THE SKY IS FALLING!!! THE SKY IS . . . Nevermind

Panic is for the pussies. The 49ers were folded, spindled, and mutilated yesterday by Ben Rothlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers. A game that saw the Niners make TWO 17 play drives that netted 3 points, and failed on two forth and goal situations, and you get the idea. Time and again, the defense generated zero pressure on big ben and he torched us repeatedly. Yeah, the uncoverable Antonio Brown was well, uncoverable (9-195???), but when you make DHB look good, you have problems in the secondary.

Much will be made of this game, but I attribute some of this shittiness to the schedule. Having 4 days off and a travel day is no way to recover from a game. Pittsburgh was coming off a tough road loss, was having their home opener, and were on 10 days rest. The Niners were coming off a Monday night win, and had to travel cross-country on a short week. Tomsula didn’t use the excuse of blaming the short week, noting that they knew about the schedule way in advance, but that still doesn’t mean that they can survive the quick turn-around without some ramifications.

Bad as it was offensively, there were some bright spots. The offense looked good til the red-zone issues raised their ugly head. Kappy and T Smith connected on a nice deep post pattern that Kappy got over the LB and hit Smith in stride. Smith had 6 catches for 120 yards. 10 different 49ers caught passes so Kappy was spreading the ball around. But the issues were many. Hyde fumbled an exchange early that Pittsburgh capitalized on. VD and Boldin had drops. Miller dropped a TD pass in the end zone. Kappy was under a ton of pressure all day (5 sacks-37 yards to 0-0 for us). The run blocking was non-existent.

The defense? Well, the numbers tell all. Worthlessberger was 21-27 for 369 yards. A whopping 13 yards per completion. The D held DeAngelo Williams in check, but that was because the Steelers were connecting on everything in the air.

Bad game? Sure. Reason to panic and act like the season is over? Hardly. Non-division game on the road against a top-tier team is no reason to get too down on this one. St. Louis might be a little worried though. Getting spanked by the woeful Redskins is a bit embarrassing. Especially after coming off their emotional win over the (now 0-2) Seahawks.

The AZ game looms large.

Chuck, I just hope this gives the OC the confidence in letting Colin air it out more frequently. Oh and even the announcers wanted to know why Millers TD was over turned. They need to review that rule. Has anyone heard how bad the injury to Hyde was/is? He certainly didn’t look full strength after that hit.

  2. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Perfect name……Worthlessberger……he’s lucky he has that skill.

  3. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Say what you want about Worthlessberger, the dude can play some quarterback.

  4. 12th man's avatar 12th man says:

It’s a simple game when you boil it down. It’s won/lost in the trenches and the Niners lost both sides of the ball, badly.
I was frankly shocked they thought they would run on Pit after last week. No DC in the league would watch what the Niners did to the Vikes and not sell out to stop the run. Tactical error of the first order.
All 3 phases played flat. That short week/travel took a heavy toll.
    Kap played well.
No pass rush killed the back 4.
Letting a WR get behind the safety 4 times is unforgivable.

    Really liked Lurker John’s commentary.
    Irish Kevin ditto.

I’m in Arizona for next week’s game, I hope to see a rested and focused team put Palmer on his ass all day.

  5. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Sir Spit is crowing like a magpie on steroids. He knows all and he knows the Niners suck. That’s his message in nutshell. Skeebers nuthouse always puts out their lunacy without failure.

  6. rob's avatar rob says:

    Some good points CHUCK
    Worthlessberger is what he is.
Like I said before the game we had a short week and they had extra time.
They were making a statement in their home opener after the meltdown vs. NE.
    East coast game for us
All this meant a tough road for us .

    • rob's avatar rob says:

Not real sure we can beat AZ this weekend .
Imo a 2-2 start isn’t unrealistic at this point.
I do think we’ll get better as the year goes on

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah we did lean on the run early, but it was working to some extent. They get 7 on that long drive and don’t cough up the ball, they Are in better shape. For this work-in-progress offense they’ve done pretty well.

