Here We Go Again

Well, the Jimmy Bag-a-donuts era was short-lived and disastrous. Next up? Chip Kelly and his brand of high-speed no-huddle offense. Yes, we finally get the pedal-to-the-metal offensive-minded coach we haven’t has since the Mariucci days, and yes, Chip draws comparisons to guys like Mad Mike Martz (he of the JT O’Fuckmeagain and Shaun [over the] Hill gang) and even the old Mouse Davis run ‘n’ gun college/pro offense of the 80s. But this is a different league now, and everybody is fast. Not sure how this plays, but Chip did reel off two 1-6 seasons before sabotaging himself amid a bunch of questionable moves to build the Eagles in his distorted image.

Which brings us to this season. As of now, the team is a mystery as the Niners are in a very friendly cap situation, but have shed talent like a lizard sheds its skin. According to Spotrac, the adjusted salary cap is $154 mill. The Niners current salaries are at $105 mill. So as of now we have close to $50 mill in cap space.  And that is without the minor hit but major cap savings of close to $10 mill the Niners would get should they jettison Colin Kaepernick before the 4/1/16 salary kick-in deadline.

Heady stuff. But then again, we have Trent Baalke, the architect of the steady talent drain for the past 4 years, at the helm of the Titani, uh Good Ship Forty Niners. Chip has promised not to stick his nose into the personnel side of things, but what of it? Do we have Baalke drafting in a void? Surely he knows that Chip is moving the team is a much different direction than Harbaugh was. Which is why it was so baffling to me to see Baalke drafting little WRs when his trend was for bigger possession types. Even LMJ and Hunter were off the usual pattern of Baalke. Harbaugh’s power run game certainly didn’t fit with these draft picks. Were they outfoxing each other?  Was Baalke drafting random guys? I don’t get it.

Will it get better with Chip and Balke? We will see. The decision to keep or lose Colin and or Gabbert will have been made when the draft rolls around, so we should have a little better idea of where Trent will draft. As if that ever made a difference.

About the draft: ……”Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

    • Nipper says:

I know I should be but there have been so many duds over the years how can one get excited by these college players anymore?

  2. Nipper says:

Will V ever escape the clutches of his handlers in white coats? Will he get access to a computer to post his hopeless drivel again? Stay tuned for the next installment of “help my head has turned to mush or “where’s my keeper taking me?”

  3. unca_chuck says:

Sounds like the Rocky and Bullwinkle show, Nip.

  4. Lurker John says:

I don’t know, I get hyped for the draft every year. Maybe it’s the promise of another Joe Montana or Jerry Rice coming down the pike, but that hope that the next savior will get drafted is ever present for me.

Did I hear correctly, that Geep Chryst’s kid is a highly-touted freshman QB for the Cardinal?

  5. Lurker John says:

Alright, Nipper, what did V now?

  6. Nipper says:

V wakes up and tries to send another insult from a computer to his dear friend, Chuck. First he has to relieve himself and find the bathroom. He wanders the hallways calling out “Joe” but no one answers. What’s a guy to do?

  7. Winder says:

Another one bites the dust. RIP Paul Kantner. This one really hits home.

  8. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, saw a couple incarnations of this band. Stairway to Cleveland, indeed.

    RIP Paul.

  9. Winder says:

I think the last time I saw the Starship was in “76” but I have some great memories from some of their concerts. Good times.

  10. Nipper says:

V wakes up and his voice has gotten higher……he’s talking like Rocky the flying squirrel! He wants to assume a new ID and Rocky comes to mind. His handlers are worried! Has V finally taken the final swan dive into mental instability? Stay tuned until “Help my mind is flying away” or “Fuck you Chuck, again.”

Speaking of starship my brother Ed got to play bass with them when Dianna mangano was lead singer

      • Winder says:

Very Nice! Excepting their Pop era (we built this city) a song that I totally hate.Their music always brings a smile to my face.

  11. NJ49er says:

    Hey Berger –
I’ve got a ‘Big Target’ guy for you, ala KBenjamin/DFunchess from Carolina.
    Cincinnati WR Mekale McKay –
    6’5″/210 4.45
Kid averaged almost 19yds/Rec while barley missing a game a game in 4 years (50 GP)
Could find this kid in the late RDs on the cheap by the looks of it.
Keep an eye open for him, if he gets to the Combines.

Can’t believe a kid that size is listed with a 4.45/40?

    • NJ49er says:

Got a sleeper ILB for you too –
      William & Mary – Luke Rhodes 6’2″/242

      47 GP 347 TKLs
      Pretty impressive numbers
Waiting for the Combine Invitation List which should be out this week.

Tell ya one thing, we need to draft some size at WR. These little guys ain’t cutting it.

Wonder if any of those UDFA WRs, or even Smelter make the grade.

  13. Winder says:

We got a lotta picks but QB and both lines need to be addressed first. And, since we are gonna run a high-risk offense we need some real good cover guys(not S’s) but CB’s. It’s gonna be interesting to see how we pull all this off. We will need to be big players in the FA. We have so many holes this year is probably gonna be a learning year which is ok as long as we see progress for the future.

    • Nipper says:

Oh please forget drafting a QB. Most of us will be dead and buried by the time a new ass QB is playing well. They just don’t cut it. College ball does not prepare players that need a lot of skill and knowledge to do well in the pros. Period.

Despite the Niners being in the middle of some kind of organizational washing machine cycle, it’s still better than being a Raiduhs fan. At least the Niners are staying put. Bowl Cut Davis is running around trying to move his franchise anywhere BUT to a new place in Oakland. I think he’s finally figured out nothing will ever get done in Oakland for new digs for football. Glad I dropped my fan card for the Raiduhs decades ago…

    • Nipper says:

Raiduhs should set up shop in Tijuana. It would help their image as bad boys. First team in Mexico. Ole!

Good story on Eddie D, as the media votes this Saturday on whether he belongs in the football HOF. Of course he does. A complicated guy, not all his stories are as good as the ones written in the above link, some we’ve heard before, certainly. But, how can Eddie D NOT be in the football HOF, when they allow owners in? It’s a crock. So, put Roger Craig in, too, while they’re at it…

  16. Winder says:

What I don’t like is that it’s all up to a group of sports writers if Eddie gets in or not.

    • Nipper says:

Notice how a lot of these sports guys are appearing on TV. I guess the papers are about to can them or have already. Fat Ray Ratto on TV is an abomination we don’t need.

  17. Nipper says:

Anyone admit to watching the Pro Bowl? It’s being roasted and panned on Sports Talk.

  18. unca_chuck says:

Nope. Too busy in Super Bowl City. Well, that and the Warriors game.

  19. unca_chuck says:

If Eddie doesn’t get in, then what good is it?

    • Winder says:

If Eddie doesn’t get in it will be because a bunch of “Holier Than Thou” fuckheads think they are Goddamn saints and vote him out. When half of em probably take it up the shorts. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

  20. Nipper says:

The radio ass-holes from out of town are complaining everything is too spread out for them. “It’s a whole 55 miles to San Jose from San Francisco!”

  21. Nipper says:

The Broncos Bus crash on 101 and 237 is near where I live. Manning declared that “memorable”. What a hoot!
