Yes! The Preseason is OVER ! ! !

The Niners won a thrilling (zzzzzzzzzzzz) contest of wills and flags in Sandy Eggo as the backups from SF beat the backups of SD 31-21. 2-2 in these meaningless games, but the takeaway from this game is that no one got hurt.

Colin Kaepernick afro’ed himself  into a middling performance that didn’t change any minds about the pecking order. Blaine Gabbert is our starter, Kaepernick is the backup. After that, Jeff Drisekll looked horrible, throwing 2 pick in 3 passes in a bad 3rd quarter stretch. Christina Ponder continues to impress against the backup brigade, throwing passes to WRs and generally looking like he should stick. Over Driskell? Yes.

Other that that, the other hot players coming out of camp are Marcus Rush and Mike Davis. But for two fumbles, Davis would be even more of a shoe-in for the back-up RB spot. That should be his.  Carlos Hyde is once again a question mark, and Shaun Draughn is battling a rib injury himself, so Davis, and possibly Kelvin Taylor, will make the squad.

WR is a big question mark as well, but Kerley made a few nice catches from CK. Beyond Torrey Smith and Kerley, we got a lot of young guys. Dres Anderson had a clutch catch on the goal line on the 1st drive, and after that? Unsure.

For the D line, Ronald Blair had another solid game, and the D line in general has played well despite losing Ian Williams, and Dorsey’s uncertain status. DBs as well. No surprises there.  I was a little surprised to see Kenneth Acker traded, but we have a soliod group of defenders.

Optimistic? Who knows? I’d like to be, but this season has been way too wacky to be realistic. Will Kappy get cut? No. Despite the hooraw, he’s better than Driskell. Ponder? Well, that’s harder to tell, but I think they carry all three at this point. Kelly can’t afford to be caught short-handed with all the weirdness circling the team. Still think this could be an 8-8 team if they can get healthier and not get too many injuries.

Pre-season games are tiresome. They should be replaced asap. Boo hiss!

  2. Winder's avatar Winder says:

HaI ve we even seen a first team defense yet? I guess GB put some out there. There are way to many distractions/injuries facing us at the moment to even consider any regular continuity. I think we will implode when we face some tough teams. I just don’t see us doing very well this year. 3-13.

  3. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Well, you underestimate the shittiness of other teams. I say 7-9.

This team looks organized at least. Hey, maybe we crater. I can have a little hope now. Tell ya one thing, we’ll beat the Rams to start the season.

  4. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Yeah this team may be 3-13 but think of all the fine discourses that will take place before the games as Kap becomes the new spokesperson for life, liberty, and justice for all!

We ended the PS with some faux-mentum.
    Whoop Dee Fuk’n Doo.
Kaep still looks like he got benched last year for a reason.
Nothing changed but his Politics apparently.
He should’ve learned as quickly with Warner.

So far we have two QBs. I know one of them will not be Driskel.

Last night was brutal. Lo Co Jr has been praising Driskel all TC and pre-season, repeatedly saying he is the best QB on the team. I didn’t see much from Jr this morning on the subject.

Its no sure thing they put him on the PS.

  7. Winder's avatar Winder says:

I am gonna look for every bright spot on this team that I can. Hopefully, by the end of the year we get a new GM that can get us back to respectability. And, an owner that just writes checks. And maybe that lemonade stand in Hell wouldn’t be so bad.

The only way we beat the fucking Rams is if Gurley Breaks his leg.

  8. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

If any of you guys feel oppressed perhaps you can get in line for that million bucks Kap professes to give away. That’s one expensive sit-in!

  9. 12th man's avatar 12th man says:

My best guess is its Grabbernick and Ponder gets cut with an outside chance they dump Crapernick and keep Gabbert and Ponder.

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Ponder should stay based on what he showed. Driskell? PS him or cut him. He played against the 3s and looked terrible.

  11. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I would cut Kap so we don’t have to chance paying him 14.5 mil next year and keep Gabs and Ponder. Driskel looked good this preseason but he needs to develop. The 2 ints were a good thing to insure nobody claims him before we stash him on the PS.

  12. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

If Winder is right about those three wins for the Niners let them be against the Lambs. I’m an optimist and hopeful of at least seven or eight wins. That’s still very bad but this is a young team. Hopefully Kelly and his coaches are smarter than last season’s pathetic bunch of fools.

  13. Winder's avatar Winder says:

when is final cut anyway? it can’t come soon enough

  14. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Reminder from Honda: Don’t text and drive.

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Sharks and Dubs both lose game 7s. The Giants are in the middle of an epic collapse.

    The Niners?

Yikes. For all the recent success, this has been a brutal year for Bay Area sports fans.

  16. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I’ll repeat what I said a couple of weeks ago, the Giants should change their name to the DeBergs because they play just well enough to lose.

  17. 12th man's avatar 12th man says:

Maiocco says Crapernick makes the roster, probably. Dare they keep 3 QB’s?

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yup. I think Driskell goes to the taxi squad. So that would be 4.