I think the d was tired before they hit the field.

  8. Winder's avatar Winder says:

One things for sure the youngsters are gonna see what it’s like to face a team that really hates them. It’s going to take some time for everyone to get in sync.

  9. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

Frank knees the ball out of his own hands while he has a clear path to the EZ. Down 10-0 in the 3rd after a 10 min drive, it’s a big deal.
It’s a weird season so far. Indy went scoreless two consecutive first halves for the first time since Harbs was QB in 1997. They’re in big trouble against the Jets which will put them at 0-2.
    Changing of the Guard Year?

  10. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

*two consecutive scoreless first halves LOL

Seattle at 0-2, Philly at 0-2, Balt at 0-2, NO at 0-2, Indy at 0-2 (?), some unusual teams have started slow.

  11. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Lots of people talk about Kappy but how would this team look if we had Sam Badford. The rams were smart to unload him.

    • rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

I’m LMAO. They could’ve had Foles with Tebow backing him up. Instead they’ve got Bradford and Sanchez. Hahaha. They have a pathetic O-line, and Bradford is already playing like a deer in the headlights. Tebow lives for that stuff.

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

      “Badford.” LOL

  12. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

So much for Gore helping the Colts.

  13. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Frank The Tank looked old in tonight’s game.

  14. rtfirefly's avatar rtfirefly says:

I’m quite happy that Eli and Luck are 0-2. Maybe that will dissuade others from making those hideous TV commercials.

  15. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Losing to the Jets in your own house looks a lot worse than getting handled, after a short week and x-country trip, by the Steelers in theirs…

  16. Berger's avatar Berger says:

Funny how Andrew Luck, or any QB, doesn’t look so good under siege. Is his O-line bad or is the scheme bad? I don’t know, I don’t watch the Colts and did not watch for that last night. It’s probably both. You can’t listen to the media or the fans for that kind of info, they usually only know stats.

The Jets do have a great D-line and Todd Bowles. Last year I felt that the only thing saving the Colts was Luck because the play calling sucked. They probably need a better O-line but more than that I think they need a new coach.

  17. Berger's avatar Berger says:

It has come to my attention via the Dan Lebatard(sp) show that last night’s game broke an NFL record for the two starting QBs that most look like Civil War generals! LOL!

  18. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Sir Spit is back ranting about Trent Baalke and Jed York. He’s one step ahead of the white coats at the Skeebers Asylum for wayward males.

  19. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Got that right, Bergs. Which is why I think Kappy had a very good game last weekend despite the pressure. The red zone problems were there, but I have more faith that these guys can fix things rather than the last batch of coaches.

  20. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Strange year so far, that’s for sure. Chip K-K-Kelly trades away his semi-mobile QB for a not-so mobile brittle guy for no particular reason, and reaps the damages. His ex Foles and the Rams beat Seattle and lose to the Redskins. Dallas loses their QB and #1 WR and goes 2-0. Seattle stumbles out of the gate at 0-2. Indy, the Ravens, Colts Saints, and Bears, all playoff teams, or heavy favorites to be, all stagger out of the gate at 0-2.

Denver on the other hand is the shittiest 2-0 team out there. Manning looks shakey at best, and their on;y reason for being 2-0 is that Andy Reid had a brain fart of epic proportions and ran a play instead of taking a knee to force overtime. The Jets 2-0? Well, they beat the Browns and the sudden’y hapless and fucked up Colts.

Looks like it’s going to be a wide open year. Wonder if GB can finally get over the hump and reach the Super Bowl.

