The Season is Here!

Carolina travels to Sherpaland to open the 2016 season! The talk is over. The miasma of uncertainty  stops, and the real shit begins. Of course, the Niners are saved for the last game. Monday night vs the Rams.

To me this is a very important game. Given the tough schedule, this would appear to be the most winnable of the first 5. The. A k end isn’t as tough as the beginning, but all may be lost by then.

Well, enough talk. Play ball!

  1. 12th man says:

Yeah they need to beat a division rival at home. Funny thing, in this rivalry, when the Rams were in LA every game I went to in Anaheim was a win and every game at the Stick was a loss.

I hope the field of dreams does better.

Not going to this game but am going to the home Ram game Dec 24. Its my Christmas present to myself!

Trying for the Cowboys game too. Anybody going?

    • Berger says:

I went to almost every Ram-49er game at Anaheim in the 80’s. Was there for the John Taylor MNF game.

      • 12th man says:

I went up until they left, 1995 I think. I was pissed because I live in LA and that was an easy game to go to. That and I loved watching a beating of the Rams!
Glad they are back, Ram gear is in all the stores and lots of new jerseys in the bars during pre-season.
Tickets are expensive and hard to get right now, I am waiting till later in the year to buy, hopefully the shine will have worn off a bit.

Weird going back to the Coliseum, seen quite a few Raider games there.

  2. rob says:

Go Niners. Surprise the league and silence the naysayers

  3. Berger says:

Because I like what Baalke has done with the O and D lines I’m a bit more optimistic than most. I think we have a chance to have a very good run game. The variable is how good will the defense be. I think good except I am worried about the pass rush. If Eli Harold is a starter it is not a good thing. I think Tank moves to the starter within a game or two and Niners go 9-7.

    • rob says:

Dorsey will be in active and available Monday night according latest updates.

    • 12th man says:

I like 9-7 too, which has probably just jinxed it.

      • Berger says:

I really wanted to go 10-6 but I don’t trust the pass rush and Eli Harold. That situation could drop us to 5-11 but I’m sticking with 9-7 because I think Tank will be starting soon and Lynch will be back in 5 games.

      • 12th man says:

I would sit one of the ILB and use Rush on 3rd and long. Harold played better this pre-season, maybe he gets a second year bounce.

10 wins this year would be phenomenal given the schedule, the new coaching staff and so many new players.

      • Berger says:

Eli Harold did look a lot better this pre-season. I’ve elevated him past the Lemoneir status. Problem is he gets close to a play and doesn’t make the play. It would be OK if he was the one causing the disruption like Dial and Armstead do but he is the LB. He is supposed to clean up and he doesn’t.

  4. Winder says:

being a naysayer I am gonna go 3-13. I just don’t think we have the horses to keep up in this race.

Up until the 80’s we always had a hard time with the Rams at home. Never could understand it.

  5. rtfirefly says:

I’m sticking with 7-9. I nailed it last year (along with Grumpy) by being the first one to pick on Skeebs’ and sticking with it despite changing my mind about it every two days.

I was the first one to pick there this year again. I’m superstitious.

Though I may root for 0-16. We need WRs desperately, possibly a star RB depending on Hyde’s health, and barring an unforeseen comeback by Kappy, a QBOTF.

    • 12th man says:

What’s Grumpy got this year RT?

      • rtfirefly says:

I dunno. I haven’t spent much time over there of late except for throwing the occasional grenade. I’ll frequent the place more often once the Niner season starts and the BakkenBull show quiets down.

  6. unca_chuck says:

I e been around 8-8 and 9-7. Yeah 9-7 is the high water mark. I’ll say 8-8 with a healthy Hyde.

  7. unca_chuck says:

I don’t trust Baalke to draft a WR. We may have a new GM by then though.

  8. unca_chuck says:

I do like getting Streater and Kurley. Both have had very good years.

    • rtfirefly says:

When I think of Antonio Brown of the Steelers, Jordy Nelson of The Pack, Julio Jones of the Falcons, and especially the WR core of the Giants and the Broncos, then I look at our WRs, I just want to cry.

  9. Nipper says:

I predict 7-9 for the 49ers. Hey that’s better than last year.

  10. Winder says:

I am glad that most everyone see’s the team a little differently than i do. I really don’t see but 3 wins. I would like to know where we are gonna get 7 or 8. I hope we do, but I surely don’t need Prozac.

  11. Berger says:

Streater is an injury acquisition for Baalke. He had a foot fracture in 2014 which required surgery. Has played in only 4 games since. The strategy continues.

