The Edge of Wetness

Free agency is over. The draft is over. All that’s left before the season starts is training camp and preseason. The 49ers shitcanned an entire coaching staff (have fun with your $10 mill, Jimmy T!) and hired an offensive guru who will bring his hyperdrive offense to the Team Under the Bay.  I even speculated months before it happened that it would be mildly interesting to see how Colin Kaepernick and Chip Kelly could run a mobile wide open offense.

However, the brain trust (insert Abby Normal joke here) bad-mouthed and whisper-trashed Kaepernick for half of last season before overvaluing him this offseason and demanding too much, and eventually crying uncle while Kappy still gets paid. Kappy did his own balloon-floating by stating his desire to go to the Jets.A no-go as the Jets are still courting Ryan Fitzpatrick (and his evil twin/lover Patrick Fitzryan) Denver diddled around and didn’t pull the trigger, and so here we are. With an untested offense, a disgruntled quarterback who has a huge distrust of the front office, and oh yeah, a right tackle who is engaging in his own tweet battle with the front office.

Sure, we’re stable. Stable as Kim Jong Ill.  The question is, do we have reason to be optimistic? Teams around us appear to be treading water. Seattle lost beast mode. Although his replacement chewed us up pretty well last year. Their defense isn’t nearly what it once was. AZ is still being led by  Captain Crunchy Carson Palmer. A guy who never met a playoff game he excelled in. And then there’s the recently re-minted LA Rams. Meh. I’ll believe them when I see them actually do something They’ve been the team on the rise for 8 seasons now with nothing to show for it. At least we rose to higher heights and then crashed spectacularly into a heap of smoking wreckage. They’ve just been fair to poor for nigh a decade. As Neil Young once said, it’s better to burn out than it is to rust.

I was optimistic during the Alex years. Mainly because it seemed like we were drafting well. I called a playoff run once Harbaugh got here. Yeah, I called 9-7 and one WC playoff win. 13-3 and one playoff win (but it WAS the NFCCG) is what happened, but not too many people saw a turnaround that dramatic. The point being was there was a LOT of talent on those teams of the early millennium. Say 2008-2013.

Now is a GIANT question mark. This last draft at least addressed some of the glaring issues with the team. I thought we wasted a lot of late picks, but that’s neither here nor there. The point now is, what about now? Well, a large amount of the success of the team now rests with DeForest Buckner. If he can be an immediate disruptor, it’ll help the rest of the defense. If he doesn’t generate a sustained pass rush, or provide for others to do the same, we will likely have big problems on the back end of our defense.

The offense? Well, I talked about it in the thread. Then there’s the strength of schedule. This is a misnomer too as this is based on last year. Teams can hit suck mode pretty fast in the NFL. I think AZ and Seattle especially are in for downer years. Carolina? I’m real curious to see how they bounce back. As I am with Denver. They are way too reliant on their defense to be able to pull off another SB victory. Sanchez as Super Bowl winning QB? Hardly. I think Kappy could have gotten them there, but they took the long view. In their case it may prove to be fatal as their defensive dominance wanes.

  2. Winder says:

Well, I guess the hope is that other teams will suck as bad as us. Like the old saying “if you can’t come up to their level, bring em down to yours.” Or something like that.
Anyway chuck you had to know this was coming. One of my all time favorites

  3. Nipper says:

The Niners have miles to go before they sleep.

  4. unca_chuck says:

Haven’t heard that in ages, Winder. I’m going for the more obvious ref.

(Saw this show and it was awesome)

  5. unca_chuck says:

Well, Devey’s gone. Yay! Next is Pears I’d imagine. Or, I pray . . .

The guy we traded to get him, Asante Cleveland, lasted all of 5 games on the Pats and recorded 1 catch for 1 yard. SD signed him when cut by the Pats. I wish we hadn’t traded Carrier.

  6. rtfirefly says:

SI’s Chris Burke has regarded the 2013 draft. At the time he gave the Niners an ‘A’.

Now that’s he’s seen the actual players for three years, he’s changed it to an ‘F’.

    Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa gnash gnash

  7. rtfirefly says:

*regraded – tough to type without an ‘e’ key lol

  8. Lurker John says:

Hawks lost Beast Mode and there’s rumblings around here that Thomas Rawls might never make it all the way back from his broken lower leg injury. It’s similar to the ones Kilgore and Ian Williams suffered and we all saw how long it took those 2 to get back. It’s a serious injury one that’s easily complicated by blood flow and nerve issues.

