to be ups and downs, but I’m pleased with the improvement. I don’t know how you couldn’t be, including Gabbert.

  84. unca_chuck says:

Where’s Mike Curtis when you need him?

  85. Lurker John says:

I’m just going to keep positive until they give me reason not to be. Kelly is in control, that much is obvious, and that’s a 180 degree about face from last year. You guys are being too hard on Gabbert. He’s made some good throws and he’s forced some. Keep working.

  86. unca_chuck says:

I just don’t get the 3rd quarter. Very conservative. No pocket movement to offset the smothering coverage. D shows 8 in the box and we run into it. We don’t spread the field with multiple WRs. Finally we move the pocket and do things differently and score.

Hey, all I’m saying is you can’t expect to go 3 and out 5-6 times in a row and expect the other team not to inflict damage. Yeah, the Rams are suck, but most teams would take advantage of the stagnation.

The Rams are getting Goff in there in a matter of days, not weeks.

Not really sure why we are amping it up now. Get Hyde out and run the ball.

  87. Lurker John says:

Niners, 2 penalties for 10 yds with 7 minutes left in the game.

  88. unca_chuck says:

Fisher’s team yet again is out of control, . Is was and will be a hack. Fisher has wasted more talent than any 5 coaches. And his players are out of control.

    • Lurker John says:

Whatever I said about Fisher a couple of weeks ago I should probably rescind. I was watching Hard Knocks and things looked pretty good. But now, it’s hard to see him coaching L.A. next year.

    • rtfirefly says:

If they played another quarter at this rate, the Niners would blow up the over/under. The Rams have completely given up. I can’t see well coached teams doing that, ever.

  89. unca_chuck says:

Wow. Didn’t think the Rams would be be THIS horrible.

  90. unca_chuck says:

Jesus. Get Hyde OUT OF THERE.

  91. unca_chuck says:

Nice he gets 2 TDs, but get him out,

  92. Lurker John says:

Yeah, Goff has to be in there pretty soon. And I agree, that third quarter won’t fly against good offenses. More stuff to work on. Gabbert, 22-35 for 170 yds and a TD and another 43 on the ground. Hyde, 23 carries for 88 yds and 2 TD’s.

  93. unca_chuck says:

That was Jerrod-Eddie that went down BTW. Berman is real bad these days.

  94. unca_chuck says:

Man, get Bowman out as well.