  12. Berger says:

Tonight’s game features a WR I very much wanted to draft. Kelvin Benjamin. He tore an ACL last year, let’s see how he does. Baalke should have traded for him instead of Streater. First off, he had a torn ACL, that qualifies him. 2nd, the Panthers have 2 inexperienced CBs in their secondary. We have a lot of good CBs to trade.

To throw salt on the wound, the Panthers have another WR I wanted, Devin Funchess.

  13. Winder says:

I still think Jax has the best duo in WR’s. last year 24 tds between the both of them

  14. Winder says:

Just read the charges the DA filed against Miller 7 felonies and just to add a little insult a couple mistormeanors(sp). They really want to nail him. Have a nice day Miller.

    • Nipper says:

Miller needs a Clarence Darrow type of lawyer. I hope his defense is better than ” I was drunk, I don’t remember a thing.”

  15. rtfirefly says:

Watching the Panthers and the Broncos tonight and remembering the Niners of last year, it’s hard to believe we’re all in the NFL together. They’re just in another league.

Based on one half of football only, the Broncs’ rook 7th round starting QB looks like a steal and a half.

    • Berger says:

He had an ACL tear and did not think he would be drafted. Broncos took a chance.

      • rtfirefly says:

Aha, didn’t know that. Paxton Lynch has got to be sweating at least a little bit.

      • rtfirefly says:

Of course, just after I write that, Siemian throws his second pick, this one really, really stupid.

      • rtfirefly says:

After watching the replay, it wasn’t a stupid pass. As he was about to get creamed, he had a receiver open for a TD and just couldn’t plant and throw, underthrew it – not nearly as bad as I thought on first look.

  16. rtfirefly says:

Andy Lee with a 76 yard punt on the fly. Glad we got rid of rid, geez.

  17. rtfirefly says:

    *rid of him

  18. rtfirefly says:

If Elway isn’t the best GM in the league, I don’t know who is. Living in NM, I remember vividly the Broncos team when he took over. This team, moreso than the Panthers who rely so much on Cam, is LOADED with talent.

  19. Lurker John says:

I stink at making predictions so I’m not going to bother with it here, but 3-13 is taking the downside too far. The new staff and revamped OL alone should make last year’s record viable. Why not just blow your brains out now and get it over with? Then you wouldn’t have to suffer through a miserable 3-13 season.

I think anything around .500 is a reasonable prediction.

    • Winder says:

Lol, I don’t take it that seriously anymore. Been through some real low times with this team and this is just another one.

  20. Lurker John says:

I absolutely did not miss the vapid Cris Collinsworth during the off season. I can only take him in very small doses. Michaels has deteriorated by sheer association.

  21. rtfirefly says:

Oh, Wow! What an ending to a great game!

  22. Berger says:

The Niners are ahead of the Panthers for the play-off chase!

  23. unca_chuck says:

Shit, watching Denver beat Carolina gives me hope a conservative offense can do enough. Granted Siemens day looks like a shitty Kappy one (178 yards, 1 TD and 2 picks) but there you have it. Denver wins. Load up the fucking defense. CJ got 96 yards. Whoopie.

They should have lost that game but what the fuck. Winner winner chicken dinner.

    • rtfirefly says:

Carolina has an excellent defense. They went 17-2 last year. The only reason Denver only scored 21 points was because of 3 turnovers, 2 of which – the RB’s fumble killing the first drive and Siemian’s INT that just missed being a TD – cost them points.

If that’s conservative, I’ll take conservative all day long.

  24. unca_chuck says:

Elway’s a cheapskate. He has drafted very well though. Even the Denver scribes call this season a wash. 8-8.

  25. rob says:

    Hey it’s football season. Where’s DENNIS ?

  26. Nipper says:

That was nice seeing a real NFL game on TV last night. I hope the 49ers are ready for Monday Night. At least be up and ready to roll for the Rams!

  27. Winder says:

OMG and La De Da. Go NINERS!!!!!!!!!

  28. Nipper says:

I guess this thread starts with Winder. Bullygoaty is nuts and should be locked up for his own good. Perhaps the drugs are finally gone and the inner rage is flowing out like a dragons breath.

  29. Nipper says:

There’s the state of being nuts and then there is that special state of pure lunacy called the “The V State of MInd”, where hate is mixed with mindless bullshit to create these special lunatic posts.

  30. rtfirefly says:

Remember the old vaudeville saying, “Never follow an animal act!” Well, …

  31. rtfirefly says:

    12th, Grumpy picked 3-13.

