Sooooo, Are We a .500 Team?

The oddsmakers and naysayers are having a field day breaking down the 49ers, their tough schedule, and the fact that they are not favored in any of their games so far, uh, before anything has really happened. Take the grains of salt, or boulders if you will, but this is putting the cart about 120 yards in front of the horse. The thought process for me goes like this: We will get a fairly big bump in offensive production , say 500th place to around 15th. Something middle of the road. The defense on the other hand, should be able to play more consistently with a better coaching staff, and more depth. This of course is predicated on avoiding all the injuries that have waylaid the team these past couple years.

So ARE we a .500 team? It certainly isn’t unprecedented. Harbaugh did it. Albeit with a stocked team that Hammerin’ Highball Scotty built. We  certainly HAVE talent, and in all hopes a decent coaching staff, and turnarounds in the NFL happen every season, so it could happen. Will it? I say sure. I don;t think we are a playoff team like I thought the 2011 team was. Mainly because it was so stocked with talent. We aren’t quite there yet talent-wise, but a good season that shows the team is on the right track, and maybe a good draft next year, will assuage the creeping fears and doubts.

All this hoohaw over the schedule doesn’t take into account the fact that the NFL is parity’s bitch and year to year, teams rise and fall like the tide. I think AZ is on a downtrend. Carson Palmer was a trainwreck in the playoffs, and I think that trend follows him into this season as he’s one year older and slower. The Rams are the fucking Lambs until they actually prove they are more than their endless hype. They’ve been on the rise for 10 years now and have not reached the playoffs in the last 11 seasons.  Seattle remains the cream of the division, but even they are getting weaker defensively, and now that Beast Mode is gone, we’ll see how that affects their season.

I see the Bears, Dolphins, Bucs, and Bills as winnable. Two from the Rams, and one from AZ, and throw in the overrated Cowboys, and there’s 8. Hey, maybe lightning will strike and we take one in Seattle.

And NoFear, glad to have you back in the land of the living.

We are capable of going 10-6. You heard it here first.

Great news from camp. Armstead and Smelter are looking great. Those are key to us getting better IMO.

        Yer killin’ me, Nip.

No fears old prediction of somewhere between 6-10 and 10-6 actually makes sense this year.

This team has little depth, but is stronger than last year. With an njury free season we ahould be decent.

Great news from camp. Armstead and Smelter are looking like starter material. That would be huge IMO!!!

    Great news about NF!

Kelley took a 4-12 Andy Reid team and won 10 and the division his first year. I picked 7-9 a while back and am not the least bit confident about it. It could go anywhere from 5 wins to 10. Too many variables, most notably 500x better coaching but also including a vastly improved O-line and the AFC and NFC South on the schedule. I had been seriously debating with myself of late as to whether or not to up the ante to 8 or even 9 wins. I’ll wait and see for now.

AZ’s defense is still worlds better than the Niners, and then there’s the Hawks. Toss in the Panthers and that’s 5 losses right off the bat. Then we get the soph seasons of Mariota and Winston. Hmmm…

I predict what will be will be.

    D-line looking pretty good with
Armstead, Dial, Buckner, Purcell and hopefully Dorsey. Sure miss big Ian tho.
Love to see us make a trade but doubt it. Maybe we add a big vet run stuffer after final cuts ?

  7. Winder says:

Glad to hear about nofear. Let the fun begin. I still think we are underdogs in all our games unless Vegas has lightened up a little. Anyway, what the fuck do they know.

  8. Nipper says:

PHUCK! Constant Fear is still alive? The stress should have done him in. Being on Skeebers blog was too much pressure!

  9. unca_chuck says:

Smelter wood be nice. He’s got size and speed.

  10. NJ49er says:

High water mark for me right now is 6-10.
I’d like to be proven wrong of course.

  11. Winder says:

At this point I still can’t see over 4 wins. I just hope that we can be in every game into the 4th quarter. Our defense used to come to the rescue all the time. Our biggest problem over the last few years is the inability to adjust our defense and offense on the run. It’s like we just run into a brick wall and keep trying to pound through it. Anyway, I think we will at least be entertaining this year.

    • NJ49er says:

It will be a no pressure year IMO Winder.
No expectations, new Coaches, plenty of youth etc.
As you suggest, just look organized and, play 60 minutes.
This Staff HAS to be miles ahead of the bush league ensemble we trotted out there last year.
      At least, that’s my hope…

  12. unca_chuck says:

Well, that’s the rub, NJ/Winder. If last year’s team could win 5, certainly this one can do a couple better. If only for the offense that should improve.

  13. unca_chuck says:

I think a big problem last year WAS the coaching. Some games the defense was great and the offense sucked. Some games the defense sucked and the offense sucked. Basically the offense sucked.

A fair to middling offense would have won a couple more games last year. If we can do that this year, then we should notch 3 more.

The games I look at last year are the Giants, GB, and AZ. With any kind of offensive consistency we could have won those games. 3 wins = 8-8.

    It isn’t too far-fetched.

Funny thing is, some people don’t understand that they do this for EVERY NFL team.

  15. Nipper says:

Prediction for next season: 9-7 based on nothing with little thought behind it. BLEEP!

  16. NJ49er says:

Maiocco is reporting through sources that the 9ers have extended NaVorro Bowman.
    Great move!

  17. NJ49er says:

I got in touch with someone close to the 9er Organization that we met in Canton back in ’10, when Jerry went into the HOF, asking about the upcoming Induction for Eddie.
Part of the reply I received –
“I just got a call from Eric Wright who said every player that’s still breathing will be there. Eddie reserved an area in the stadium for his private party”.
One last hoorah for The Dynasty Era 9ers.
    Can’t wait!

Saturday night, raise a glass to Eddie!

  18. rob says:

    Good move.

    NJ
Eric Wright is one of my all time favorite niners .
Party hearty sat night ? YEAH !!!

  19. unca_chuck says:

That would be awesome to crash that shit. Take plenty of pics, NJ. including any mug shots.

  20. Berger says:

Alameda Ta’amu was waived by the KC Chiefs when they signed Foles. I don’t know if he is any good but he is a 6’3″ 350lb NT. Might be worth kicking the tires.

  21. unca_chuck says:

I thought I heard we signed a waived CB this morning but I can’t find it anywhere.
