Joshua Garnett Inked to Deal

Well, the Niners have signed all their 11 picks from the 2016 draft as Joshua Garnett signed a 4 year deal about ah hour ago. Nice to do since camp starts tomorrow.

Not much else to say, but we are getting close to actual practice games. I really wonder how this QB thing works out. The hope is Kappy is laying off the weights and doing some mental gymnastics. Beyond that, there’s a lot of position battles to be won. Especially in the defensive backfield.

let the fun begin. “Down so low it looks like up to me.”

  2. 12th man says:

Nothing about Anthony Davis back on the 90 or losing Ian Williams for the year? What kind of music blog is this anyway?

    • Nipper says:

      Sour notes keep coming.

    • rob says:

Fuck we got Anthony Davis back but lost In Williams. Damn without big # 93 in the middle IMHO we’re fucked. He graded out as one of the top five NT’s over the second half of last season. Maybe we can pull a trade ?

      • 12th man says:

Still have Dorsey coming back from injury, Purcell got some quality time at NT and looked promising last year and Dial is solid if not spectacular in a pinch. Not to say Williams wasn’t a good talent and won’t be missed but he’s injured way too much.

  3. 12th man says:

TC started BTW, players in the house.

New coach and staff, some solid looking draft picks on the line, Kap and Gabbert going at it, one of the most promising young RB in the league Hyde. The line gets Kilgore back starting and Staley/Davis at tackle? O line should be way better. Finally going to see younger WR going at it for starting positions. Oh and a newly minted assistant GM trying on Balk’s shoes for size.

    Looks at least interesting right?

  4. Nipper says:

    Hark! The Giants won today!

  5. NJ49er says:

Looks like they covered the loss of Ian with a former Eagle on the DL –

Guess we’ll see what Purcell’s got. A healthy Dorsey would be nice ..

  7. 12th man says:

First interview of TC with Chip. Refreshing after suffering the “battle” for info from Harbaugh and trying to decipher the babble of Tomsula, to hear a regular football coach speak.

  8. Berger says:

Might need to look into NT Cam Thomas. Does he have anything left?

  9. Berger says:

From Cam Inman- Anthony Davis says he weighs 332 pounds, down from 365-370 in 2014 season — “I don’t know how I played at that (weight) either.”

  10. 12th man says:

Chip Kelly says Kap and Gabbert will split all reps 50/50. Looks like a real competition.

  11. unca_chuck says:

Sucks to see Williams out for the year. We have a lot of d linemen tho. But he’s as close as we got to the fat man in the middle.

Shit as far as AD goes we need all the one help we can get. If he can adjust to a faster line at a lighter weight, I’m totally fine with fhat. He’s a known talent at least.

  12. Berger says:

Davis and Garnett lined up next to each other on the 3rd team O-line. A coincidence or is this actually the staff trying to get some chemistry because this is actually the projected starting line-up?

  13. NJ49er says:

We list 2 guys on the Full Roster as NT’s
    Mike Purcell 6-3/303 and,
    Garrison Smith 6-1/300.
Definitely would fit the ‘fireplug’ height, but, still light IMO.
Heck, Quinton Dial is listed at 6-5/318, Dorsey 6-1/297.

    Guess it’s me?
I always favored guys like Wilfork, even though he’s been listed at 325, he seemed more like 340 to me.
I guess it’s all about one’s ability to corkscrew themselves into the turf and hold the point.
Soap did a nice job at that.
Michael Carter wasn’t a heavy guy either.
    Ted Washington? He’d qualify….

    • NJ49er says:

Depends on the scheme we run too.
More active would suggest lighter/nimbler weights perhaps?

Trent Brown still wins the posted weight contest at 355.

    • Berger says:

Michael Carter was listed at 295. I have no doubt he was well over 300.

Vince Wilfork was at least 360. He had a huge head that looked little on his body. We have been cursed at NT since we passed on Wilfork, traded Down twice and took a WR Rahaun Woods, who never worked out.

With our trade downs we picked up an extra mid round pick and took Sopoaga. He was OK but not Wilfork.

  14. NJ49er says:

Gotta keep an eye open for Rookie DT Darren Lake from ‘Bama too.
    6-3/315

  15. Winder says:

With so much unproven talent on this team I think coaching is what will make or break this season. The coaches have to utilize every bit of a players strengths and hopefully they all buy in. Baby steps. I am starting to warm up to the Chipski though I like what he had to say yesterday and the way he said it.