  32. unca_chuck says:

Wow, poor V has this as his outlet. Poor sap. Stupid as a bag of dicks, but hey.

  33. Nipper says:

    Beat LA!

  34. Lurker John says:

Good game last night. I’m ready for some Niner’s football. The Giants are circling the drain, so bring on the NFL. Clean slate for the boys, some hot young talent, new coaching staff, I’m pumped for game one and the new season. That may only last 3 weeks, but for now I’m ready to go.

Chuck, RT’s 12:07 should be post of the day. Instant classic.

LET’S GO 49ERS! BEAT THE GODDAMN LAMBS!!

  35. Lurker John says:

Game 1 is always a good time of year because I throw on my bright red 49er ball cap (fucker shines like a light house on a foggy night) and piss off all the Seahawks fans at work.

  36. unca_chuck says:

The only girls he knows are inflatable.

  37. rtfirefly says:

Since Chuck started this blog, I’ve only ever had one POTD and Chuck gave me that one out of pity after I kept nagging him about it.

  38. Nipper says:

    In Chipper we trust.

  39. Lurker John says:

Fucks, I just went to SFGate and there’s a picture splashed across the sports page that shows Kilgore lying prone and in a lot of pain. It was from last year!

  40. Flavor says:

AD absent from practice, not injury related. I have said since he came back that he doesn’t really want this. We’ll see what the reason is but I, for one, won’t spend a second counting on him. He doesn’t give a shit about playing football, he’s all about those checks…..

    • Flavor says:

i mean, i could tell that just following him on twitter for a couple of years. Why would the Niners set themselves up for this guy to fuck them again? Desperation?

      • rtfirefly says:

Did you see their O-line last year? Baalke was trying to save another high draft choice.

      • 12th man says:

He is talented. Looks like a spotlight grab to me, Trent Brown is getting a lot of praise as RT and AD is maybe a bit jealous. Problem for him his the Niners have a guy right behind him, Tiller, who can step right in.

  41. rtfirefly says:

I haven’t followed it, but AD was a huge road grader tackle. He may be finding that he sucks as a zone blocking guard.

  42. Irish Kevin says:

12th man, I have season tickets, so I will be at the Cowboy game.

  43. NJ49er says:

Nice piece on TBrown – Screw blocking sleds in the off-season.
He used his Yukon Denali. NICE!

    http://tinyurl.com/j6z56vm

  44. rtfirefly says:

One thing to remember this year. Touchbacks on kickoffs come out to the 25.
OK, two things. There is a no longer a “probable” on the injury list. So expect to see zillions of “questionables”.

    • NJ49er says:

1st kicker to perfect a parachute kick to drop inside the 5, that gives coverage enough hang time to get there, wins that battle.
Squib kicks might be too tough to control relative to going OoB and giving them additional yardage.
The perfect plan is to force a return somehow.

  45. unca_chuck says:

The NFL in its brilliance of noticing that tons of players get hurt on kick returns change the rules to make them more likely.

I mean, they moved the kickoff line from the 30 to the 35 to encourage touch backs. Used to be the 40 back in the day. Now this? Dumb.

Newton gets speared in the helmet 4 times and the refs are like, meh. They Offset the penalty on that play because of the intentional grounding. Mixed signals anyone?

    • Nipper says:

      BLEEP!

    • rtfirefly says:

The two in the second half that really hurt Cam were technically penalties. But Cam was ducking down on both plays. Consider this: Cam is the strongest and arguably the most elusive QB in the league as well as the best runner. You’re a defender coming in hard and fast, trying to nail him before he jukes away, and he ducks. What’re supposed to do, stop?

    • NJ49er says:

Marv Levy’s term, Over-Officious Jerks comes to mind Chuck.
They’re clueless minions for Goodell and The Billionaire Boys Club.
No idea what’s going on from an Officiating perspective anymore.
Everything becomes a League investigation after the fact, and apologies or fines are handed out.

  46. Nipper says:

Is AD going to play in the Rams game? Or is he retired for that game? Will Kap encourage more players to take a knee during the anthem? Can Chipper forge an offense out of the Niners? Will our RB hold up under the pounding? Questions……questions never end.

  47. rtfirefly says:

Alex is getting smacked hard at home by the Chargers – early, early, early surprise.

  48. NJ49er says:

    Holtzman from ESPN –

Dolphins RB Arian Foster just told me he plans to take a knee and raise his fist during the national anthem today in Seattle. He said some of his teammates will join him. Foster said Dolphins players met on Friday and agreed to make their own decision on how to handle today’s anthem.

