Who’s Next?

Well, since the speculation is that we are switching QBs after Kappy is paid and traded, what do we do about our QB situation? I’ve made it pretty clear that we should keep Kappy, keep fucking Gabbert, and sign the best guy available with the 7th pick. This team cannot flounder around and treat the quarterback position like it’s the back up TE spot. They need a solid plan to find out if Kappy is salvageable, and draft his successor regardless. Gabbert is nothing more than a backup in either case. All this talk about Gabbert getting it better is unadulterated horse shit. He can study til the cows come home, but he’ll still be Blaine Gabbert, the guy who gets you 5 yards on 3rd and 8.

The QBs that are in play are:

Upshot NDAKST QB Carson Wentz. A guy who went from mid-2nd rounder to likely the 1st QB drafted because of the hype machine. He’s a 2 year starter who played on a run-based offense in the 2nd-tier of college football. Not sure how he rose so fast, but hey, them’s the breaks.

Jared Goff, Cal’s wonderboy who would have won a lot more games had Cal played even a little bit of defense. The dude broke just about all Aaron Rodgers’ collegiate records, and Cal, as we all know, plays a pro-style offense against bigger and badder competition than NDAKST.

Paxton Lynch. The Memphis QB was the consensus first QB pick about 3 months ago. However, with his poor showing in his bowl game and iffy combine, he’s dropping faster than Bill Clinton’s pants at a Miss America contest. He showed a lot of accuracy on the move however, and could fit nicely with Chipper’s speed game.

Connor Cook. Here’s a guy who is being openly courted by Trent Baalke. Maybe as a smokescreen, or just a straight out truth. He’s big, strong, has all the physical tools, but his shortcomings lie between his ears. He would be another work in progress, much like Carson Wentz would be.

The rest would be outliers and risks that would not likely pan out. Hackenberg is a dinker and dunker who doesn’t complete a lot of passes. 3rd round flier? No thanks. Dak Prescott? He seems to have the brain for the game at the NFL level, but he’s a runner who needs to adapt to the NFL passing game and not lock on to guys.

Anyone after this would be pretty much mailing it in. Coker? Hogan? Cardale Jones? Meh. This isn’t a strong QB class, but the top 3 could be impact guys. Cook is too risky in my book. After that is nothing.

Given the shot, they should take Jared Goff. He comes in with the most polished game. The rest are varying shades of potential and drama. Should they not get the chance, one of the other two (Lynch or Wentz) should be there.

It’s gonna be a long fucking wait until the draft. Since it’s another Baalke draft we really shouldn’t get our hopes up to much, like you said earlier #1 will probably be a DB.

  2. NJ49er says:

Brandon Doughty WKU is my dark horse Chuck.
I don’t think Pick 7 has value at the QB position.
This is a Baalke Draft Class.
    Loaded on Defense.

  3. Nipper says:

I don’t know much about the draft but I’m sure Baalke is smart enough not to draft Jared Goff in this draft. He would have to be overruled by the owner on this pick. These QB’s are fool’s gold. They look so good until you draft them and then……ouch!

  4. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, that Arron Rodgers was a bust, eh? As much as the team is thin on defense, we are dogshit on offense, We need MUCH more help on that side of things. We need a new crop of WRs. We need a consistent line. Hopefully Carlos Hyde stays healthy.

As far as the defense goes, my hope is the new coaching staff has a better plan than the haphazard approach of last year. They played very well at times, and they played flat terrible at times. Often a week apart.

Beyond that, this team cannot continue with Gabbert and some 3rd round QB as their plan going forward.

It is imperative to get a QB in my mind.

Baalke would have to be overruled by his new coach and the owner to get a high pick QB. His history does not indicate such a pick. Perhaps this draft will be different for him.

As I said at the time it happened, the Niners were morons to win that last game and drop from 4th to 7th. Could be the diff from getting a franchise QB, and another Baalke dud lineman pick. Jerruh says he won’t, but don’t be surprised if Goff heads to Dallas. If so, I will let fly with a few bad words…

  6. unca_chuck says:

The only thing that gives me a little pause with Jerry jerk off is he just dumped more money at Romo’s feet. It may not mean he won’t draft Goff, but it sure means he expects Romo to play for at least another 3-4 years. Their defense is in a shambles so I think they go D.

The more likely scenario is Tennessee trading down to someone (Rams) in desperate need of a QB.

  7. Nipper says:

The trouble with a team that is desperate, they make mistakes and the Rams over the years have made their share.

  8. unca_chuck says:

They had a ton of picks they squandered. Much like Baalke.

  9. Nipper says:

Speaking as a fan of course, if “we” get a franchise QB from this draft it will be “an act of God!”

  10. Nipper says:

    ……Just kidding…….

  11. unca_chuck says:

The Rams were never desperate. they were just stupid. They got a shit-ton of picks from Washington to draft RGIII, and they squandered most of them.

Just like us. Baalke has done a great job of accumulating picks, but he hasn’t exactly stocked the team with talent.

He needs to nail this one. Otherwise we have a team full of scrubs. And he is gone.

    • Nipper says:

Why waste time? Lets demand a firing immediately. Baalke is probably a good scout but as GM he’s attained a position that shows his limitations. The talent level keeps declining and a GM has to be accountable for that.

  12. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, Nip. Been wanting Baalke out for a while now.

    Oh well. Not my call.

Manning’s done. Might as well go out on top of the game. Wonder if Denver comes sniffing around after 4/4?

  13. Nipper says:

Damn…….Home Town Buffet has just declared bankruptcy. Sniff….boo…hoo!

  14. unca_chuck says:

They need to sign O linemen by the dozen. Find a group that works.

    • rob says:

Omg they need to re-sign Boone. Pay the man for chrissakes. 6 mil ?
I like LT Staley LG Boone C Kilgore

  15. rob says:

Now add maybe RG Sweezey and Ronnie Stanley

  16. unca_chuck says:

If we draft Stanley, we’d better have a QB to protect. Dak and the Scrubbinies don’t thrill me at all.