At the least, Rawls making it back for the 2016 season may be a long shot.

  9. Lurker John says:

The Lambs mortgaged the farm for a QB some are calling a 2nd round talent. They gave up a ton to get him. I like Goff but have to wonder if he’s worth everything LA gave up to get him. Time will tell.

  10. rob says:

Good to see we have enough Online to let Devey go. I was surprised it didn’t happen earlier.

    Here’s a bombshell
Players are left speechless by the new offense and blame plays coming in too late from upstairs and too much verbiage for the delay of game penalties !

    • Winder says:

rob- Lets just hope it works and that we can fool em long enough to get it right. I really don’t see it working unless we get a QB that can handle it. Both Foles and Badford couldn’t.

  11. Lurker John says:

What do you guy think of Devon Cajuste? I loved his ability at Stanford. Big, great hands. He probably types as a tight end in the NFL, but as one he could be a good downfield threat and a mismatch problem for LB’s and even safeties. I don’t know how he blocks, but VD sucked at it when he came into the league and became good at it.

I think he has a good chance for a UDF to make it. I’ll be pulling for him.

    • rob says:

Barrows says the kid looks good

      • rob says:

I wonder if we’ll take a look at Antonio cromartie ? He’s available.
Also they say Jason Peters might be a cap cut ! Wow that would be perfect !

  12. rob says:

The point about the delay penalties is they were being blamed on Kaepernick !
    Nope

  13. unca_chuck says:

Funny how some people spend months and months blaming the delays on the QB and how terrible it is, and when it turns out not to be true, they then say how unimportant they are.

Shit, it only cost us the Super Bowl.

  14. Winder says:

I really like the Stanford kid if he can stand up to the beating he has a chance to be special.
rob- I thinks there is only a few that blame Kappy for everything. I think it was a combination of both in getting the play in time and then executing. No one will ever know, but we have had that problem for years now.

  15. unca_chuck says:

Love Cajuste’s size. He’s a good blocker as well. As long as we can build a line and a quick passing offense, I think the team can at least be decent. I feel like we are a blank canvas. This team has been offensively challenged for quite a while.

  16. unca_chuck says:

    I mean I hate to be optimistic. . . . but . . .

  17. rtfirefly says:

The one wildcard in all this is The Chipster. I watched a lot of Iggle football last year in the preseason and early season. Just some random thoughts:
Kelly could’ve had Foles return, but traded him for Badford. Foles had had a surprising amount of success as starter. He was mobile as a lump of clay, however, and couldn’t stay healthy. So Kelly traded for Mr. Feet Of Concrete himself, who had had no career success????
He could’ve had Tebow as backup instead of Sanchez. Say what you will about Tebow, but Sanchez had already shown what he could and couldn’t (mostly couldn’t) do in extended time filling in for Foles the prior season. The Eagles went down the toilet with Sanchez. He’s a fine QB as a temporary fill-in, but not the full spotlight – and Kelly traded for Mr. Injury and left Sanchez as backup????
    (more coming)

  18. rtfirefly says:

Kelly got rid of first DeSean Jackson and then LeSean McCoy. OK, DSJ is a headcase who’s been something of a choker in the clutch. He’s still a phenomenal offensive threat and he was coming off a 1300+ yd/9 TD season in 2013. LSM accounted for 3700 (!!) yds. offense in 2013/2014.

There’s personality conflicts and there’s stupid.

  19. rtfirefly says:

Still, Kelly picked up the league leading rusher, DeMarco Murray, from Dallas as a FA for 2015. Kelly had Murray, Darren Sproles, and Ryan Matthews at RB last year. That’s what I call a true embarrassment of riches. But Kelly decides he likes Matthews between the tackles, and has Murray running sweeps, catching passes out in the flat, and rushing at the goalline. Needless to say, Murray was NOT happy, How he wound up with 1000 combined yard is beyond me. I never saw any of them.

All of these are just head scratchers to me. Is Kelly such an advanced football mind that he just sees thing others don’t? Or is he a delusional control freak that he sees things that aren’t there?

I’ll finish with this: the Eagles looked FANTASTIC last preseason. The hurry-up offense with Bradford was unstoppable. They looked so good I immediately forgot the advice I’d just posted here about the meaninglessness of preseason.

