And So It Begins . . .

Vernon Davis is Casualty # 1 in the bloodletting. The 49ers traded him to Denver for a 6th and 7th next year, and a 6th in 2017. Normally this would be good news, but when you look at trent Baalke’s track record, well, al these picks he’s had haven’t netted enough to keep the team competitive. Especially on the offensive side of things. VD takes his stone hands and amazing speed off to Denver, where I’m sure he’ll provide Payton Manning with enough 12-15 yard passes to keep him happy.

Speaking of Trent, my biggest recent problem is, of course, running back. the Niners had, at one point, Carlos Hyde, LMJ, Kendall Hunter, Reggie Bush, Jarryd Hayne, Mike Davis, and a couple low-level draft picks. Well, Hunter signed an injury release, LMJ was cut, Hayne was recently cut, and we went from a plethora of guys to a minimal number. Hyde was getting dinged up before they let Hayne go. Hunter could have been PUPped, but they chose to chuck him to the scrap heap rather than wait the 6 weeks for his recovery.

The problem? Well, your #1 backup RB is Reggie Bush. A 30 year old guy who isn’t exactly Ironman. He’s more like Crystal Todd (for you oldsters out there). To exacerbate the problem, you just cut your nominal punt returner in Jarryd Hayne. So, your backup RB is now your primary PR. Your primary PR, who was your 3rd strong RB, is now gone. Bush of course already hit the IR with a calf strain after his 2nd rush of the season. So, Mr Durable is now your starting RB as well as your PR. What could go wrong?

Exactly. Nice work Trent.  or all the talk of Jed fucking the team over, one needs to scrutinize the job Trent Baalke has(n’t) done in recent drafts.  I said the bullseye would be squarely on Trent’s forehead if the team cratered, but he seems to be doing a masterful job of deflecting everything wrong with the team to Harbaugh’s guy Colin Kaepernick.

Problem there is Jed believes him. Might as well start Gabby Gabbertson and let the hilarity reach an all-time high. As in Jimmy-Hat fun times. Troy Davis, anyone?

. . . sigh . . .

Frankly, this year will be interesting only in the fact that they don’t look to do much winning. I’d better start watching more Cal games. this team needs to draft a QB and 5 offensive linemen.

And in more exciting news, the 49ers signed Shaun Draughn (yes, THAT Shaun Draughn) to be our new RB.

Not real happy with the trade. When you’re in our position I’d like to keep what good players we do have left. I’d have been happier with a 4th instead if two sixes

  3. rob's avatar rob says:

Omg we used the sixth overall pick on Davis and all we have to show for it is a sixth rounder

He is 35 and declining Rob, what did you think they would get?
Niners get a 6th but give a 7th to the Broncos this year and a 6th next year. Not much huh.

I posted this on the intermediate “non” thread.

Chuck, Manning was very, very good. He hit his first long ball of the year amongst other achievements. Aaron Rodgers threw for 77 yards. Yes, the Denver D is that good. Their front 4 with or without blitizes was chasing him up and down, all around the whole game. When Rodgers did buy time with his feet, his receivers were blanketed.

  5. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

We actually swapped a 6th rounder for a 7th rounder, and Denver tossed in a 6th rounder next year.

The net effect is we moved our 7th rounder this year up about 10-15 spots (very high 7th to very low 6th) and we have an extra 6th next year. Might as well have just handed VD to Denver gratis.

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

All I can say is at least we got something.

He was gone at he end of the year anyway.

    Happy trails.

    • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Now we need to trade Boone to move that new 6th up about 10-15 spots and pick up another 2017 6th rounder in the process. Boone’s a goner too.

On the good side Hayne cleared waivers
On the bad Hyde might need surgery. Omfg

This place is better than a soap opera for sports. Everything is going to hell in a hand basket.

Like Jerry said, might as well enjoy the ride.

    Hayne to the PS

    • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

My Niners are a joke. We have Draughn who nobody wants. We have Gaskins (undrafted out of U. of Richmond) who made 1/3 the yds./carry that Hayne did in similar work. We have no punt returner.
The Jed and Trent Show – rotten shame the Niners can’t move to L.A. and the Raiders move into a new stadium on the site of Candlestick – swap names, the whole Browns/Ravens thing proves franchise shifts can happen.

The running stats the Niners put yesterday are mind-boggling. That’s just as bad as it gets.

  11. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

It’s hard to say that with a straight face, “Rodgers threw for 77 yards.”

  12. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, there’s no joy in Indy this year as well. Wonder why Luck forgot how to QB this year.

  13. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

The Colin Kaepernick era is officially over: Gabbert to start Sunday.

As much as Gabbert sucks I guarantee you the O will perform better Sunday with him under center. That’s how bad #7stormscoming has played this season. Kap couldn’t even produce a drop of rain in a goddamn El Nino year.

  14. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Del would you like to share where you read that drivel? Or are you just spreading rumors?

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I think this is a bad move, but really all they have to lose are games. And their QB.

    It certainly won’t get better.

Gabby is 5-22 as a starter. He’s the savior.

  16. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Wonder if the Panthers are going to turtle up and run 3 times. All they need to do is get a couple first downs.

  17. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

I think I want the deck chairs….hmmm…..brown! Until I change my mind and want them blue again. (Don’t pay any attention to those nasty, vicious iceberg rumors.)

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Crazy game. Panthers did their defense no favors with that last 3 and out.

  19. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Luck nearly throws a pick on the last play.

  20. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Ted Ginn with a familiar site . . . dropping the game-winning TD.

  21. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Luck with another pick and Indy loses . . . 3-5 and in 1st place.

  22. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Well, let’s hear it for the Warriors. Another playoff opponent from last year, and they are up by FORTY with 7 miniutes left in the 4th,

  23. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

They had to try Gabbert. Surprised though that they did not wait until after the bye. Must be some locker room crap driving the change sooner. I don’t know how Gabbert will do, and it really doesn’t matter much, this team is going down the dumper. But, a bit more respectable trip down the dumper might be nice. Push for the #1 pick, but this time, don’t pick another Alex Smith. VD gone and won’t be missed — 6th or 7th round pick in return — whatever…

  24. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Blake Bell can now get a better look. He looks like a talented TE. And yes, it was time to sit Kap. It doesn’t mean he’s done in SF, but what the team is doing with him now just isn’t working.

  25. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Championship hangover? What championship hangover? Hold the Griz to 69 pts, win by 50. Holy smokes.

  26. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

The niners would usually have kept which QB would play on Sunday secret until an hour before kickoff. Instead they announced the benching the day before the trade deadline….

Kap is a talented guy with some shortcomings playing behind this line:

    2015 PFF Run Blocking Grades:
    Boone: -8.9 (79th of 80 Guards)
    Martin: -22.0 (35 of 35 C)
    Devey: -7.3 (78 of 80 G)
    Pears: -13.7 (78 of 78 T)

As has been said, fix the line and most of the QB problems go away but they didn’t/couldn’t so Kap, who is far from blameless too, carries the can.

Gabbert may or may not do better but they need to evaluate him since Kap is likely done with the Niners.

  27. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Ken Whisenhunt fired by the Titans. He was a good OC for the Chargers in 2013. Chryst should be looking over his shoulder during the bye.