Thanks for the updates, Nipper. Someone has to read that drivel. Although Skabie’s Anti-49er ‘record’ thing is pretty funny. The only team 2-0 is the one who hasn’t gotten any help from the ex-Niner, so what does it mean? Poor Frank played a direct part in the Colts loss with a fumble on the 1 yard line without being touched. Fangio’s Bear defense? Dead last in points allowed. Michigan? Beating the dregs of college football at this point. They have a real patty-cake schedule. Cully was suspended last game, and of the rest (and why is Alex on the list? Harbaugh is the one who got rid of him) only Crabby had any impact. Tilt away, fuckos.

  21. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Apparently the head of the Big Ten has banned “patty-cake schedules” for next season. Teams will not play Div. II schools and fatten their records.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

all the divisions should do that. It has really gotten to the point where college football is unwatchable. It’s all about the big fat dollar.

  22. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Phil fan is unhappy on Skeebers. Calls the owner an “imbecile” and the GM is “clueless.” Coaches are incompetent. Team reverting to a state of “pants dropping.” Phil concludes there’s just a general level of incompetence. Yes sir, Phil is one unhappy camper. Perhaps his state of mind is down.

Hey, why do you guys always wait until all the blowhards on the other blog make their comments to do your post game segment? On both sides It sounds terrible and you guys seem like you are shouting louder and louder at each other. Better timing on this would be greatly appreciated for us listeners sitting in the bleachers….

Right skippy. Go back to lurking if this is your contribution.

  25. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Hmmm. Funny that last year’s offense is perceived as awesome by the revisionistas when it was drab and one-dimensional for 4 years under Harbaugh. Now there’s a scheme problem? Too motherfucking funny.

This year? through 2 games anyway we are 4th in yards. The defense suffered last week on short rest. That’s it.

This team is a work in progress. They lost a shitload of players and coaches. Some retarded folk out there think they have the same talent at the 2012 team. They don’t. The offense is looking better, and the defense is looking worse. Pretty much what I thought when the season started.

Sure the red zone issues popped up last week. Then again, we played one of the better defenses in the league, and Hyde’s turnover was a killer that put the team it-nto a bigger hole than there would have been. And whining about the punter is fucking hysterical. Or the unis. Yeah, those are the problems. By that standard, the Niners should go with the black since they are 1-0. Hyuk!

    • rob's avatar rob says:

Well last year as you know CHUCK we only went 8-8 because kaepernick sucks otherwise we would have been a Superbowl contender lol

  26. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

What’s even funnier is the Revisinistas are revising the Colts history as well. Bad o line? Bad defense? Too funny. Bad offseason moves hurt the Colts. They didn’t address the line enough, and they signed aging stars (Gore, Andre Johnson) whose contracts are onerous at best. Love Frank, but he’s looking like Franco in Seattle or Emmit in AZ.

When Spitty and NoFear are the voices of reason on your site, then you have a pit of droolers. The truth remains, 99% of these moves happen with Harabugh here. And the offense would be worse. We’d be 0-2 with Harbaugh here. Book it.

  27. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Bullit-Bakkentom are crying “What the hell happened?” They lament all the fine players lost forever. “We lost bodies and experience” they lament. The sobbing goes on without interruption on the “other” blog. They better call in a shrink over there to deal with all the troubled males. Grief is a bitch.

Why are guys so hostile towards your guest? As a Christian man I’m a little offended by some of your comments. My name is Chris Thomas and as a former 49er player I’m appalled how some of you are acting. Back In 1995 I don’t recall any fans acting the way you all do, I guess the times have changed.

I realize in our society Religious fundamentalism is on the decline and one can only read some of these posts to understand why. The situation is extraordinary, but candor about no belief is becoming more and more commonplace. We are all on the same team we all want the 49ers to be the best they can be. Some people believe being a fan even when times are tough makes you a true fan and that’s great if it’s only a game to you. Other fans believe it’s more than just a game and take offense to bad trades, bad hiring’s and bad moves that seems to be ruining the franchise. They have too much heart and pride of their respected team to not say anything about it. Either way we’re all fans in our own way and we should be civil towards one another and respect each others opinions.