Then the season started. The offense ground to a halt with a sickening thud. They sucked.

So what to make of Kelly, particularly his offense? I don’t know, I just don’t know.

  20. unca_chuck says:

I didn’t understand the Foles/Bradford trade at all. I thought the only reason for that was for Chip to get Mariota. After that, they all started looking curious.

  21. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, you’d think that if someone can get some mileage out of Kaepernick, it would be Chip.

  22. rtfirefly says:

    Dear Steph,

Get well quick. All is forgiven. The check is in the mail. Don’t worry, the dog recovered.

    Signed,
Every Warrior fan who watched Game 3 in Portland

  23. unca_chuck says:

Well, I don’t think the bench can play any worse. Actually most of the starters sucked as well. Anyone not named Klay or Draymond sucked. Even without Steph one more game, I think we’ll be OK.

  24. Nipper says:

I expected the Warriors to lose that game. Blazers play well at home, it’s the playoffs so it’s to be expected.

  25. Nipper says:

Cueto so far he’s a great addition for the Giants. He’s unique too not like anyone else in playing style.

    • Winder says:

If he holds up he’s a great addition, even though we’ve had some small losing streaks I think we will be there in the end. There are flaws with every team in our division.

  26. unca_chuck says:

Cain MAY get better. I think Peavy is toast. They need to sign Timmy. He can’t do any worse than the toxic twins. Between Cain and Peavy, they’ve won one more game than I could have.

  27. Lurker John says:

One thing the W’s have done perfectly all year is follow up a clunker with a focused, energetic and well-played game. I expect a win tonight, Steph or no Steph.

  28. Lurker John says:

This is a serious period of dead calm in the NFL year and it sucks. You get the big hoopla of the draft then nothing for 2 full months. Yuck.

  29. rob says:

Just thank god Kelley doesn’t have personnel power ! I’d need a gun

  30. unca_chuck says:

Well, I think he had something to do with this draft. How much is anybody’s guess, but we needed O line help, ad at least we got some.

  31. Winder says:

It is definitely wait and see time. But this is the time for high hope and I still have a few. But not many.

  32. unca_chuck says:

Learn something every day. Didn’t know Johnny Rivers was the first house band to play the Whiskey A-Go Go in LA.

  33. Winder says:

I used to love Johnny Rivers when i was a kid.

  34. Winder says:

    A little history

  35. Winder says:

    OK, I’m done

  36. unca_chuck says:

Zeppelin were the masters at stealing shit from the likes of Leadbelly and Robert Johnson.

  37. unca_chuck says:

    Got another trifecta tonight.

Sharks at 6:00, Giants at 7:15, and the Warriors at 7:30. Be still my remote . . .

  38. unca_chuck says:

I hate when the refs play this so chickenshit,

  39. Lurker John says:

Warriors shitting another turd tonight. The Blazers are in their heads now and the Warriors can’t stop anyone on that team. The Portland players have been strolling into the lane all night. Harrison Barnes, another no-show effort.

The entire dynamic of the series has shifted.

  40. Lurker John says:

I’ve counted at least 5 missed layups in the first half.

  41. Lurker John says:

The Sharks are going to OT. They need to finish off the pesky Preds tonight.

  42. Lurker John says:

The fucking officials are killing Golden State in this series. Livingston gets clubbed in the head, no foul called, then gets his dumb ass thrown out.

  43. unca_chuck says:

The only hope the Sharks have is they are at home. They should have finished these guys off, but they have a history of falling short.

  44. rtfirefly says:

The Sharks can’t let it get to OT. They should take out the goalie late in tie games. They only lost once in regular season regulation. Once. In OT they suck.

  45. rtfirefly says:

The Warriors are a whole nuther team with Steph. Win or lose, big guy, welcome back.

  46. unca_chuck says:

2/3 of the way to the trifuckta.

  47. unca_chuck says:

Criminy. Hell of a Warrior game. Thompson’s d almost won it in regulation.

  48. rtfirefly says:

All 12 Warrior points in the OT so far, including that 35 footer he just hit that barely made the net move. Heeeeeeeeeeeeee’s baaaaaaa-ackkkkk.

  49. rtfirefly says:

17 in OT for Steph. Seven down, nine to go…

  50. unca_chuck says:

    Steph for President!!

  51. Nipper says:

    In contrast the Giants offense……..zzzzzzzzzzzz