  49. NJ49er says:

SD WR Keenan Allen knee injury?
    Anyone see it?
Reports suggest it could be serious.

  50. rtfirefly says:

The Raiders better fix their problems defending the deep ball or it’s going to be a long season. This, when the AFC West and indeed, the whole AFC, is up for grabs this year.

  51. unca_chuck says:

Jesus. The NFL has to come up with PI calls that make sense. I’m no Raider fan, but they’ve been hosed on 2 consecutive pass plays.

  52. unca_chuck says:

AD? Who knows? I thought he was doing the right things by asking to move to RG. What he’s doing now is beyond me.

Raiders block a FG and it still goes through

    • rtfirefly says:

Undead Al’s dead though I still despise Raider fans. I like Reggie McKenzie and how he’s improved the team. I like Carr. But they’re not the Niners and never will be.

    • rtfirefly says:

That being said, the alternatives to root for in the AFC don’t do much for me, might as well be the Raiders.

  53. unca_chuck says:

Crabs just did something that drives me nuts. Crabs runs his route and is wide open underneath. Carr scrambles, so Crabs turns his back to his QB and runs toward a safety and into coverage. Don’t get it. If he had just sat, Carr could have found him.

  54. unca_chuck says:

Wow. Raiders going for 2? Go for the win on the road? Del Rio doesn’t trust his defense?

  55. unca_chuck says:

Crabs redeems himself. Then unredeems himself for the unsportsmanlike for excessive celebration.

    • rtfirefly says:

Freakin’ unbelievable. Add the two muffed passes in the last minute before the TD and you’ve got a team trying to lose. Carr’s gotta be PIZZED.

  56. unca_chuck says:

    Seabass saves Crabs’ bacon.

  57. unca_chuck says:

Raiders go soft and give up 22 yards.

    • rtfirefly says:

They haven’t had a pass rush since very early in the game. Brees has been tearing them up but it was the two quick TDs that killed them. They can’t defend the pass.

  58. rtfirefly says:

Wow, great (?!?!?!) road win for the Raiders. Going for 2 at the end looks really good now!

  59. unca_chuck says:

Damn. Saint kicker almost got it. Del Rio is nothing if not ballsy. Go for the win on the road I suppose.

  60. unca_chuck says:

Khalil Mack was prety much neutralized.

Chiefs have a shot to win in OT after getting beat most of the game. Couple good AFC West games. That Div may be a sleeper division.

  61. rtfirefly says:

Meanwhile, the Chargers have completely self destructed in the 4th qtr and OT. Alex is about to pull a win out of the jaws of defeat.

  62. unca_chuck says:

Smith with the read-option TD run. How ironic.

  63. rtfirefly says:

Broncs, Raiders, and Chiefs all pulled out wins in games they should have lost. More of the same from the Chargers.

  64. Winder says:

the Chargers have done nothing but choke since forever.

  65. Winder says:

actually, i am happy for the soon to be Las Vegas Raiders.

  66. 12th man says:

AD is no longer playing guard, he will be a back up tackle left and right. Tiller it is.

  67. unca_chuck says:

Miami should be up by 10.

  68. unca_chuck says:

Seattle is guessing very well at Miami’s goal line plays. Till then.

They went 5 wide and ran up the middle. What a concept.

  69. unca_chuck says:

A lot of good games today. NYG/Dal is gi=oing well. I thought dal would be better off with Dak anyway.

  70. rtfirefly says:

Damned Wilson – two 4th downs on that go ahead drive. Here I was all set to celebrate the Seahawks alone in the NFC West basement. Ach, so… Maybe next year.

  71. unca_chuck says:

Miami had a lot of chances to score.

  72. unca_chuck says:

Looks like the refs want the Cards to win. There was no hold on that play.

  73. unca_chuck says:

NE’s defense is way too soft.

  74. unca_chuck says:

Again, NEs defense is playing way too soft.

  75. unca_chuck says:

NE needs to go aggro on this play.

  76. rtfirefly says:

Niners can gain on AZ and the Lambs tomorrow night. Every little bit helps.

  77. NJ49er says:

Any chance Baalke asked AD to restructure his deal from OT to OG numbers in the past several days?

    • NJ49er says:

I’m willing to bet he was given the chance to reclaim his position from TBrown and failed to do so.
Hence, he chose to reconsider retirement as opposed to considering a reduced salary.
Gotta put him back on the potential ‘to be Traded List’ I’d suspect?
Can’t see he and Kaep getting starter money at backup positions.