  16. NJ49er says:

Berger I was about to look for your local Dairy Association’s contact information, to see whether they still marketed milk cartons with missing persons photos.
Haven’t seen you around these parts for so long, I thought you might have been abducted, or worse 😀

As for AD and the 3rd string OL assignment..
Chip indicated that he’s working on a ‘clean slate’.
Translation? He’s a newbie, with a chance to prove himself all over again.
Can’t hurt to have him working with Garnett simply for some Veteran leadership either.
Haven’t heard much about Trent Brown’s current weight either.
Early reports from minicamp suggested he was struggling to keep up due to his size.
Did read tonight that he was part of the 1st string OL, which I’ll assume bodes well for his conditioning.
AD had better put his game face on.
No reason to assume much, after his extended absence but, he should have enough of a skill set to beat out Tiller or Brown.
    Should be an interesting Camp.

    • NJ49er says:

      From Maiocco –

The 49ers’ first-team offensive line consisted of left tackle Joe Staley, left guard Zane Beadles, center Daniel Kilgore, right guard Andrew Tiller and right tackle Trent Brown. The second O-line was Erik Pears, Ian Silberman, Marcus Martin, Brandon Thomas and John Theus, while the third group was Colin Kelly, Fahn Cooper, Alex Balducci, Joshua Garnett and Anthony Davis.

      • NJ49er says:

Hope AD has kept his ‘nasty’ streak.
Still think he’d make a great OG.

      • Berger says:

I think we have an explanation why AD looked so bad in 2014. Between the injuries and weighing over 365 lbs I’m surprised he was even on the field. I would expect he will be our starting RT on Sept 12.

  17. rob says:

Our eventual starting Online will probably be
Staley Beadles Kilgore Garnett Davis. With T Brown and G Tiller backing up.
    Not bad at all.

  18. rob says:

Can Thomas was signed by the Rams in June.

  19. unca_chuck says:

Hey, I’m just glad Kilgore Trout is healthy and ready to go. He’s been the biggest part of the line play in recent memory. When he goes down, the line suffers.

    • 12th man says:

Exactly, poor QB play by Kap exactly mirrored Kilgore’s absence. Interesting to me from what little we have heard about the QB play is that it was even productivity, a surprise since Gabbert had all the off season reps to date.
Tells me Kap understands the scheme.

I expect Kap to win the competition and from watching him on the podium I see he expects to win it too.

Gabbert on the other hand seemed a little defensive, less confident, when asked about Kap.

A lot to read into one day but telling all the same.

  20. unca_chuck says:

If Jim Harbaugh proved anything, it;s that a new coach can install a new system in pretty short order. His first year was the strike-shortened minicamp shortened cluster fuck of an offseason.

Granted his changes weren’t as different as Chip’s up-tempo system is, but you have to think Chip is still in the process of developing a better way to work his system into this team.

That’s the hope anyway. Hyde has to stay on the field and we have to get all the WRs involved. Kappy? Gabbert? That remains to be seen.

  21. Winder says:

Hate to see Duffy go he was one of my favorites. But getting Moore might just take em over the top. We shall see.

  22. Nipper says:

Yeah somebody had to walk the plank. Hey what about that Puig for the Dodgers? He’s MIA.

  23. 12th man says:

Day 2 and Kap outplayed Gabbert, who threw a pick six to Jimmy ward.

    • Winder says:

Gabbert is a mediocre QB, he has all the tools but just have that spark. i would love to see Kappy having some fun and loving being a Niner again. If that happens we really should be ok.

  24. Winder says:

Lol, yeah they are having a hard time unloading him. A legend in his own mind.

  25. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, too funny. Couldn’t happen to a douchier guy.

  26. unca_chuck says:

Apparently the reports of NoFear’s untimely demise have been greatly exaggerated.

He emailed me yesterday. . . Let the games begin ! ! !

    • rob says:

Great news. I figured we couldn’t get rid of that tough old bastard that easy

      • rob says:

D-line revamped and looking pretty good even without big In.
Buckner, Dial, Armstead and Purcell. With hopefully a healthy Dorsey in the rotation too.

  27. unca_chuck says:

    New thread is up.

  28. rob says:

Still bummed about losing In Williams tho. I’d be tickled pink if we tried to trade for a NT