      • NJ49er says:

If he’s de-acted tonight it could be a precursor to that end?
There’s some sort of clause involved with Contracts being validated after game 1 I believe.
Not sure if that can be circumvented with a de-act designation?

  78. Lurker John says:

WTF is Davis doing? This screwball team is a never ending soap opera. And of the eve of the season opener. These rabble rousers need to jerk their heads out of their asses and concentrate on the job at hand: FOOTBALL!

    • NJ49er says:

I’m willing to bet he came back to collect on the deal he walked out on last year Lurker John.
Baalke likely said, earn it from TBrown.
Didn’t happen, as we know and, I’d venture to speculate that Baalke said you’re an OG now, reduce your pay accordingly.

  79. NJ49er says:

Just can’t make sense of the complete 180-flip AD made days ahead of seeing his first potential action after a year away other than Baalke lobbing that sort of grenade into his lap perhaps?
Can’t believe anything reported through the Press anymore with these drama Queens at 4949.

    • NJ49er says:

Especially with all the fodder associated with AD and the Tweets directed at Baalke and others while he was away last year.
Baalke likely waited for his shot at redemption.
Pay back is a B!tch as they say.

  80. NJ49er says:

There’s some sort of practice associated with Contracts being guaranteed after week 1.
Let’s see if AD gets de-acted tonight as a potential maneuver around that Contract practice.

  81. rtfirefly says:

NJ, you called it. The Patriots killed the Cards last night on parachute kicks. Special teams really gave them a leg up in their razor close win.

    • NJ49er says:

The good teams play chess while the also-rans play checkers RT.
When the League changes something, the Coaches look to adjust.
Nothing for nothing in this game.
      Earn your yardage.

      • rtfirefly says:

I’m not sure about the sixth, but five kickoff returns didn’t make it back to the 25. One wound up at the 8. Arians mentioned getting awful field position in his presser.

      • NJ49er says:

That’s the name of the game.
        Make’m earn their yards.
Belichick and Co have been around the NFL Block for awhile.
They know what they’re doing and prepare better than most in this game.

  82. Nipper says:

The so-called experts predict a Rams win. Niners better get it together for game day. Beat the Lambs! Show some pride! AD should either shut-up or quit. He’s a fool. Next he’ll be taking a knee at the anthem. BOO HOO!

    • NJ49er says:

I gotta believe this is money related Nipper.
We’ll find out one way or another.
Can’t do a 180 after stating you ‘offered’ to move to OG, only to balk.
Betting Baalke put some heat on AD for sticking him last year after the Draft.

      • NJ49er says:

Baalke is probably enjoying his turn at the wheel so to speak.
He’s watched his returning 1st RD OT losing out to a bargain rack 7th RD Pick making pennies on the dollar by comparison.
Can’t see this backup role lasting too long with the existing Contract attached for AD.

  83. Lurker John says:

GO 49ERS!! LET’S TOUCH THIS FUCKER OFF!!

  84. 12th man says:

Game day at last, GO NINERS!!!!

  85. Lurker John says:

Let us have a little ROASTED LAMB at mid-field!

  86. Nipper says:

Rams announcer calls Levi game a “can’t lose” for the Lambs if they’re going to contend this season. Next week they’re having a big deal in LA against the Sea Hawks.

  87. unca_chuck says:

Pardon the expression, NJ, but that’s pure suppositional bullshit on your part. If it was about money for AD, he would have screamed it from the mountains that he was being short-shrifted.

  88. unca_chuck says:

AD did the same thing last year, NJ, and it wasn’t about money then. He seems to have an overarching need to be talked about.

  89. Winder says:

All I ask is that Gabby throws 10+ yard passes and that Gurly comes down with the flu. And that maybe Hyde can make it through the whole game. That’s not too much to ask. Go Niners!!!!!!

  90. rtfirefly says:

RG III put on IR. The Factory of Sadness marches on. I feel really sorry for Hue Jackson, who I like a lot. He’s gonna be so screwed.

  91. rtfirefly says:

My favorite trivia of the day: Carson Wentz was the first rook to start opening day for the Iggles since 1939. 1939! My parents were in high school then.

  92. rtfirefly says:

Second place: The Browns won on opening day. in 2004! The Factory of Sadness marches on.

  93. unca_chuck says:

New thread is up. Yeah heard about RG III. That’s tough. Hard to revive your career in the mistake by the lake.

Stop Gurley and you stop the Rams.
